7 Bedroom House in Criccieth, Porthmadog

Carregfelen is a beautiful, unusual and quirky 14th Century 7 bedroom Manor House set on its own wooded 2000 acre Estate between Porthmadog and Criccieth on the Llyn Peninsula. Sleeping up to 11 guests, it was extended in the 1920's by the owner's Uncle (Clough Williams-Ellis - Portmeirion), and is full of charm and character. Outside are sloping lawns, a wildflower meadow and orchard which burst with fruit over the summer. Inside are twisty corridors, marvellous antique furniture and staircases that date back to the 1600s. The ancient oak woodlands are a joy to explore. The ground floor comprises a beautifully furnished hall, a cosy sitting room with an inglenook, a magnificent dining room with an oak refectory table and a lovely kitchen. Trot up two steps to find a sitting room for children – sofa, toys, books, TV – and two good bedrooms (one double and one twin). On the upper floors are the rest of the bedrooms, full of character and style, and big old-fashioned bathrooms with up-to-the-minute showers. No need to fight for the views: every room has one. Add to this high speed broadband and contemporary fittings and you won’t want to stray too far.
Carregfelen nestles on the private, leafy Wern Estate on the edge of Snowdonia. This is the gateway to enjoy the very best that the Llyn Peninsua has to offer. The mountains of Snowdonia; the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways; Glorious Castles; Walking, Sailing and Fishing. The delightful seaside town of Criccieth is only minutes away, with its sandy beach and splendid Castle, as is the superb beach at Black Rock. Snowdon is only 35 minutes away - either climb to the summit or take the little railway and enjoy a drink in the new cafe.

Summary: Birthday weekend celebrations in a beautiful historical property close to seaside towns and Eryri National Park. Accommodation was amazing, everything we needed for a fantastic weekend climbing Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) and a forty minute picturesque drive to the Zip World centre in Bethesda. Great property, highly recommended, looking forward to a return visit. Thank you so much.

Summary: Great location for exploring this area of Wales, close to great beaches and amenities but rural enough to feel away from it all.

Summary: Great spot to stay - we had enough space for a family of four plus grandparents comfortably and everything needed to make us feel at home. It's a lovely house and the kids loved exploring and discovering the different rooms all furnished comfortably and with charm and history. The weather wasn't super for us so we also enjoyed the fireplaces and cosy feel in the evenings. Lots of great beaches and castles to explore and a few rainy options also. Viv was very welcoming and always happy to help and we felt well looked after. We would definitely consider returning (other than for a very long journey there and back it was ideal). Thank you!

Summary: Our whole family were intrigued by the unusual layout of the house with its nooks and crannies, and 'historical' contents just like a mini stately home! A great place for a game of hide-and-seek. Everything was supplied for a successful self-catering holiday, with special appreciation to Vivien for looking after us so well, from the lovely meal she cooked for our arrival, the beautifully laid table in the dining room, enhanced by the candelabras. We had everything we needed to make our first meal so enjoyable, not like the traditional mad scramble. We had plenty of room to spread out. The children each had their own room, and the beds were very comfortable. As far as the kitchen was concerned, all utensils were more then adequate. Plenty of crockery, cutlery and glasses, cooking pans and dishes, double oven and the all-important dishwasher for a family of 10, made our stay all the more enjoyable. It was nice to have Vivien and Anne to do a mid-week clean, even though this was totally unexpected, and to know that Vivien was contactable if we had any problems. She was very friendly and offered help if we needed it. We were lucky with the weather, except for one wet day. Otherwise dry and sunny, but it could have been a little warmer, but this did not stop us getting out and about and seeing the local places of interest. Some of us climbed Snowdon! Altogether a really good holiday.

Summary: Loved the house and grounds, it was as if we were guests in a family home. The house was full of interest, the garden delightful and the grounds provided a safe and secure environment for the children to play in. Having toys already there also helped keep the children amused when the weather wasn't quite so pleasant! The location was stunning with so many places to visit and things to see and do within such close proximity. A very helpful housekeeper to keep an eye on things made sure that everything was as it should be. Would definitely consider a return visit and would have no hesitation in recommending this place to family and friends.

The property is really handy for all the nearby attractions but nicely tucked away for complete privacy. Highly recommend

Summary: We have now visited Carregfelen on about 10 occasions. We first discovered it in 2003, which we think was the first year the owners had allowed visitors to enjoy their wonderful house. For the last 4 or 5 years we have said to our family ‘Enjoy this as we will probably not return to Carregfelen next year’. And each time a deputation of grandchildren has demanded we come back the following year. We love it there, but don’t want the rest of the family to run out of things to do there – little chance of that it seems. We are three generations of visitors, and the house fits us comfortably, with each part of the family having its own space in which to chill out (including two separate staircases and plenty of bathrooms) yet with sufficient communal space to fit us all. The house and surroundings simply lend themselves to having fun, relaxing and being together. It is a perfect base: spacious, quirky, comfortable and well equipped. We are always very happy to re-discover that the owners are continually improving the house and gardens, and that they present us with a beautifully clean, tidy and welcoming house each time we arrive. The area is rich in castles, railways, beaches, mines, restaurants and pubs, surrounded by beautiful countryside, but with tranquillity when needed. We feel privileged to have enjoyed Carregfelen for so long, and look forward to doing so again and again.
