Summary: I loved the house. There’s alot to say so I’m going to fill you in on the most important parts, good and bad. The house is beautiful. It’s big, and it’s clean. You can see the ocean. And if you can get it to it, it yas the most beautiful private waterfall I’ve ever seen. And I’ve seen a few. The location is remote and it has a security guard at all times. Getting there will be scary the first time believe me. Specially if it’s raining. Not made for the for inexperienced drivers. I would suggest a spotter. Unfortunately it’s not easy to find it’s on a road that turns into dirt and it’s bumpy. I highly suggest a 4x4 vehicle because of the incline at the end. It’s very steep. I did it on a 2 wheel drive car but it’s not the safest when it rains. Once you go up and down that road a couple times it gets much easier. The first time is a little scary. The neighborhood is great. We had some of the guards help is get to the house and carry the luggage because it was raining hard. The house has no A/C bit it’s not hot and there’s plenty of fans. I would definitely rent this place again. It was beautiful.

Summary: Beautiful location and house! The staff is very helpful as well. There is also a private waterfall nearby (Cazuela Park) which we loved. Keep in mind it is in nature, so you will hear lots of birds and see all kinds of wildlife. The driveway will be a bit of a challenge if you're not an experienced driver as it is steep and tough to turn around at the top. But it didn't bother me, and our front wheel drive rental car was able to do it OK, though most people may prefer a 4wd. It is near Matapalo Beach which is fantastic (not packed like some). Was a great stay overall. Would return for sure.

Summary: I spent 2 weeks at Casa Tucan with my husband & teenaged son. Then 1 week by myself. And, then the last week with 2 girlfriends. Every one of us thoroughly enjoyed our stay. It’s very well located for driving to the attractions & activities in the area. Busier spots like Manuel Antonio and Dominical are 25-40 mins away. Amazing local beaches are just 15 mins away. Driving through the small Tico town of Portalon with lovely colourful homes, & small roads full of children, dogs & chickens is a treat. The little store in town carries lots of basics. 2 massive stores just north of Quepos airport carry everything. Be sure to eat at Langosta Feliz just 10 mins south on the highway, and at A’Kachete at Playa Matapalo 15 mins away, and Soda Eva (breakfast & lunch only) just 5 mins south. Everyone who works at Portalon is so helpful & very good at their jobs. Guillermo, the property manager, is very responsive & helpful. The house is beautiful with the most amazing patio. Lots of little geckos & cicadas to keep you entertained. A trick to better enjoy the patio after dark is to turn a light on far from where you’re sitting so the bugs are drawn there away from you. My recommendation is to close the doors & windows after dark, & to leave the lights off near the doors, both inside & out unless you enjoy running through a small swarm of flying beetles. Also - keep your food in containers or in the fridge or the ants will find what you leave out. The kitchen was a joy to cook in. The openness & view are beautiful. It wasn’t as stocked as most would be at home, but we found everything we needed to prepare each meal just fine. It was about 4-8 degrees Celsius cooler at the house than down at town or the beach. Lovely for hanging out comfortably. We also found it to be much more humid at the house. So much so that our beach sarongs & towels would feel more damp after hanging on the balcony railing for 2 days even with a fan blowing on them. The only thing that I could say wasn’t perfect for us was the drive up to the house and parking at the house. The road is quite steep with potholes as is typical for the area. But the gravel & stones are quite loose. It’s definitely driveable, but it took getting used to. The driveway is much more steep than the road, but it’s got two paved tracks. The parking area at the top is small, with a huge rock you have to drive over to turn the car around. A 4x4 with higher clearance is strongly recommended.

Summary: This was my first time in Costa Rica and my experience of staying at the Toucan House was beyond my expectations. I was traveling with my husband and another couple and we are all over age 60. The lay out of the home made it very comfortable for 2 couples. The outdoor living room was a great place to observe birds and had a view that was magnificent. The kitchen was well appointed and made cooking on vacation feel like a pleasure rather than a chore. We also had a local prepare our last meal before leaving and brought it to the house. It was delicious and the clean up was done for us. We enjoyed a visit to Manuel Antonio Park, but were grateful to get back to house because of the tranquility. I had a wonderful time walking to the waterfalls and swimming in the river. We stayed three nights, but it did not feel long enough. I hope to return and explore more of the area.
