About Jimena
Jimena de la Frontera has a rich historical and cultural background, a quality that is frequently found among the features of the village. Its history dates backed to when it was first inhabited by the Romans, who called the village Obba. Later by the Moors who built on the existing castle, a landmark for which the village is known. It became a look-out post for the Christians in the war against the former (the Moors). The remains of the castle have fantastic views over the surrounding country side, the village below, the Alcornocales Natural Park and Gibraltar.
Presently, Jimena is better known for its international music festival, cork production, mushroom picking season and its natural park, located only one minute away from the house. This area of southern Spain is renowned as an outstanding area for hiking and hill walking, and even mountain biking; its easily accessible, diverse and stunning routes running through the national park, surrounded by beautiful flora are also a habitat full of biodiversity, perfect for those into activities such as bird- watching. The village is also known for its
unspoiled river, the Hozgarganta with its old watermills and the remains of the old Royal Bomb Factory commissioned by King Carlos III and dating back to the times of the siege of Gibraltar around 1777, when cannonballs were produced locally . There are a number of musicians and artists, local and from abroad, who have settled in the village and offer a wide variety of music, painting or ceramic courses. There is always an art exposition or concert of some sort occurring, as well as plenty of other activities, such as yoga, being held somewhere in the village or neighbouring villages.
There are many restaurants and bars to choose from, in some of the most exquisite traditional cuisine as well as many local delicacies are on offer, such as the very well known chanterelle and boletus mushrooms, wild asparagus and game from the Alcornacales. If you prefer, there is always the option to buy locally sourced fruit and vegetables, we recommend the world famous oranges from San Pablo; delicatessen such as chorizo and morcilla sausages from Ronda or locally produced goats cheese, just to mention a few. Fresh bread is also available buy from the local bakery. All these village shops are just 20 metres away from the house. Supermarkets and pharmacies can be found in the upper and lower sections of the village, which should provide all necessary house hold supplies.
Other services and leisure facilities within Jimena include a local health centre, an open air municipal pool and a covered swimming pool at the nearby camping. All within easy walking distance, as well as tennis and paddle courts located at the bottom of the village next to the indoor sports hall and several play parks for children. There is a gym in the lower village, as well as horse riding and a polo school just outside the village. Lessons can be arranged. Bike tours and rental is available.
Activities
For further horse riding activities there are facilities in Sotogrande and San Roque Country Club about 25 minutes away, as well as Santa Clara and Sotogrande Polo Clubs. Nearby, is the luxurious Sotgrande Marina with a variety of boutiques and international restaurants, where one can hire a boat for the day.
The nearest beach is 25 minutes away, just next to Sotogrande. If you prefer to windsurf or kite surf in one of the world’s top spots, the trendy historic village of Tarifa and its spectacular beach is just about an hour away. Just west of it, is the beautiful Bolonia beach with its huge sand dunes, beach restaurants, Roman ruins and museum all located right on the beach. Heading east towards the Costa del Sol, you find the beaches of Estepona within 45 minutes, and Marbella, 60 minutes. There are many other lesser known, but nevertheless great beaches within easy reach, such as Getares or Duquesa.

What Our Guests say 500 + Reviews

Summary: We loved everything about our stay. The house is fantastic and the town full of life and character. Our visit coincided with the annual Feria - party until 6 a.m. on tap if required! If you are interested in recent Spanish history we would highly recommend a visit to the 'Casa de la Memoria la Sauceda'. Incredible local colour about the Spanish civil war and beyond. There is an English tour available from Debbie who volunteers there. Angel and Jenny couldn't have been more obliging in helping us with travel advice, a couple of restaurant bookings and the lay of the land. We have never had a welcome beer with our hosts at any rental we have made previously. A tour of the town and a lift back from the supermarket made our arrival stress free. They even gave us recommendations on trendy nightlife in Madrid (the second part of our holiday) that allowed our two twenty-something girls to have a great night out (without their parents). As stated in other reviews - there is no air-conditioning. However, following Angel's advice, we didn't struggle with the heat. The house has plenty of cool spots whatever time of the day. Thank you Angel and Jenny.

Summary: We are an extended family group who loved our week in this amazing villa. Communications pre arrival were fantastic. Angel gave us a tour of the house on WhatsApp and helped us to decide which rooms everyone wanted. He offered to help with car hire and made sure we were all organised. On arrival, Angel had some cold beers ready and met us at the house. He showed us round the house and the town and made us a dinner reservation, as well as giving us recommendations for where to eat the rest of the week, which were all spot on. The house is amazing. So much space for our group to spread out. There was so much living space that we didn’t use it all! We spent our days in/by the pool. We enjoyed the mix of sun and shade that it offered by being partly under the house. Loads of bedrooms and all but one of them were en suite, there was a bathroom not far from the one which wasn’t so everyone was happy. The only minor issue (for us, it wouldn’t affect everybody) was that there isn’t really air conditioning despite what the description says. That said, the house was cool and can be kept that way by following Angel’s guidance. As Scottish people unused to the heat we would have benefitted from aircon in the bedrooms. I realise it’s very expensive and not environmentally friendly. The town itself is charming with beautiful narrow (steep!) streets. The castle is worth a visit and we loved relaxing with tapas and drinks in the square. Loved our stay and hope to return.

