Positive: A charming hotel with bags of history, located on the edge of the town centre, beside the River Traun. The place oozes character, with a complicated arrangement of different parts. It has several traditional, cosy stubles for drinks or dining (which would be ideal during a winter stay but weren’t really used in the Summer), a “villa” on the river front with a lovely outdoor dining area, a pleasant breakfast room with a semi-outdoor conservatory courtyard and, in surprising contrast, a very contemporary-styled “wellness” spa facility with all manner of pools, saunas, fitness and massage areas. Our ground floor room, in the “villa”, on the riverside, had obviously been fairly recently refitted and redecorated and was simply but comfortably furnished and had adequate space, including a small outdoor sitting terrace. The staff were friendly and helpful, particularly the young staff running the evening restaurant overlooking the river. The hotel is really well located, in a prominent position, on the edge of the town centre and within 10 minutes walk of the railway and bus station and most sights and amenities.
Negative: Being a very old, historic building, or in fact a collection of buildings, it’s quite quirky and in fact is split into two parts divided by a narrow roadway. When booking, you do really need to be very precise about the type of room you want and in which part of the hotel you want to be. Our room, being on the ground floor, beside the river, was quite dark because of the balcony above and the trees and shrubbery screening the terrace from the well-used riverside footpath, which passed immediately outside, and the main town bridge, a few metres away. Because of the lack of privacy or view, we didn’t feel inclined to sit on the terrace. Rooms on higher floors had better views but might have suffered a similar lack of privacy. I guess that some rooms in the main part of the hotel will have great views but others, at the rear, might have a less attractive outlook, as the hotel backs onto a fairly busy road. Note that, as is the case with many hotels in Continental Europe, smoking is permitted on bedroom balconies and in outdoor dining areas, so that might be a factor to consider if you are particularly sensitive to cigarette smoke. Whilst, overall, the breakfast was very plentiful and good quality, the selection of hot food was rather limited. The restaurant was open to non-residents and served a delicious but very traditional, regional menu, which might not appeal to those looking for light, contemporary dishes!
Summary: A historic, tradional and full of character hotel with a great spa facility, in a very attractive and convenient locatio

Positive: We enjoyed our stay, especially the opportunity to store our bicycles in the easily-accessible garage.
Negative: The unavoidable roof repair work was less ideal.
Summary: It was fun: train travel, walking, biking, enjoying trees, birds, fresh air, river, mountains.
