4 Bedroom House in Clarksville

Built in 1845, this historical gem is a destination itself. Be aware of the walkthrough bedrooms in the back. Hezekiah Elgin's home has the honor of being one of the oldest houses on record in the city of Clarksville and one of the few remaining houses on the river front. Mr. Elgin came to Clarksville in the early 1800's. He opened a trading post and built one of the first roads between St. Louis and Clarksville. He also bought the Elgin Opera House and Hotel which were both destroyed by fire in the late 1800's. In 1860 Mr. Elgin married a wealthy widow with 2 children. He added on to the original "federal style" home and created an "Italianate" portion of the home. There is a grand entrance with a beautiful original curved staircase and a formal sitting room with a marble fireplace he personally brought by boat from Italy! He created the grand master suite we now call "The wedding room" which has the most breathtaking views of the Mississippi. There is another original fireplace in the kitchen which is Cypress Wood and Brick. The bricks to the home were handmade on the property by the slaves who once lived there. The style of the house was greatly influenced by the French-styled houses in the French Quarter of New Orleans. The ceilings soar to 12 feet and the windows are all 9 feet tall. Some of the windows were originally designed to open up into the ceiling to double as a walkthrough door to the balcony. The house has eight main rooms that run shotgun style, each opening to a side porch overlooking the river. This home has been featured on PBS twice with former owner Richard Cottrell, who restored the home, gave detailed tours. The Elgin-Cottrell River Mansion was also featured with an 11 page spread in Victorian Homes Magazine in 2011. Since this house has had only 4 previous owners, it hasn't seen many changes and the floor plan remains the same. Victorian Homes Magazine said it is by far one of the most historically correct beautifully decorated Victorian Homes in the US.

Summary: Our family was in Clarksville for the Thanksgiving holiday. Some of us stayed at this historical house. We were amazed at the beautiful interior - from the wall paper and chandeliers to the grand furnishings. The view of the Mississippi River was spectacular and we were able to watch the barge traffic. We had everything we needed. The kitchen was well equipped. The whole house was clean and tidy. Thank you for a memorable stay for our family. And we all loved the trains!

Summary: We loved our stay at the Elgin-Cottrell River Mansion! This huge house was rich with historical details and decor. We almost felt we were transported to a different time. The beds were comfortable. The local soap/lotion was amazing! It was surprisingly quiet, even for being so close to the train tracks. The natural light in the house is gorgeous, but I would bring a sleeping mask if you are a late riser. Our host, Mike, was so kind and incredibly responsive! We look forward to returning!

Summary: I really enjoyed my time at the property. Lots of barge and train activity to watch. Clarksville is small, but getting to a larger town is relatively easy. I like to cook when I am on vacation and the owner really set up the kitchen nicely for guests. Definitely not often you get to stay in a house with the history this one has!

Summary: The host Michael was extremely hospitable, friendly and communicative. He even offered a little flexibility on the check-in time, which was much appreciated! Very quick answers to questions--an excellent host! We were in town for a wedding, and this home worked well for 7 family members to stay together, and was convenient to the venue (Overlook Farm) Some notes about the house... The furnishings were very nice and gave the home a warm and stately ambience. --We didn't really use the kitchen, but it was great to have a washer and dryer, as we had been traveling prior to arrival. --Although the home was listed with 2 bathrooms, it really has 1-1/2. There is a powder room (half bath) downstairs and a full bath upstairs. --The layout of the 4 bedrooms was a bit unusual, in that 2 of the bedrooms were only reachable by walking through other bedrooms (3 of the bedrooms were connected in a row, one then the next and then the next). It was not particularly a problem for us, but it was unexpected. --The house is very near the train tracks, and the train was loud when it passed, including early in the morning,
