Positive: Great location right on the main street of the old town, a small very quiet Ryokan with historic feel. The Nakasendo trail is outside the front door. The village of Narai is great for photography and walking.

Negative: The town closes down very early as does the Ryokan, the dining offering is simple and limited, our dinner on the first night was uninspiring. If staying in the town make sure to pack some snacks as there is nothing open after early evening.

Summary: Narai is a unique place to stay, the Ryokan allows you to get a feel for the town.

Positive: Loved how modern yet traditional this place was. Food was excellent and I was very happy with the vegetarian alternatives that were made for me and also how kindly the chef accommodated our 2 year old son. It was beautiful to be some of the first and last people in the small town and get to enjoy the quiet streets almost by ourselves.

Positive: Wow what a spot - felt lucky to be staying in such an historic town / building. It must be incredible to stay here in the mountains during warm weather! Kitchen was very accommodating with my allergies to seafood. Much appreciated

Negative: Due to the cold weather outside the reception and dining area was a bit chilly although they had nice heaters placed near the tables

Summary: well worth staying in such a historic spot - great staff

Positive: A young and kind staff with good intentions. The place is beautiful and features antique items alongside modern design. The collection of block print paintings is impressive. The linens are beautiful! The location, in the middle of the street, was pleasant for us.

Negative: There is no soundproofing between the room we stayed in and the room above it. It truly sounds as if people are walking on the room's ceiling. This was terrible at night; every time someone in the room above moved, we woke up, and again in the morning while we were getting ready to leave. The dinner was a light meal. Not as satisfying as meals in other places. The sleeping pillows were small and hard. When filling the bathtub, the bathroom floor gets wet, and there was no extra towel to put on the floor. There is no nearby parking, so it's advisable to prepare a small bag in advance

Positive: The rooms and facilities, also breakfast and dinner were excellent! Location of course is perfect, although there is zero life (everything closed) after 18:00 on the main street of Narai.

Negative: Matter of taste of course - although the hotel plays a bit "western card" (food, sticks vs cutlery, design) I still would have liked pure Japanese concept. For the things I expect to be there Europe I´d travel to Europe :-)

Positive: This was the best place we stayed in Japan. The King suite was the most beautiful space I’ve ever seen and the bed felt like sleeping on a cloud. The hosts were exceptional - they went above and beyond to help us and made everything feel special. it is perfectly located in the gorgeous Main Street. Love love loved everything. Thank you ♥️

Negative: there was nothing not to love, everything was exceptional.
