Gordonsville House | 1856 Manor House on 600-Acre Working Horse/Cattle Estate

4 Bedroom House in Gordonsville

Our historic Manor House (circa 1856) was completely renovated and refurnished in 2004. From its hilltop location, you enjoy commanding views of the Southwest Mountain range and of our vast pastures. Children and adults alike are transported far from the world of the city to life on an old Virginia estate, immaculately restored, situated on land once owned by President James Madison, whose Montpelier home is just on the other side of the mountain.
This is a wonderful place to gather several generations of family in a locale where all ages will be contented. Adults savor the peace and quiet, the views, the local historic sites, museums, fine restaurants, wineries, antique shops and art galleries, scenic drives and quaint villages. Children are endlessly fascinated by having 600 acres on which to run wild, explore nature, skim rocks and fish in ponds, play in our swimming hole, watch horses and cows and wildlife, peer down old wells, smell manure, chase lightening bugs and frogs, and have rural adventures of all sorts. If you can get them off the farm, they can trail ride on a neighboring farm, go rafting, see UVA, visit three former Presidents' homes within a 30 mile radius, or go to a bull-riding event, horse show, or other local summer event.
It is no exaggeration to describe Wolf Trap and its environs as idyllic. Spend some time on a Virginia estate, and see why so many celebrities and jet-setters who could choose to live anywhere have chosen this part of rural Virginia for their country retreats.
We have 6 additional vacation rental homes on the farm. The Servants' Cottage is 30 yards behind the Manor House and sleeps up to four (see vrbo #442721). The Pond House is 150 yards away and sleeps up to 7 (see vrbo #90883). There is also a Barn Apartment, the Milker's Cottage, Baldy's Retreat and the Cox Mill House, plus three glamping tents.

Summary: Visited Monticello, wineries, and shops with 9 girlfriends and had a great time. The property has horses, barns, and beautiful sunsets. Sleeping arrangements were good for 8 people. The ninth or more person had to sleep on pull out couch or trundle beds. The 9th spot was not made up for us so we needed to make up the bed. Most pillows need to be replaced. The hot tub was clean, hot and nice. They only had 6 towels out for us, but we made it work. The kitchen was well stocked. The communication was excellent. .

Summary: About a month out from Thanksgiving the family decided to get everyone together, however we live 12 hours apart. We found this place available and was about in the middle so it was perfect. It had plenty of space and great features. The staff and those working with the horses were all friendly and accommodating. The one and only negative thing I could say is the hot tub at the house wasn’t working, which we didn’t know until we got there, and the kids were looking forward to it. That being said, there is a second one available on property, we just didn’t want to go that far with the kids in the cold. Everything else was a 10. The history of the place is neat and the towns in the area were fun to explore. We will definitely be back!

Friendly and helpful staff at every turn. Please go with your family and relax, unwind, feed horses, hike, bike, hot tub, and relax. We drove 12 hours from Chicago. Would do it again next month!

Summary: We are a large group of family members (25+) ranging in ages from 88 down to 1 so finding a place to go to for a Thanksgiving reunion is hard to say the least. Wolftrap farm was almost perfect for our group. The manor house is on of 7 properties available and all are easy walks to the manor house for big meals. Don’t let the outside fool you because the age of house can be seen there. Inside is amazing. Extremely clean and well stocked with all paper products and toiletry items you will need. Beds are very comfortable and well maintained. Outside the views are spectacular and you have plenty of space and activites available to fill up any given day. Everyone had a blast!!
