Cathar Castles:
This is Cathar country. For lovers of history and legend, there are many impressive Cathar fortresses nearby, including Puivert and Montsegur where in 1244, 225 martyrs thing to be burnt at the stake, rather than give up their faith.
APARTMENTS (Gites)
Bourdil offers two independent, spacious, high quality self catering apartments (Aragou 100 M2 + Tivoli 40 M2) with modern kitchens and shower rooms. Situated on the first floor with a separate staircase, they may not be suitable for young children or anyone with a physical disability. They can be rented separately or together for larger groups.
Bourdil is unusual, because it is in a beautiful countryside setting yet only 12 minutes walk to Chalabre with it's full range of shops. It's so much nicer to stroll to the bakery in the mornings alongside the river, rather than having to drive for miles!
A Wi-Fi Broadband connection is available at the Bourdil to save you looking out at the Internet cafe elsewhere, although a free connection is offered at the library. Bring your own laptop, PDA or blackberry to get on-line. A good mobile signal can be received at the house. Satellite TV is on hand too UK free stations.
SKIING & SNOWBOARDING: Nearest resorts are:
• Mont d'Olmes, just 25 miles away
• Ax les Thermes, 36 miles away via Puivert.
The Med: The Languedoc-Roussillon coast, beaches of Narbonne-Plage in the north to Canet-Plage and Argelès-Plage in the south, near Perpignan. Collioure is a pretty harborside village.
Walking & Cycling:
Bourdil goes in one direction towards Lake Montbel through the woods (see picture), or in the other direction towards the village to connect with a variety of routes hiking and mountain biking trails (walking and cycling circuits). There are fantastic views from a number of walks in the immediate area.
Lake Montbel: The 540 hectare Lake Montbel, with its sailing and boating facilities, is about 3 miles by road - or less via the wooded path from Le Bourdil.
Carcassonne: Within easy reach by car (45 minutes), is the spectacular city of Carcassonne - originally built in the middle ages.
Mirepoix & Limoux: Also nearby is the fascinating medieval town of Mirepoix, with its unique 13th century 'covered' gold arcades around the main square, and Limoux, the center for the sparkling white wine, Blanquette de Limoux.
