As best we know this old house started off sometime around 1840 as a tiny one room dwelling with a small attic loft like space - perhaps for sleeping. Now the dining area.
Then a one room-over-one room house was constructed - later 1800’s - where the current first floor bedroom and upstairs dressing room/shared bath. Odds and ends were connected up over the years - and now there’s a bright waterside kitchen and sitting area - a living room - and two more upstairs bedrooms.
There are two waterside decks and a screened porch. A covered front porch w cozy rocking chairs. All in all - full of charm and whimsy!
The house is very private - 5+ acres w clearings/woods and 500’ of waterfront. All rooms have water views. Swimming and water activities right off the pier!
Surrounded by nature - you’ll see ospreys, blue herons, egrets and an occasional bald eagle. You can crab off the dock - we’ll have pots for you. And for the adventuresome - fresh Tidewater oysters floating in baskets too!

Summary: Our group was myself and my husband along with my parents and our 3 and 6 year old sons. This is a beautiful older home with a lot of charm. Dorothy and Charles are excellent hosts and went the extra mile to make sure we were comfortable. The house is clean and had everything we needed. The private dock and kayaks are a really fun feature that we enjoyed as well. The entire area of Mathews county is beautiful, but it was a little difficult to want to leave the house because it was so relaxing there. We all enjoyed seeing the fiddler crabs and watching the fish jump in the bay.

Summary: We met my aunt and uncle from MT here as they had never been to the bay area. Beautiful and peaceful place. Dorothy & Charles made it so welcoming and were always available for questions. Wonderful sitting out on the dock or playing cards out on the screened porch in the evening.

Summary: We had a wonderful friend's getaway for the 4th of July holiday. From the beginning Dorothy's care and courtesy in communication was a good sign of how our stay would go: her answers to our questions were as thoughtful and thorough as any you'd give a friend. Upon our arrival there was a binder with detailed information about the house/area, festive bunting up on the porch, and a welcome basket of snacks and wine! The house itself is beautiful and well-equipped with anything you could need: kayaks, floats, kitchen accessories, servingware, extra bedding, etc. We appreciated the well-stocked water cooler of drinking water for those who can't tolerate that bayside aroma. The internet was strong enough for 3 adults to work remote at once, video calls and all. The real highlight of Dorothy's home was the nature: we lounged on the comfortable screened porch most of every day and night. There you can feel a constant and pleasant breeze off the water and watch the popular hummingbird feeder. (We were seeing one every 30 minutes!) There are frequently herons wading about and an osprey nest right across the water. Dorothy provided binoculars and birding books for the nature-minded. We loved walking down the dock and watching the army of tiny crabs scuttle away. Crabbing was decent: we caught a few in the cages but not enough for all of us, so they were freed. To find some shade on the water we ended up sitting on tubes with our books and floating underneath the dock – I recommend it! (Don't forget to tie yourself up, though) Kayaking was great fun. There were tons of fish in the water and you'd regularly see/hear them jump up. All in all Dorothy is a fantastic host with a beautiful home on the perfect slice of the Chesapeake. We all left rejuvenated and happy. I hope to return!

Summary: We had to book the house quickly for a family funeral. Rushing to have a place to stay, driving from Indiana to Virginia and making other arrangements my mind was racing! Dorothy was amazing, she showed us so much kindness. Allowing us to check in early helped so much. She even went shopping to make sure I didn't have to worry about dinner the night we arrived and breakfast the morning of the funeral. What a special person, I only wish we could have met for coffee. The house is beautiful, comfy and cozy. It gave us a place to relax and unwind. I loved sitting on the screened porch with my coffee in the morning and just breath. I would love to stay another time in the summer to enjoy the outdoors. It's just a beautiful house and setting. I can't say enough about it.

Summary: The property is gem. The bay is teeming with wildlife including eagles, cranes, turtles and crabs. The swimming and kayaking were excellent. The property and house are large and spacious with all the supplies you need. Overall, it is a stunning setting.

Summary: This old property was one of the best , if not the best, that my wife and I have ever rented. All the modern amenities inside the cottage were excellent, the kitchen was complete with everything down to the last detail, the screened in porch was the perfect place for morning tea and breakfast after a restful and quiet night in the comfortable bed upstairs.The view from the kitchen window and the outside deck was incredible stretching way out across the water. We would sit on the deck each evening and watch as the sun set providing a magnificent, ever changing, colorful display.Such a peaceful place, where the only sound was from the birds, the cawing of the crows and the hoarse croak of the blue heron. And the oysters harvested right off the dock were a real bonus!We had a most enjoyable, relaxing time and would love to return some day. Thank you so much.

Summary: This property was the perfect get away for us. The house and location are even better than the pictures and the host made sure we had everything we needed. The extra thoughtfulness of our hosts to make sure our young kids had high chairs and having kids toys and dress up clothes available at the house really was above and beyond our expectations.
