Critter Mountain Ranch is situated on Granath Mesa, 2 1/2 miles from Dolores, part of a two-site alpaca ranch.
The ranch is perfect for a family get-away, writer's retreat, artist's haven, pastor's retreat, or just a place to relax in the quiet rural setting.
The ranch style house has an attached garage where you can park your car out of the elements along with your bikes, ski gear, etc.
The house will accommodate eight. Children are welcome.
There is a large living area with two enclosed porches where you can lounge, enjoy the great scenery, or even sleep. The house has two bedrooms with queen-size beds and two bathrooms. A porch facing south allows you to view the La Plata Mountains to the east, Mesa Verde to the south, and The Sleeping Ute Mountain in the southwest as you relax in the comfy chairs and enjoy the barbecue.
A fully equipped kitchen has a refrigerator, stove, microwave, and toaster oven as well as many cooking utensils and dishes. A large dining table in the living area seats eight comfortably. We also have a washer and dryer.
There is a fenced-in yard with a doggy door into the garage so your canine friend can accompany you.
A caretaker will be available to answer any questions you might have.
Critter Mountain Ranch has 16 alpacas which you can watch from the windows and even visit the barn as long as a ranch hand accompanies you. You may see a rancher in the early morning and/or evening as the alpacas are fed and watered.
Biking trails are within a mile of the property and The Nature Center at Butler Corner, with six miles of hiking trails is two miles away where you can see more alpacas, goats, and other farm animals.
Hesperus Ski Area is forty-five minutes away, Telluride one hour, Mesa Verde an hour to the south, and Canyonlands and the Navajo Reservation just a short drive away.
Dolores, the nearest town, is two and a half miles from the ranch and has many amenities including a grocery store, general store, hair stylist, several restaurants, gas stations, Post Office, and library.

Summary: We really enjoyed the house and property. The owner comes to feed the alpacas and let our kids join in on the fun. Location is just outside the charming town of Dolores, CO and was a quick drive to the national parks and monuments. Will look to book again if we go out that way in the future.

Summary: Peaceful and quiet, with plenty of room for 4 adults. Home is a beautiful blend of European and Western design and furnishings. We enjoyed watching the alpacas outside and speaking with Kathie about them.

Summary: This home is on the Mesa above the town of Dolores. Convenient to town. On a cistern and water hauling so long showers baths laundry even extra flushing discouraged by signs throughout the house. That was not clear when we were researching. Kitchen is stocked and functional but pots and pans are rough and it’s not the cleanest. It works fine though. No dishwasher. Porch is nice but needed a good sweeping. Views incredible. No hiding from the wind. Yard fenced but a bit sticker-y and muddy. Yard seating would be nice. Inside things are decent with lighting, WiFi, beds and side tables. One or two lamps need TLC. Some sheet sets are nice some less than. Extra quilts were very nice. Nice closet spaces with hangers throughout. We always bring our own pillows thankfully. And our own Kleenex. The sunrooms are lovely. Sliding glass doors and screens very difficult to open and close. All in all overpriced with the cleaning fee ($200!?) damage deposit (for what??) and insurance (for what??) — double what you see online to account for fees. Worth it if this location, views and creature comforts without particularities satisfy you. The alpacas are cute. Owner is there early and late to unobtrusively care for them. Great home base for launching off on regional day trips. With some added details and upgrades from deferred maintenance, could be GREAT. We all enjoyed it.

Summary: My wife loved this place. The location is great, the host is accommodating, the Alpaca are interesting to watch. The view and location are spectacular. The more comfortable you are with nature the happier you will be. This is high dessert, water and wild fires are issues. Thee modified how I cooked and took a little pleasure out of that aspect. There is a new path from V2 to Dolores that comes out just east of the school. An easy walk to town but not as easy going back. Other hikes are graet.

Summary: We had a wonderful time staying here for a long weekend. Kathie the host was very friendly and we had a great time meeting the alpacas on the farm, they're very cute and friendly creatures. This place is a real home, not just a rental property, and it has a great feel, much better than the pictures express. Sitting on the porch at night you have such an expansive view of the surrounding nature that you can really unwind. If you're in the area to visit Mesa Verde or Telluride, this is a charming getaway house.
