Summary: We had friends who had vacationed at Villa Maitagarria and raved about it. Last month my wife, two teenage daughters and I flew into Paris, took the TGV to Biarritz, picked up a rental car and drove the short distance to Villa Maitagarria. What a delight! Spacious, yet charming, secluded, yet convenient to amenities, Villa Maitagarria is truly a ‘home away from home.” The kitchen is well appointed, and it was wonderful to have laundry facilities. Whether one wants to chill and hang by the heated swimming pool and enjoy meals on the outside patio, or use the Villa as a home base to explore the Basque region, the options are all there. We took a day trip to Sare and rode the “Petit train de la Rhune” up the mountain for some panoramic views, ate mussels by an old fort in Saint-Jean-de-Luz, walked the beaches in San Sebastain, and delighted in the Guggenheim Museum just over the border in Bilbao Spain. In nearby Biarritz, the covered market Les Halles is not to be missed, and if you want to indulge yourself, head to the northern end of the Grand Plage and have dinner – or at least a drink – at the 19th century Hôtel du Palais. You will then have something in common with Empress Eugénie! Villa Maitagarria is highly recommended! J Golding

Summary: We all had a great stay. The pool was fantastic and being only a ten minute drive to the beach was a bonus. The villa was nice and spacious and the garden was a nice size. Although both could benefit from a little maintenance. Being close to the road meant you do hear the traffic in the day, but the evenings were quite enough. A great place to stay with the family.

Summary: My family (husband, two sons, sister and father) had a fantastic vacation at the Villa Maitagarria. The house is wonderful: charming and comfortable. The windows open up to a beautiful yard and we enjoyed swimming in the heated pool. My boys loved the beach just a short drive away. The food: particularly the bread, produce and cheese are unbelievable and we enjoyed many a delicious meal in Biarritz. (One of my favorites was La Cabane à Huitres). We crossed the border into Spain and visited an outdoor market sampling olives and cheese. We enjoyed shopping in Biarritz (love the espadrilles) and walking along the old promenade. It was the perfect vacation. Highly recommend!

Summary: My husband and I had been on a frenzied work schedule for months before arriving at the villa. The moment we pulled into the driveway the stress started to melt away. The villa is large--but so welcoming--overlooking beautiful, well-tended lush gardens and a sparkling pool. The french doors throughout the house allowed the cool air to circle through the villa and you never felt too far from nature. Everything was clean, comfortable, and lovely. The villa is set in the charming countryside, but is only a short drive to some of the most beautiful beaches we've ever seen. We spent our days exploring the nearby villages, beautiful old churches, and bustling cities, GPS made it surprisingly easy to get around. A few evenings it cooled down, so we enjoyed local wine and baked goodies in front of a roaring fire in the large fireplace. This would also be a great place for families or a group of the best friends. This was our first trip to the south of France, and the villa made it perfect! We are already mapping out dates to return to the villa next year!

Summary: We have stayed in many places on holidays over the years but the best has to be at Villa Maitagarria. The house was clean and charming, with everything we could possibly need and the pool was lovely. The warm reception we received after our very long journey was a standout. Wine, cheese, fruit, Basque gateau and foie gras plus luxurious bath products. We felt very special! Thank you!

Summary: We arrived here after some travel challenges --our stress and weariness melted within minutes in the sun, beauty and welcoming air of this lovely home. Rental homes face a tricky tension between adjusting to a variety of visitors while maintaining a feeling of home & aesthetic-- too often this is sacrificed for the anonymity of rental spaces. This incredible space-- inside & out-- made us feel welcome and at home-- the vibrant paintings, the beautiful garden surroundings (but not so particular that we couldn't relax into them), the treats of food and bath products that awaited us-- we felt as though we were arriving at the home of loving relatives. Of course-- the pool is fabulous-- morning & night-- the enclosed garden is perfectly private and the surrounding countryside is exceptional-- but the sense of comfort in this place made for a most magical holiday. We hiked up Rhune Mountain (great birds!) swam in the sea in Biarritz & Saint Jean de Luz, hiked from the house for an amazing French country meal in Arcangues accompanied home by the full moon, sampled pastries in local shops and dined under the stars relishing local cheeses and wines. We left goals for our next visit (surf lessons! adventure swims! Tapas in Spain...)-- and left relaxed and healthy--reinvigorated to our lives. Merci beaucoup pour une bonne visite!

Summary: My family and I didn’t know what to expect. Effectively, we gave a veto to our eleven year-old twins plus a friend. What if living in a French Basque Villa and former artist’s studio with plenty of space to comfortably fit our entire family only sounded cool to my wife and to me? What if the incredible romanticism of the place got trumped by social needs of the kids? Well, fortunately it all worked out. Louise and I got to stay in a place graced by history, art and tranquility—right next to a corn field with church bells ringing from the nearby hillside! Our kids moved right into sunning and swimming in a beautiful, stone enclosed garden and pool and ten minute hops into Biarritz for surfing lessons and almond macaroon runs. Don’t even think twice!

Summary: What a special time of year to enjoy Biarritz and the basque country. The house (and house manager) couldn't have been more welcoming and warm. Our evenings spent enjoying the magical "Biarritz en lumieres" activities and displays (runs from Dec 20th thru Jan 4), included: 2,500 lanterns launched from the beach, sound and light shows against the backdrop of ancient and beautiful buildings, an entire park guilded with lanterns and lights, were just some of the holiday splendors we enjoyed. Returning to the peaceful and bucolic corner of the world where the house sits, allowed us to take a bath, relax in front of a fire in the grand fireplace, and commune with one another for some much needed family time. Mornings were spent with the locals, in search of our daily bread. As we are pretty dedicated foodies, we took time out to visit local fabricators and artisans of foodstuffs such as jambon de Bayonne, an ancient and still operating grist mill and patisserie, a (new discovery for us) trip to a basque beer/cider manufacturing sagardoa cidererie, and a chocolate factory, to name a few...all within a 10 to 15 minute drive from the house! We were blessed with good weather the whole time (amazing to see many swimmers and surfers in the ocean at this time of year) and enjoyed several games of croquet in the large and beautiful yard. We are determined to return again to Villa Maitagarria!
