Positive: So quiet and dark at night and the hotel section is separate from the property owner's home and bird viewing area, yet close. Balcon Tumpiki is a known birder stop near Mindo with hummingbird feeders and a banana pole to attract various tanagers, toucans, and others, but miles from any town. It also has forest trails on the property that you can take that begin right outside your door. I saw many endemics there and hiked trails daily. They are well-marked; muddy. Glad I had mud boot covers and hiking poles. I imagine chiggers are an issue, however I treated my clothes ahead of time and had no problem with insects. This area is high up in the cloud forest. In winter it rains Daily and sometimes 20 hrs a day and it has cool temps probably in the 50s. Most of the time there is a soft mist. The sun rarely came out. The humidity can be hard on your phone and laptop; both of which I had issues with while there. Electrical outlets were USA friendly. Loved having the balcony outside my room. Room was ample size; bedding warm; shower not hot enough for me; no heaters. The owners, Ronald and Maria, became family to me. Maria is an excellent cook and made me delicious breakfasts daily with a variety of items. I only ate one dinner ($10) (I'm a light eater at night) and it was a massive amount of food. Small empanadas as an appetizer; then the main course where the chicken was tender; the mushroom sauce delicious; buttered rice; and three kinds of vegetables plus papas fritas and dessert. Yum! Ronald and Maria took me several places of interest - and added birding stops for my pleasure as lower elevation cloud forest has different birds than here. If birding is your main draw, this is a wonderful place to stay. I noticed that most birders that come, only visit the feeders for a few hours. To me, the forest is where it's at and where you find species out in their environment. If you come to Balcon Tumpiki, you will be well taken care of.

Positive: Exceptional basic accommodation. Maria is an excellent cook. Great for hummingbird, tanager, toucan endemics. Several kilometers of cloud forest trails and dirt roads, some easy walking, others a little steep and muddy.
Negative: It is at the end of a sometimes rough 3 km dead end road but Uber got me all the way there.
