TUSCANY: within 100km / 60m
AREZZO (30mins) Our Provincial capital and a charming medieval centre with a lovely cathedral and many antique shops. The Legend of the True Cross frescos, masterpiece of Piero della Francesca are in the Basilica of San Francesco. Arezzo was also the birthplace of painter, architect and biographer Giorgio Vasari who gave his name to the elegant portico on Arezzo’s Piazza Grande.
MONTEPULCIANO (30mins) One of the best-preserved hill towns of Italy. Wine & Cooking of this town are well known all over the world. Much to see. Great visit. Taste the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano.
PIENZA (45mins) Overlooks the Val D’Orcia. It was the birthplace of Pope Pius II Piccolomini who endeavoured to create an “ideal city” of the tiny town of Corsignano. There are many fine buildings and breath-taking views. The English Patient was filmed here. Pienza features fun boutiques and several shops selling the typical Pecorino cheese.
MONTALCINO (1hr) A Medieval settlement in enchanting natural landscape. Montalcino is all about the famous Brunello di Montalcino wine which can be sampled in the numerous wine bars or nearby wineries. The fortress has a wine shop too and magnificent views from its ramparts
SIENA (45mins) Exquisite Gothic walled city – perfectly preserved since it was never damaged in the 2WW. Small, manageable and pedestrian; pop.50,000. Duomo: see cathedral-library frescoes by Pinturicchio. Campo Square is the place to have coffee and people watch and imagine the Palio race taking place. Enoteca - located in the restored Medici Fortezza; stocks 1000 different wines. You can taste or buy at reasonable prices. Parking in Siena: the best place for 95% occasions is the Fortezza or Stadio - there is nearly always a space. There is also parking San Francesco with escalators into town. It is not easy to find free street parking. Beware of illegal parking.
FLORENCE (1hr 15 minutes) Capital city of the Region of Tuscany and jewel of the Italian Renaissance. We strongly suggest booking the major museums in advance. Going by train saves the problem of parking and is far less stressful and tiring in our opinion. You can park at one of the Cortona train stations and come back in the evening.
UMBRIA: within 100km / 60m
CASTIGLIONE DEL LAGO (25mins) The town of Castiglione del Lago is a large balcony overlooking Lake Trasimeno. It retains a beautiful historic centre within 12th-century medieval walls. From its Rocca, the view captures the entire lake with its islands, the surrounding hills and the profile of the towns that dominate the landscape, from Cortona to Panicale. From Castiglione del Lago there is a cycle-pedestrian path that enables visitors to circumnavigate Lake Trasimeno, some sixty kilometres long.
LAKE TRASIMENO (15mins) Fourth largest lake in Italy. Great day out, with or without children. Pretty towns all around with cafes, beaches, boating, trips to the islands. PASSIGNANO SUL TRASIMENO (20mins) is a charming lakeside town – the spot for Sunday ‘passeggiata’ or to rent a boat - and features several good restaurants specialising in both lake and sea fish.
PERUGIA (45mins) Significant traces of the city’s Etruscan past are visible and there are a number of important historical places to visit. Corso Vanucci offers magnificent stores and historical buildings & the Pinacoteca, Umbrian National art gallery. By car it is best to park at the bottom of the city in the Piazza Partigiani parking garage and go up the moving staircase to the Centre – emerging from inside the old “Rocca Paolina” Fortress. Central Perugia itself is largely impossible to park in.
ASSISI (45mins) Umbria’s best-known city and home to Saint Francis of Assisi & Saint Claire. One of the highest expressions of religious vitality of the region is to be found in the Basilica of San Francesco, which houses the body of the saint and contains a variety of priceless frescoes (Giotto, Cimabue, Lorenzetti, etc.). Pay car parks located all around the walls.
GUBBIO (1hr) High and off the beaten track, it has the most medieval appearance of the Umbrian towns. Well preserved buildings in pink limestone; spectacular countryside all around. Experience the views from the funicular to S.Ubaldo from which you can walk into the hills behind or down into the centre. To get there take the scenic drive via the hamlet of Mercatale and the Umbrian town of Umbertide.
ORVIETO (1hr) take the A1 south to get there. Ancient Etruscan hill town high up on a tufa rock plateau; superb Gothic cathedral & square, it is one of the oldest towns in Italy, famous for its white wines with lots of enjoyable narrow streets to explore, underground Etruscan ‘Ipogei’ or underground tombs. Return via the scenic route stopping at TODI (1hr) ancient hill town and perhaps DERUTA (1hr) for its world famous, prized, colourful majolica pottery.
TORGIANO (1hr) is small but is host to two marvellous museums: - the Museo del Vino and the Museo dell'Olio. Both are the private collections of the Lungarotti winemaking family, who are responsible for having put Umbrian wine on the map. Wine tasting is possible next door to the wine museum!
SPELLO (1hr) This ancient Roman spa town still features its Roman gates and is home to some splendid works by Pinturicchio (student of Perugino) in the Collegiata of Santa Maria Maggiore. Every year at Pentecost there is the ‘Spello in Fiore’ competition in town for the most beautiful display of flowers along the narrow streets, windows and balconies making this a charming spot to stop and wander.

