1 Bedroom House in Pilar, Embudo

Authentic and historic adobe home. Ideal for your honeymoon, weekend get away or retreat. Complete with very private sun lounge featuring clawfoot bathtubs and dry/wet sauna. Both, running hot and cold water. Perfect, no matter the season! This historic and restored home has private views of horseshoe canyon and a prime view and access to the river. The property is eco-friendly and sustainable. Energy efficient appliances, on demand water heater, rain catches, composting, edible gardens are all part of this eco-friendly experience. The gardens are extensive and a true gardener’s delight. (If you garden, this truly is a must see.) Everything is historically restored, custom and or brand new. Renters have unlimited access to shared covered outdoor seating - perfect for stargazing on our many cloudless nights. Hotdogs and marshmallows are a must for roasting at the large firepit. Which offers views of river sunsets and the newly panted espalier fruit and nut orchard. Please note: As this is a 500-year-old home, it is very close to authentic in some ways. Floors can be a bit uneven, staircase is very narrow. There are not “traditional” sofas, rather, there are bancos. All these authentic features go to make staying in this home a more genuine Southwest experience. Be sure to read the home manual when you arrive. The history of the house is a fascinating read. Disclaimer: This space is NOT for those with limited mobility or for children under the age of 8. We do have steps, a narrow ladder to the loft bedroom and historically accurate floors. Please - contact me at your convenience if you have any questions or concerns about your potential stay. I’m always happy to help. One of the best parts? Private river beach access. The river is just a few short steps away from this home. The river front and beach are private and as our renter, you do not have to share it with others who float the river. Please text me upon your arrival at the given number to assure your successful self-check in. Also for any questions you may have. Pilar is a tiny, quiet riverfront village 22 minutes and 15 miles south of Taos. From spring to fall it is quite lively, as we are close to the intersection of Kit Carson National Forest and the Santa Fe National Forest. We are also at the epicenter of the Rio Grande Gorge and the Rio Grande River. This area is where all the rafting companies put in, going from a class 1 to a 5 within a few miles. We are also close to eight ski resorts within a one-hour drive from the location. When walking the riverfront you will see metal art, tiny houses, wine vineyards and many recreating visitors. Plus tons of wildlife, some small agriculture and many nice vehicles. Having a vehicle is a must, one with four wheel drive is preferable but not required to access property. Although it does add a huge plus to your outdoor experience in this area. As our canyon has a back entrance that consists of epic plateau switch backs that are thrilling to drive and lead to thermal hot springs. There is shuttling available for river running, and many opportunities for biking, running, hiking and cruising. In front of the Yacht club is a public bus that runs to Taos and down to Santa Fe. Plus a airport bus shuttle bus through Taos Ski Valley. Disclaimer: This space is NOT for those with limited mobility or for children under the age of 4. We do have steps, a narrow ladder to the loft bedroom and historically accurate floors. Please - contact me at your convenience if you have any questions or concerns about your potential stay. I’m always happy to help. Although this space comfortably will sleep three. It does have extra room for sleeping pads and additional adult travelers. Bring beach stuff, you'll be happy you did. We are high altitude with good amount of sun exposure here so be mindful of skin and eye care. New Mexico is dry most of the time, except during monsoon season (July). Also this is a multi building property and I alone live onsite. Sometimes I am home and sometimes I am not. However you can always expect a private experience.

Summary: Nicely restored adobe home in a funky Taos style. My one thought was it was a shame to not have the master bedroom in the large "yoga" room downstairs.

Summary: My wife and I stayed 3 nights and greatly enjoyed the experience. The property wasn't just a place to stay after adventuring around the area, it was part of that adventure and the experience. My best advice to other travelers is to read all the info about the property before booking. Aspects of what makes this property unique may be out of the comfort zone of some. The owner does a great job of providing all info about the property in the listing so anyone booking should understand what to expect. If you are looking for something a little different, something truly local, something rustic yet not, I recommend this property.

Summary: I would recommend on your way in you stop at Taos or in Santa Fe to grab food and anything such as ice that you might need. There is the Pilar Yacht Club & Cafe but they have limited hours. I would also recommend looking at a map or printing a map or directions since you will have spotty service getting there. The directions given tell you the wrong street to turn on (at least the did for us, I let the owner know!) so it helps to have an idea of where you're going. Even with the swamp coolers (which like another reviewer mentioned take a lot to fill) the house does not cool off easily despite the outside temps dropping to the 50's in July. I would also be ready to sweep up bugs. We were covered in box elders which if you accidentally step on one it sends out a chemical that attracts MORE. We also had lots of mites, moths and spiders. There are a lot of spiderwebs and dead bugs all over the house. We had bugs crawling on us and our things the whole time we stayed. Including on our toothbrushes, containers of food, in and under shoes, in my cosmetic case, in the bedding, etc. Shake out your linens (even if you're just drying your hands after washing). It was also hard to use the restroom with dead bugs surrounding us and alive bugs crawling toward us and on the toilet paper. If you don't do well with bugs this place isn't for you. I will say that the stairs are very narrow and could use an additional handle or two. They are not wide enough to fit your entire foot so I recommend backing down them. For reference I'm normal weight and lift weights regularly so it's not a mobility issue. I wouldn't trust a child under 7 or 8 to go down them without supervision. We chose to leave early after a restless night in the heat. We both tossed and turned on the hot jersey sheets with the swamp cooler, fan blasting and all the windows open. We both flicked at least half a dozen bugs off us while trying to sleep. There is also no sauna, it was explained to me that it's installation was delayed with COVID. The river is across a road and is shared with others, not private. You will see kids playing around and rafts coming through. There is a nice shallow section that you can walk through and a deeper section to play in. The outdoor tubs require you to clean them out before use but are nice to do a quick cold plunge in to cool off. The back area is completely private and fenced in which is nice. The history of the building and restoration are beautiful.

Summary: This property exceeded our expectations in every way possible, and our expectations were very high from the beginning. Jennifer has created an amazing getaway/warm cozy retreat, and we are so thankful that she is sharing it with the public. She cut absolutely no corners in the renovation of this historic property, while keeping the property true to its origins. This property has anything and everything you need to hide out and relax for a time while its amazing location provides so many very convenient opportunities to explore the Land of Enchantment. The private spa area is a crazy bonus! You must take advantage of the secluded/outdoor twin clawfoot tubs regardless of the weather conditions...you won't regret it! We are so looking forward to our next visit!

Summary: We had a great time at Jennifer's property. It truly is beautiful and has so many different areas to relax. Jennifer does live on site, which we didn't realize, but she is not intrusive. Just a few things we wanted to comment on...we had some issues with not washing the laundry properly. I suggested to Jennifer that it might be better to not have guests wash the laundry. The bedroom is a full bed (which it states in the listing), and you do have to climb a ladder to get to the bed. The AC is an evaporative cooler, which took about 10-12 pitchers to fill up. A real AC would be nice, so you don't have to take the pitchers up the ladder (it was really hot while we were there). This place does not disappoint. The area is filled with many outdoor recreation. And the outdoor showers are incredible! You won't regret booking this place.
