Positive: With a terrace that has a wonderful view meals are special. The food is good, and the breakfasts are very satisfying. All the staff are very friendly, helpful, and have good English and French.

Negative: The wifi is just fine for general use, but not for serious work.

Positive: This lovely women-run guesthouse is worth a special trip, especially if (like us) you're eager to support women's businesses in male-dominated Morocco. In Moulay Idriss, you'll get a view of daily life in Morocco that you'll never get in the touristy cities, but with enough infrastructure for visitors to be comfortable. The town's central plaza is full of cafes were you can get a hot drink or a juice or a grilled-meat lunch. It's a nice place for people- and donkey-watching. We enjoyed our walking tour of the town with Hajiba, who shared lots of information about daily life for her and other women in Moulay Idriss. The Roman ruins at Volubilis were an easy 45-minute walk away and were much more interesting than we'd expected. (The guesthouse will arrange a donkey ride there, if you'd like.) Breakfasts were ample and tasty, and the a la carte dinners we ordered were delicious (the best chicken pastillas we had during a month in Morocco!). If we'd organized things more in advance, it would have been fun to take a cooking or baking class at the guesthouse. These women definitely know how to cook! All of the staff members communicated with us well and kept the house nice and clean. As in any traditional Moroccan house in a hillside village, expect a lot of stairs. Hamid, their lovely English-speaking driver, can take you to or from Fes or Meknes, or on a driving tour of the region (Morocco's breadbasket), or just to the Roman ruins.

Negative: The wifi didn't work very well in our room, so we had to do our work in the central lounge areas. A TV would have been nice, but that wasn't a big deal.

Positive: Moulay Idriss Zerhoune can be a bit hectic, but Dar Zerhoune is a relaxed oasis in the middle of it, with cool quiet rooms below and a fantastic rooftop terrace on top - where you can lounge and have dinner and breakfast with breathtaking views into the valley (including Volubilis). There are a few steps up and down to reach it, so do consider the donkey option...
