Saint-Paul-de-Vence Hotel | Domaine du Mas De Pierre

Hotel in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, Saint Paul de Vence

Located in gardens bordered by olive trees, on the hills of Saint-Paul de Vence, Le Domaine du Mas de Pierre is a family residence of character with fountains, gardens, wells, green paths, porches and characteristic gates, and offers you the welcome of a luxurious Provencal residence. The establishment is composed of 9 Provencal bastides (characteristic country houses) consisting of 76 luxurious rooms and suites with their own garden or terrace, including the Bastide des Fleurs which unveils since June 2014 its 6 new suites and junior suites, and which offers a fully privatizable space (butler service in summer season). This exceptional place promises to combine the charm of a unique space with the services of a luxury hotel. Our gastronomic restaurant, La Table de Pierre, is masterfully directed by our Chef Maxime Leconte, a true globetrotter, who perfectly combines the flavors of the world with Provencal dishes. Also, our 2nd restaurant, the bistro Lis Orto, offers authentic dishes of the region in an atmosphere reminiscent of the famous bistros of Nice. You can have a drink, coffee or snack in the lounge bar, equipped with a fireplace and a library. Since the reopening of the Domaine du Mas de Pierre, a 6562 ft² spa has been added to the many services offered by the establishment. We offer a wellness area with a fully equipped fitness room, a heated indoor pool (hydromassage jets, counter-current swimming, aquabike...), 2 saunas, a hammam, a snow-cave, a lounge and an outdoor jacuzzi. Treatments/massages are performed in 12 dedicated treatment rooms located on the 1st floor, where there is also a solarium, an additional resting room and a nail salon. One of the highlights of our recent renovation, the Lagoon stands out as a true piece of paradise between the sea and the mountains. With its snack/drink service at the Bar Paillote, everything is planned to make you live a relaxing moment in the tropics. In order to make the youngest and the oldest in the family dream, the Jardin d'Alice was created. With its playground directly inspired by the fantastic universe of Lewis Carroll and its three trailers with specific activities, our animation team can take care of the children from morning to evening and this only during the French school vacations. On site, you will also find 4 fully equipped meeting rooms that can accommodate up to 120 people. They have large terraces overlooking the countryside and the latest communication technologies, such as Wi-Fi connection and video-conferencing facilities. Since the reopening in 2021 of the Domaine du Mas de Pierre after 18 months of renovations.

Positive: The rooms were excellent, Breakfast Buffet was one of the best we have encountered at a time when so many luxury hotels are moving away from buffet breakfasts. While we did not use the pool, it was excellent with lots of room for sunbathing and even little partial tents to retire to. The Pacific Island Lagoon pool, surrounded by sun bathing spots and umbrellas even some sandy beach sand was superb. It even had a connected wading pool for children. We did find a problem with a worn out mattress that sagged and was soft, too soft for folks with bad backs. But the staff immediately (the next day since they were fully booked) put us in a different room that was fabulous and had brand new firm mattresses. They could not have done more and were marvelously friendly and helpful. One not: this is a difficult place to find for those without GPS skills since the commune does not let the hotels post those little arrows at round abouts to help you find the hotel, so not their fault. But brush up on your GPS mapping skills before you try to find the hotel. The little country road leading to the hotel is off on the right from a roundabout if you are coming from the Autoroute. There is a tiny street sign hidden up by some trees for Route de Serres so just keep going around the roundabout and ignore angry shouts from other motorists. But once at the hotel, which is on your left as you mount the little country road with lots of narrow bits so be careful if you are driving a Rolls, you have to drive up to the gates and press a button that is to the left of the driveway to get reception to either open the gates or raise the barrier.
Negative: The food was an issue for us. The Bistro was OK but don't expect a Salade Nicoise to be what you expect. Frankly neither was Ceasar Salade what I expected since a lot of ingredients you had to cut and tear apart yourself and then you had to toss it yourself. While not entirely a "do it yourself" salade it was close. But their lamb for two was superb. They are very flexible if you need to make changes to the selections based on diet and health concerns. However their two starred chef menu in the main restaurant we found atrocious. We have reviewed many restaurants over our years as food and travel writers and this was some of the worst tasting food we have ever encountered in a fine restaurant. The presentation was immaculate. The executing likewise. But the taste combinations we only ate because it was the end of the day and we were starving. And it should be called a "tasting menu" since the sizes averaged just 4 bites each. Very trala but urgh! The lack of volume is made up for with many courses and in between courses. So just be warned. Go over the menu very carefully with the maitre 'd before you commit. Others, of course, may completely disagree with us. It is a very child friendly establishment and they make efforts to accommodate your children. It is also very dog friendly as well.
Summary: Marvelous stay in every way but the food which we found a challenge.

Positive: The whole property is amazing. We especially loved the wellness area, which was incredible.
Negative: It is difficult to walk anywhere from the property because of narrow roads. However, the resort provides a wonderful complementary shuttle service to the village up the hill.
