Chatham Other | Charming Farm House on 460 Acre Working Farm

3 Bedroom Place in Chatham, Old Chatham

The Pond House is a late 19th century farmhouse, completely restored in 2010. Set amidst a 460 acre working farm on a quiet dirt road. It has 3 bedrooms, 2 full baths, living/dining room, kitchen, den, laundry, deck and Wi-Fi.
Visitors on our farm are welcome to collect fresh eggs in the morning for breakfast. In the spring, summer, and fall watch the Black Angus graze on the pastures while drinking coffee, walk the trails through the woods, enjoy a picnic in one of the high pastures overlooking the Catskills, cool off with a jump off the dock into the pond, cook dinner in the fully stocked kitchen, or read a book on the deck overlooking the pond. In the winter the pastures and barns are quiet as most of the animals have gone to market. Sledding, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, skating on the pond, and winter walks make up the days, weather permitting of course.
Chatham is a charming small town with an independent movie theatre, a bakery, coffee shop, cheese shop, local brewery, local food co-op, several restaurants, an independent bookstore, and a farmer’s market in season. Summary: The description and pictures of this listing do not do this place justice. The house is wonderfully appointed and exactly as described; it has everything you will need for a week. The property is a what sets this place apart. It complete escape from suburban and city life. The sounds of the frogs, crickets, cows kept us entertained for hours. We fished, kayaked, and swam in the pond every day....and even caught fish! The house sits on a dirt country road, with a few lovely neighbors nearby, but is only a few minute drive from Chatham with great restaurants, supermarket, and cute stores. We will definitely come back.

Summary: My family (two parents and a 6 year old) spend one full month (July) on Highland Farm and it was fabulous. You can sit for hours on the deck enjoying the changing light and colors on the hills, pond and cows. Listen out for the frogs and screech owl. And the nighttime sky from the deck is spectacular and dramatic. There is plenty of room to roam and walk around the farm with beautiful close and distant views. The farmhouse sits in what amounts to a private valley, with very little traffic on the road. The pond is not just pretty to look at, swimming in it is a joy. Oh, how could I fail to mention the farm fresh eggs laid in a coop just feet from the house for our picking each day. We had a spectacular time staying at Highland Farm and would highly recommend.

Summary: Lovely old country home with great view of pond out back. We did NOT know it sat right on a dusty country road. Great new workable kitchen, but needs to replace beat up silverware, old cloth napkins. No window shades in downstairs bedroom, but owner got some installed a few days later. Nice big bath upstairs. Two nice bedrooms upstairs, towels are old and mismatched, need to be replaced, some of the sheets had holes in them. A nice bed is very important when staying two weeks, ours was very hard so we bought egg crate toppers, for two beds. We really did enjoy our stay, the owner Andrew was very accommodating. But the details I mentioned would really make it a little gem, and make all the difference. For the weekly cost, we expected nicer amenities.

Summary: We had stayed in many rental houses & this is the 1st one I decided to write a review. It's truly a special place for our family. The house is very clean & tastefully decorated with many antiques all over. I especially appreciated the many green products that the owner provided. It also has many board games to keep the kids busy. The scenery & the house are a lot more charming than the pictures. One important thing I want to point out is this farm doesn't have the typical animal smells you will encounter in other farms. In fact you won't realized you are in a farm house until you see the rolling hills, the pond & the black Angus gazing in the pasture from the windows. It's very peaceful! We visited many interesting farms in the area & bought a lot of healthy produces. We also did star gazing at night from the deck. The sky is very clear & the air is so refreshing. The owner is very friendly & easy to work with. Highly recommend this house to all my friends! Just FYI: We used our phone as GPS & it guided us to a wrong house. You might want to download the direction before you go as many areas on the way from the city don't have reception (We use Verizone & T-Mobil). But the reception in the farm & house is fine. My son insisted to write his own review too. So the following is from a kid's perspective We love love the home! Beds for up to 8 people including the inflatable one.Great view for a sunset and you can fish or swim in the lake in the summer.Lots of fish!Does not include a diving board.Lots of animals too, like turkeys, pigs, cows and even 2 dogs!In the morning we like to check eggs for breakfast from the chicken coop!Once while picking with my cousin (I am a kid.)we saw a chicken laying a egg!Our family had such a great time there that we didn't want to leave!

Summary: Four very particular travellers stayed in early fall. The house was immaculate and comfotable. Fresh eggs for breakfast from a nearby hen house. Glorious view over the pond to a meadow beyond as we dined on the raised deck. Will definitely come back to Highland Farm.

Summary: Had a great weekend at the Highland Farm, house is clean and well maintained, which was a nice change from some houses we've stayed in that good in the pictures, until you get there and everything is ratty and dirty. For myself, wife and 2 kids, the house was the perfect size, and location also allowed us to be within a stone's throw of Chatham, the many pick-your-own and working farms in the area, as well as a short drive to Shaker village in Hancock, and the energy and vibe in Hudson. Got fresh eggs each morning from the henhouse, and were treated to the beautiful views the house has of the pastures and the pond. Having spent a lot of time in the Hudson Valley, hands down this is the best location in the region, far enough north and away from the day-trippers in Rhinebeck and Cold Spring, but close to all the charm of Chatham and a plethora of activities to keep everyone happy. We'll be back.

Summary: We've now stayed at Highland Farm three times and love the peacefulness of the setting, in the midst of a real working farm. It's a refreshing antidote to urban life. The house is very nicely renovated, with great views out every window. From the beds to the fixtures, the arrangements are high-quality. The kitchen is top-notch for cooking up fabulous meals using the fresh meat and produce of Columbia County. We have visited the Saturday morning farmers' market in Hudson, the Hawthorne Valley Farm grocery store, and the Chatham Food co-op, to name a few of the places where one can easily find provisions. The house is great for kids as well - ours love checking the chicken coop and collecting fresh eggs for breakfast, as well as the long walks through the fields and woods that we take together as a family. We always leave reluctantly, feeling refreshed and looking forward to our next visit to Highland Farm.

Summary: We had a fantastic time in the house. The house was just renovated and it was done with a lot of taste with antics, recycled furniture. The owners are very caring and welcoming people and they shared with us a lot of information, especially where to buy organic and biodynamic food as the whole area has farmers who produce small quantities of top quality food. In the farm they grow chickens , turkeys, pigs and have cows. We rented in February so only the hens were there but the kids had a fantastic time picking up the eggs every morning!
