Positive: Our stay at Vovó Luisa was an exceptionally enjoyable experience, probably the best rental of my life. This is completely due to the hosts, D. Lurdes and her family, who are wonderful people who provided a fantastic home and made certain that we had everything we needed to make our stay a special one. Nestled in the tiny village of Alcouce and surrounded by orchards and vineyards, the little house is so comfortable that it could be a permanent home. In fact, the remodeled house was the home of D. Lurdes' grandparents. The home sleeps 2 people very comfortably (4+ if needed). The village is very peaceful, even during the harvest season when we were there. The location is ideal for short trips to Regua and to the numerous wineries along the Douro River. It's a fun, 20 minute drive to the river along winding roads with spectacular scenery. The refrigerator was generously stocked with food, and there were huge baskets of locally produced nuts, breads and fruits, plus a decanter of local port wine. It was better than 5-star treatment. Immaculately clean and warmly decorated, the bedroom and bath are quite sophisticated. There is air-conditioning and new fixtures and appliances including a clothes washer. The kitchen is better equipped than most people's permanent homes! It is a little nest that you won't want to leave despite the world-class scenery and wineries outside the door! This house is a very old structure built of large blocks of thick, granite stone. A couple of the adjacent stone structures were abandoned, but for us this just added to the rustic and ancient feel of the little village. You really feel as if you have gone back in history to a much simpler time. The contrast of a very modern little home inside walls of ancient stone gives Vovó Luisa a special and unique feeling. Of course the most special part of our short stay at Vovó Luisa was D. Lurdes and her family who treated us like we were one of their own.

Positive: The cottage was perfectly clean and very comfortable. Breakfast was n the refrigerator and could have fed us fully for a week! Plus, our hostess brought by fresh cherries and eggs mid-way through the stay. We loved walking along the orchards and vineyards and slept well in the quiet village. Our stay at Casa da Vovo Luisa was a highlight of our visit to Portugal and we would definitely return.
Negative: We weren't good enough drivers to pull our car into the very tight driveway, but parking along the road was fine for our weekend stay. We wish that the streetlight wasn't so bright, but the vole shutters did a great job of blocking the ambient light.
Summary: Tranquil stay on the edge of the valley.
