Negative: No heat, hence humid . Was told national law not to heat in May! 2 days earlier I was staying at an hotel in Milan which provided heat. No orange juice but some imitation . Very tortuous drive to reach the property . You better be an excellent driver and drive a short car to take the curves!

Positive: Breakfast was very good. Staff made espresso drinks to order. The view from the patio was amazing. There was a nice honor bar that came in handy. The bed was a good size and comfortable.
Negative: Driving to and from there was treacherous. It was a single lane road with no turnoffs for when you met a car. There were hairpin turns with no visibility. My husband is a great driver, but he was spent every time he had to drive on those roads. Unless you got into Varenna early, there were no parking spaces. We had to go to another town, pretty far down the lake. The view from the room was nice, but only from the side of the bed or the bathroom. There was no place to sit and enjoy it.

Positive: The view of Lake Como is absolutely incredible from the room we had - Camera Bianca. It was a really peaceful spot up on the hill. The room was spacious and clean. The hosts were super responsive and helpful. Parking was spacious and secure.
Negative: We drove to the property and access is tricky. Really windy narrow streets with super tight hairpin turns and tricky negotiations when faced with oncoming traffic. The route Google tells you to go is definitely not recommended - pay close attention to the detailed instructions the hosts send you. Taking Via alla Cava Alta is the more manageable route. Also, the room got a bit hot overnight (our trip was in early July). There didn’t seem to be air con unfortunately though there is a fan which is somewhat noisy. Not too bad and totally manageable for our 2 night stay. Opening the window helped a lot. You do have to plan out your eating out as it’s not too close to restaurants. There are one or two in Gittana which is around 10 mins walk up the hill, and there are some more at the lake front which would be around 15 mins down the hill. The hosts provided some great dining suggestions too.

Positive: The warm welcome and recommendations from Valentina set the tone for a wonderful visit at Crotto with stunning views from an interesting structure surrounded by trees and brilliant birdsong. We even heard a cuckoo at breakfast. We braved the narrow road which was an adventure! And the wider option still made us rather nervous going up and down to Varenna. The room was large and well equipped with sweeping views of the lake, as described. Breakfast was excellent, fresh and plentiful. The honesty bar was very welcome at a location that is not staffed all the time. Location close to the village…. A 15 min walk to our dinner at Semi di Grano (also very highly recommend - must book in advance, really - 6 tables). Delicious and original menu. Varenna the the bottom of the hill was exquisite. Parking in the station car park was efficient and reasonably priced.
Negative: Many have commented on the challenging drive up to the property. There is a VERY narrow and windy way which comes up from the SatNav or Google Maps. The recommended way, which we were sent, was much better but easy to miss first time around and all very challenging to foreign hire car drivers even as we got used to it! It was all worth it because of the stunning views and should be expected in the hills around the lakes. However as visitors who have passed the 75 year old mark, we were aware that accessibility of the property up from the car park and around the property could have been a challenge for those less fit than us. We managed but I believe the property and Booking.Com should make these accessibility issues quite clear.
