Positive: Managed to book a room including breakfast for AUD103 per night, for 2 nights. As a solo traveller, this was really worth the money as the hotel had an amazing onsen - two outdoor ones, an indoor one and a sauna. The breakfast was delicious, with them changing the menu if you stay the second day as well. It's traditional Japanese breakfast, with fish, sashimi, pickles, egg and dessert. They even heat up the clam miso soup using the portable fire at your table when you arrive. The room has air conditioning and a mini fridge.
Negative: Slightly older hotel, but no issues at all as it's very well maintained.
Summary: Amazing Great Value Onsen Experience

Positive: This is an attractive hotel, with a picturesque foyer. It is an easy walk from the train station.
Negative: The hotel's public bath was just below my room and the noise from people talking was very noticeable; in addition, voices in the corridor were also very audible. In short, sound insulation was not good. Breakfast was a set menu of largely Japanese offerings, which is okay if you like Japanese breakfasts. (Not for me, I must admit.)
Summary: Well located

Positive: The onsen was awesome! They had 4-5 different onsen to relax your body. The hotel stuffs were very kind. They offered their help to carry our heavy suitcases.
Negative: The hotel was simply very old and cleaning was not enough. I guess our room was used to be a smoking allowed room, and the wall was yellow and slightly smelly. The 'haori' which hanged in the room to wear over yukata were very badly smelly and had some stains. I guess it must be changed / washed whenever new guest checks in. Although we requested to stay in the quiet room, but we could hear our neighbors snoring. :(
Summary: Onsen was great!

Positive: Hamanoyu feels like an old grand dame from another era. The staff do their best to keep up the quality and they do a good job. My room was small and cute. The sauna and hot spring facilities were well-maintained and felt comfortable and relaxing. I only got breakfast, but it was more than adequate. I feel that not enough. People are visiting that part of Nagano these days, and that tourism is suffering, which is ironic because much of the rest of Japan appears to be booming. I hope, I can do my small part to help get the word out.
Negative: It felt like it needed to be aired out a little bit in the hallways and such. It’s a massive property so I know it’s not easy to keep air flowing, especially in the depths of winter.
Summary: The perfect location with high cost performance