Summary: We had a fantastic time at angel and Jenny’s house in Jimenez de la frontera. Angel let us drop our bags off early and took us to a nearby restaurant while he finished cleaning. Nothing was too much trouble, he drove us around the village advising us where to go. The house had so much space and had everything we needed. The teenagers loved having that much space and the pool and the views were amazing. The village had everything we needed , bars , restaurants, chemist , another pool . We hired a car too and travelled to some lovely towns / places nearby. If you want a truly Spanish experience we would highly recommend this place.

Summary: This lovingly improved family residence has plenty of space for your party to relax with stunning views of the national park. The house is a short walk from castle and the centre of the town and well situated great for exploring the national park. The teenagers enjoyed the home cinema and the pool particularly. The host was extremely helpful and easy to contact if needed, offering lots of guidance and suggestions about the town and places of interest in the region.

Summary: This wonderful house (and Jimena in general) was absolutely perfect. A beautiful house, set in an unspoilt traditional Andalusian town couldn't have been more perfect for our two week holiday. We were 2 families with older children. Everyone had their own bedroom and en-suit showers/toilet with plenty of room throughout this wonderful house which included a cinema room in the basement and a grand piano upstairs The Owner Angel was always just a text away if we needed help and suggested some tasty local restaurants to satisfy our slightly non-standard diets (Vegans/Vegetarians and meat eaters!) from the house the beach was about 25ms away (Sotogrande) with Tarifa, Tangier and Ronda all within easy reach for day trips. A memorable and relaxing stay. Thank you!

Summary: Two weeks in this lovely home in Jimena de la Frontera has caused me great distress. I have returned home to grey, damp northern England - when the skies in Jimena were stubbornly blue. My house feels rather small and squalid compared to the airy spaciousness of our temporary home in Jimena. The food back here is somehow tasteless, the people a little impoverished. Is this clinical depression? I guess not - but after staying in this quite remarkable family home, things may be a little bleak for some time! The online description of the property doesn’t do it justice really. It’s large and very well equipped, wonderfully located in a beautiful village with access to mountains, sea and culture. The direct communication between its owners has been lovely, making it a faultless stay. Of course - we’ll be back.

Summary: We have had an amazing two weeks staying here. The villa, the views and the village were all wonderful. Lots to see and do in the area and the most beautiful food on your doorstep. Angel and his family couldn't have been more helpful with advice on place to visit and with any problems we had. We were there in the middle of a heat wave so some nights were very hot without air conditioning. We highly recommend having a holiday here.

Summary: This townhouse in Jimena oozes of personal touch and care taken to ensure that the house has everything you need for a quiet vacation. The pool is perfect for relaxing, with plenty of room around it for sun bathing or enjoying the shade of the lemon trees (which are also perfect for the gin tonics...) Bedrooms are spacious, with good beds and plenty of room for clothes as well. Although there is no air conditioning installed, the natural air condition of opening windows and ensuring air circulation works pefect, even in 35 degrees. The balcony is the perfect place for a morning coffee, afternoon and evening drinks, offering amazing views of the surrounding countryside. Jimena as a place is a village, nothing much happens, there are some excellent restaurants (La Tasca and El Vinterello), with charm, good food and excellent service. A walk down the hill to the local river for a nice stroll and excellent bathing conditions is also something you should do. The beaches as Sotogrande is a quick 30 min drive away, and JImena is a good location for other day trips to say Gibraltar, Ronda, Cadiz and Sevilla. Jenny and Angel are amazing hosts, from the initial booking, to video-showing us the house, to keep us updated on what we should do, what trips to take, where to eat and where to drive and park :) When we arrived Angel took the time to come back the next day to take us for a drive in the area to ensure we knew everything, a perfect start to the holiday. In addition., Angel and Jenny were always available on Whatsapp for information when we needed. Fantastic place and fantastic people!

Summary: We are a family of six, ages ranging from 26 to 72, and the location and spaciousness of this house was just perfect. It was an easy journey to the kite surfing beaches of Tarifa; a wonderful and easy train ride to Ronda; lots of great bars and restaurants within a very short stroll; and wonderful walks through the narrow streets up to the castle and down along the river. The house offers privacy both inside and out, with different areas in which to spend quiet time, but the huge well-equipped kitchen and spacious balcony seating area (with fantastic views) provided the perfect location for family together time. It worked out wonderfully well, with excellent communication and information from the owners. Thank you.

Summary: We spent a fantastic week as a family of 8 in this lovely house. There was plenty of space with 6 bedrooms and ample indoor and outdoor living space. The house was clean and extremely well equipped with all the facilities we needed and more! The large cinema room and pool were a great hit and the kitchen / living area accommodated us all with ease. The views from the rear balcony are simply breathtaking. The owners, Jenny & Angel gave us a lot of very useful information on the area and advice on local restaurants before we went - we particularly enjoyed the local tapas bars, El Ventorrillero & La Estacion restaurants. The town of Jimena is a traditional Andalusian white village with an imposing hilltop castle beautifully lit at night. There is a small supermarket and bakery just 100m from the house and a large municipal swimming pool at 10 minute walk. We took day trips to Ronda, Sotogrande, Gibraltar & Tarifa - all recommended. We also enjoyed a couple of afternoons relaxing & swimming in the Rio Hozgarganta just a 15 minute walk along a guided path from the house. We would highly recommend this house for a relaxing, truly Spanish experience in the sun !
