Charras House | Chateau Gite, Charras, Nr. Angouleme, Poitou-Charentes, France

2 Bedroom House in Charras

Set within the walled grounds of the 1748 Chateau de Charras, L’Orangerie was originally used for fruit ripening. It has been sympathetically renovated with many of the original features retained, and is now divided in two: 'La Grande' (to the left of the picture) and 'La Petite', to the right hand side. La Petite Orangerie offers spacious open-plan living with fantastic panoramic views across the Charente/Dordogne countryside. La Petite has 2 bedrooms and sleeps 4 adults or a family (plus a cot for baby!). The spectacular 13-acre grounds of the Château are yours to explore, with sweeping views, spacious lawns, tree-lined avenues, stone staircases, balustrades and orchards, providing a genuinely unique setting and sense of history. Within the grounds there is a heated swimming pool with terrace and sun loungers, as well as two tennis courts - one resurfaced 2017 and a table tennis table.
This delightful region, renowned for its fields of sunflowers, boasts beautiful, unspoiled countryside, while the small village of Charras offers a friendly general store/post office and boulangerie selling freshly baked bread and pastries.

Summary: A very well equipped and comfortable property set in an amazing setting. We felt like we had the grounds & pool to ourselves out of season and as regular tennis players particularly enjoyed the refurbished court! A good base for visiting into the neighbouring Dordogne or into Angouleme. Thanks to Avrina for the very warm welcome!

Summary: Milly, property owner, was great while booking and kept in good contact. A truly stunning place to be for the week, and the other people in the other properties on the estate (mostly owners that week) were incredibly welcoming. Would absolutely rent here again, we might even buy a place within the estate...it was just what we've always wanted to find in France but never quite found a place that ticks all the boxes. Also, I am Celiac, and the local restaurant made a gluten free pizza for me especially. Fantastic memories

Summary: We stayed here as a family of four and had an amazing week. The grounds are huge and much bigger than the pictures show. It took us 8 minutes to make a video of the area, walking to the tennis courts, table tennis area, swimming pool, the eleventh century church, round the chateaux and back. It is utterly unreal as you have views over the countryside and can choose from various benches in the grounds to sit with a glass of wine when the kids have gone to bed. Our accomodation was good but the only down side was that the outside area for us was in the shade during breakfast and dinner times. We had nobody staying in the two other houses near us though so moved our table to the balustrade and had amazing views over the hills throughout. This might be more difficult if you went in the English school holidays-we managed to sneak in early as we have the Scottish summer holidays. It seemed like it was only us in the grounds most of the time! All in all, I would definitely recommend this gite.

Summary: At Easter, my partner and I decided to take pot luck and explore an area of France south of Angouleme that we didn’t know, without breaking the bank. We weren’t quite sure what to expect from La Petite Orangerie, but it turned out to be an ideal base from which to tootle about the region. As it was holiday time, there were 20 or so staying in the chateau’s various properties, and while you could easily avoid them if you didn’t want to socialise, we were invited by Mark and Lorraine, the Irish couple who look after the chateau’s grounds, to join in a communal barbecue and associated jollities. I enjoyed the egg-throwing contest, but thought my knees were a bit too creaky for touch rugby… The accommodation was very clean and comfortable, with all the mod cons you’d expect, though we didn’t do much cooking, preferring to pig out at some of the excellent restaurants within striking distance (owner Milly has a selection of suggestions pinned to her corkboard). Angouleme itself is a historic town well worth a visit, and other places we enjoyed were Aubterre sur Dronne, with its stunning underground church carved into the limestone, the bustling market at Villebois-Lavalette, and the picture-postcard prettiness of Brantome over the border into Dordogneshire, though you’ll hear more English than French spoken there. Outside the holiday season I guess it’s pretty quiet, and none the worse for that if this is what you’re looking for, while during the summer holidays I imagine the pool and tennis court come into their own; and if Easter’s anything to go by, children won’t be short of playmates. We’ll definitely be back, unless they make touch rugby compulsory.

Summary: Two of us stayed at La Petite Orangerie for an extended weekend. It was the nicest gite we have stayed in for years. it is set in the extensive grounds of the chateau and a short stroll across the lawn takes you to the well maintained tennis court and swimming pool where there are several sun loungers for use by the guests. There is an orchard with fruit that you are welcome to pick from the trees and a table tennis table. The gite itself is well maintained, clean and comfortable. It has the use of the extensive chateau grounds and also has a smaller private garden. We loved the peace and quiet and also the pretty views from the dining room window. We appreciated the under floor heating when the weather changed. While we were there we visited Angouleme where we looked round the cathedral and later ate at Le Terminus which was excellent. Another great place to visit is Aubeterre sur Drone - about 45 minutes away - where we saw a cathedral that was built into the rock. There are several attractive villages nearby that have farmer's markets and lots of little cafes. I would certainly recommend La Petite Orangerie for a great holiday.

Summary: The gite is part of a Chateau dating from 1722 and has private secure grounds in which to wander or just relax. There is also a pool and tennis courts. The gite had all we needed including a BBQ. It was clean and well maintained. We would certainly go back as there are also lots of sights to see within the area.

Summary: Set in a quiet corner in the grounds of Chateau de Charras la Petite Orangerie is a little more private than some of the apartments. The piece of grass at the front is ample to spread out and enjoy outdoor eating without being over-looked. The apartment is charming and homely, the rooms perfectly comfortable for us and our two children. We have now had three summer holidays here. The apartment is the perfect informal base to completely relax and enjoy the old-world charm that makes the Chateau de Charras so special. There are plenty of books, games and DVDs for the odd wet afternoon. We really enjoy the pool, it's big enough for a bit of a swim and for the kids to play. Plenty of loungers to sit back in. The water is cold which is perfect for a very hot day. The bakery and shop in Charras provide fresh bread and daily convenience and the chance for a chat with one or two locals. The pace of life in this part of France is wonderfully calm and we really enjoy the no pressure lifestyle here. The owners are helpful and efficient.
