Positive: Exceptional hosts - from arrival to departure, everything felt easy and taken care of. The room - and the whole house - was extraordinarily clean, with little extras (like the hospitality tray) further evidence of the hosts’ attention to detail. Beds were among the most comfortable I’ve experienced.

Negative: I genuinely can’t think of anything!

Positive: Karen and Alison at the Blue Swallow are both just fabulous hosts. So helpful and caring. All of the rooms and facilities were just spotless, fresh and crisp. The breakfasts were so wonderfully prepared, cooked and served. Outstanding in today's world.

Negative: Shower cubicle is a bit small (or perhaps we are too big?). Bacon was a bit strong and gamey for my tastes.

Summary: First-class accommodation in every sense at a very reasonable price. 5 star.

Positive: The best BnB or hotel I’ve stayed in my 30 years of traveling life around the world. It feels like staying the weekend at a friend’s home, very comfortable, homey, but of hotel standards. You’ll be welcomed by homemade chocolate tiffin and fresh milk for tea/coffee. Morning breakfast is made to order, but portion is generous, so be prepared for a feast. Lots of thoughtful details which accommodations nowadays would want to minimise. Karen and Alison are genuinely friendly and are there to support. They demonstrate the Scottish hospitality and friendliness beyond its best. The location is brilliant too, close to town centre, there’s also bus 508 takes you to Ullswater in 30mins, then another hour straight to Windermere. A cheap scenic ride, highly recommended.

Negative: I stay in room 7, can hear the plumbing of room 6 (shower room right behind my wall), but it’s just normal in British houses.

Summary: I would give more than 5 stars

Positive: To call this guest house faultless would be to do a disservice to the owners. I cannot speak highly enough of our stay. The hosts were so friendly, and the room was immaculate. The price was very affordable and the location perfect, having several castles and places of interest nearby. Ullswater Lake within a 20 minute drive, and located right in the middle of town, with secure, private parking. The owner shared some local tips for some great places to eat and drink. The attention to detail and service level were absolutely second to none. Including complimentary home made treats in the room, which was a lovely touch (and delicious). A wonderful cooked breakfast in the morning, with our choice of exactly what we wanted. The vast breakfast menu considered all allergy and dietary requirements. This is without question, the best night's stay we have had in the country. Blue Swallow Guest House has set the bar for what all other bed and breakfasts should aspire to be like. Thank you, and we will absolutely see you again when we next travel to Cumbria.
