Camera Disclosure: There is a Snow Cam pointing away from the property to overlook the road for checking winter conditions. Additionally, a Ring Doorbell is installed on the exterior door near the driveway, focusing solely on the driveway area.
Winter Snow: The Bear Den is conveniently located near Highway 19, making it an easy drive, except during snowy conditions. In the event of snow, you will need to park your vehicle on Skyway Drive near Highway 19, where a streetlight provides illumination. From there, it’s a short walk (approximately the length of a football field) to the Bear Den. Please note that this may not be a suitable option for guests with mobility challenges or disabilities. Summary: This is our second stay and it was just as great as the first. The cabin was perfect for our needs. The cabin is not too far up the mountain and has a fabulous view. Quick in and out and close to everything we love about the area. The hummingbirds were a treat! There were no elk this time but we still have the memories of the babies we saw during the first stay.

Summary: We loved this place. It was clean, well stocked, comfortable seating and comfortable master mattress. (We didn't use 2nd bedroom). The location is convenient to so many places. We hiked to waterfalls, saw elk at Cherokee and rode the train in Bryson City. Sitting on the deck was lovely with hummingbirds visiting all the time and beautiful view of the mountains. There is some noise as it is not far from the main road, but it didn't bother us at all. The host was great and we would definitely come again!

Summary: Motorcycle noise all day, every day. Beds uncomfortable. I was looking forward to a nice quiet get away but found out to late that the property was to close to the main road thru Maggie Valley. The property was well kept and furnished well. I booked for a week but left a day early due to noise and beds.

Summary: We first stayed at The Bear Den last October. It was the perfect place to come back to after a long day of hiking. The hot tub, the recliners, and the fireplace all contributed to making it cozy and relaxing especially when we were sore and worn out 🙃. Great view out the back, and we even saw several elk walk right up the driveway! The bed was also quite comfortable. The best part though is that Don is a great host who goes out of his way to be helpful—we found this out when we decided to extend a vacation this winter by coming back to Maggie Valley after spending a week in Banner Elk. On short notice Don went above and beyond to accommodate us and it really capped off our trip on a high note. The location is great as well, only about 5 minutes away from Joey’s Pancake House in one direction (get there early in peak season, though not nearly as busy in winter), and the Blue Ridge Parkway in the other (both directions were closed for the winter but it was open right at the junction where you can access one trailhead). One thing to be aware of is that Google Maps doesn’t think you can turn left from the main road onto the drive—it will try to send you on a weird double-back-and-around route but we soon learned that it’s easier to ignore that and turn left (if you have a very large SUV it might be hard to make the turn, but for reference a Kia Sportage did just fine).

Summary: The view was amazing. The house was pristine clean and very adequately supplied. First time I have stayed at a VRBO and not had to go buy paper towels. The owner gave detailed instructions about the security system, tv, etc. The owner also made a lot of recommendations of places to eat. We will definitely be back.

Summary: This property was perfect for two of us to get away for Thanksgiving. House was decorated for Christmas and was very nicely furnished. It was close to Maggie Valley and a short drive to Waynesville. We will stay again if we are traveling alone.

Summary: We have stayed at this lovely home for several years. It is very comfortable and spotless. This year we had a female elk and her baby come up the driveway and snack on the tree outside the kitchen window. We love staying here every year.