Summary: Six siblings decided to visit Italy, we picked a place that could accommodate all of us and Il Molino di Bordone fit the bill to a tee! Each couple had their own room & bathroom, but we still had plenty of spaces to gather as a group. It was a wonderful experience that would be highly recommended to anyone. Beautiful place! Thank you

Summary: Our week at Molino di Bordone was everything we had imagined and more. Our party included four children (11, 5, 4, and 2 years old) and they all had a blast playing in the pool, on the swings and trampoline, and with the friendly family dogs. Caroline and Pino are extraordinarily gracious hosts--procuring some local wine for us on our first evening, arranging a vineyard tour, and answering all sorts of questions. Ask for Miriam to come and cook for your family--our children enjoyed helping her cook two outstanding homestyle meals of pasta, pork, tiramisu, etc. And we highly recommend a driving tour with Pino. We spent the day travelling to vineyards, ancient villages, towns, and castles we never would have found on our own, and Siena. The villa is in a perfect location, hidden among rolling hills and the countryside of Cortona. During our week we did side trips to Florence, Arezzo, Assisi, and Lake Trasimeno. If we lived closer, we'd be regulars. Thank you, Caroline and Pino!

Summary: If you have a young family and want to get away from it al and not have to worry about your children every few minutes then this really is the place for you. Our family of four - two young children - completely fell in love with this charming retreat and the surrounding area and found Caroline and Pino (the owners) not only very helpful but so friendly and welcoming. Would very much recommend this to anyone looking to put their feet up although Siena and many more attractions are a mere short trip away so if you can tear yourself away from the loverly countryside then make the trip. My advice is go on make the booking - you wont be disappointed.

Summary: We had an extended family gathering if 16 in this beautiful setting. The 7 groups within this fitted easily and comfortably into the 4 units of the Molino with all cooking and eating outside at La Fontanella. Excellent space for both privacy and all the communal activities. Regular raids on the herb garden and much activity at the swimming pool as well as visits to Cortona, Florence, Sienna, Assisi and several mountain villages. Special mention of the several international football matches -- Europe v USA -- enthusiastically joined by the Nobile children. Easy shopping and good walking and eating places. Wall to wall sunshine was expected, but the kindness and helpfulness of the Nobile family was a massive bonus. Most enthusiastically and unconditionally recommended. Buonissimo!

Summary: This was my 2nd year visiting Il Molino di Bordone. I fell in love with the setting and villa in 2007 so I decided it would be the perfect venue for my extended family to visit. All 14 members of my family drove up to the villa at 9pm on a hot balmy Tuscan night. We were greeted by the warm and friendly Caroline and Pino with drinks and canapes on the terrace. Immediately everyone was taken by the beautiful setting, the surrounding hills, the stunning architecture and the warm smiles of our hosts. We hired the entire complex for two weeks which afforded the perfect level of privacy for each family group but also provided many facilities for the entire group to enjoy. The latest accommodation the Fontanella is world class. It is a little (actually quite large!) luxury boutique hotel in the Tuscan hills. Each day we met for breakfast on the terrace before lounging later by the beautiful pool. Each night was a fun filled adventure with BBQ's in the garden, kids playing on the trampoline, walking through the extensive sun-flower fields, feeding the donkey or splashing in the pool. One of the highlights of our holiday was the evening Luca the chef came to visit for our cookery course. We had three fabulous hours making our own pasta, watching Luca at work. Finally at 8.30pm we sat down to dinner on the beautiful outdoor terrace where Luca served the entire family. This is an evening not to miss. The villas are beautiful with every facility you could require or ever imagine. The setting is spectacular! Caroline and Pino are warm, welcoming and fantastic at offering good advice. The location is perfect for touring beautiful Tuscany. The surrounding towns are picture postcard. Don't miss Cortona, Pienza or Montalcino. On our last evening we were lucky enough to watch the Bolshoi Ballet perform in the Main Square of Cortona as we ate dinner in a local restaurant. A night we will never forget. This is the perfect location for any size group. All 14 of my family left Tuscany with a sad heart. We had an amazing holiday which was due largely to the fabulous company but also to the perfect setting and hosts. We will all definitely return to a place which has a special place in our hearts."
