2 Bedroom Cottage in Uglas

Maison Margalide lies in a pretty and tranquil valley close to the river Gers. It still retains many of the features typical of the Pyrenean farms of the 19th century.
Lannemezan is the local market town, only five minutes by car and is the main supply town for the numerous villages scattered around the foot of the mountains. There are several supermarkets, bread shops, restaurants, bars, banks and a market, which is held every Wednesday as well regular festivals during the summer period.
The secret region known as the Barronnies lies only ten minutes from the house; a beautiful unspoilt area that still retains its old traditional methods of farming. There are plenty of walks and magnificent views as well as restaurants and bars; an astonishing place to spend a day or two of your holiday. The benefits of staying at Margalide is its location. The Valley D’ Aure towards St Lary has some wonderful walks all listed in our guide book. St Lary is one of the main winter ski resorts in the Pyrenees and in summer all extreme sports can be booked from here such as parapenting and canyoning. Before arriving at St Lary, one passes the pretty town of Arreau, which is listed as one of Frances beautiful villages. From here one can explore the big Tour de France mountains Aspin and Tourmelet and Peragudes into the town of Luchon. There is also easy access to all the major routes via the motorway or national roads to places such as Pau, Biarritz, San Sebastian to the West and Carcassone, Toulouse and Sete to the East. We also recommend a trip into Spain to the Ordessa National park and the medieval town of Ainsa for example.
Margalide is an excellent base to explore the central Pyrenees and we have a very useful guide book which includes many of our favourite walks in the high mountains and foothills, at any time of year. I think the benefit of staying at Marglide is its location close to the motorway and all the valley routes. Not stuck in on remote village. A bussling local town giving you a chance to get a taste of the whole region in one holiday.

Summary: In a pretty and quiet corner of France but within easy driving distance of many landmarks in the French Pyrenees. It was a well-equipped, comfortable and spacious place to stay with a friendly boulangerie 5 mins drive away for croissants and baguettes for breakfast. We stayed only four nights but it wasn’t long enough.

Summary: Wonderful old farmhouse which is what we like to stay in when traveling. While the rental is old, it's clean and well equipped and everything works. We did day trip tours all over the Pyrenees mountain range and northern Spain. The trip's to Spain required overnight stay in Bilbao or Pamplona. Ros and Tom were great Hosts. Made our stay at the Farmhouse very comfortable.

Summary: A very pleasant accommodation in an absolutely quiet location, friendly and charming hosts, a beautiful region - all prerequisites for a relaxing stay are given. It is not (too) far to the Baronnies, the Pyrenean passes or to the Cirque de Gavarnie. It was a week that I will remember with pleasure. So will Daikey ... my dog ... thanks to Douglas ....

Summary: Given the pandemic, we had decided to stay in France for this summer. The Hautes-Pyrénées montains was a great choice. The house we have rent in Uglas was amazing for the kids and all the familly. Very quiet and confortable. The region is so great for hiking and fly fishing, with so many interesting spots to visit. Altghough the weather was not very cooperative on some days, we visited the Gouffre d'Esparros and the Grote du Medous à Saint- Pét-de-Bigorrs and the kids enjoyed that very much. We recommend also the restaurant L’Arbison in Arrau. Delicious and suprinsingly cheap. We can't wait to visit again this nice region of France. Thanks you to our hosts Ros and Tom!

Summary: The cottage is exactly as portrayed by the pictures, with the added benefit for us of a bigger private garden and a very tranquil setting. The background of gently running water is very soothing. Ros and Tom are excellent hosts. They are friendly, helpful and informative without being in any way intrusive. The village of Uglas does not have any amenities but everything you need is available in nearby Lannemezan. The cottage provides a quiet retreat after travelling or sightseeing. There are walks or villages nearby for more restful days. The area is beautiful and we would certainly love to return.

Summary: We spent 6 hot and sunny days in Uglas which were very relaxing and peaceful. There is plenty of information in the gite about places to visit and walks to do. The availability of wi-fi also helped to search for places to visit As mentioned previously the gite is in an excellent location for all sorts of things – walking, cycling, exploring the various villages, towns or even cities doted around the area and for us being on a motorbike, great traffic free roads and of course the winding, spectacular roads into the Pyrenees. The patio area out back is a sun trap, great for relaxing with a beer after a day exploring. Many thanks Ros and Tom for being great hosts, it was good to meet you.

Summary: Cannot fault the location of this lovely rustic cottage with some quirky features. This is the perfect place to relax but is close to amenities if you want them. Wished we could have stayed longer, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves as did our dog who quickly made friends with the owners dog Douglas. Although Tom and Ros live onsite and are available if you need anything, we hardly saw them, they had the perfect blend of giving you privacy but were there when wanted. We were slightly apprehensive about this due to a previous rental we had stayed in, however we needn't have been worried at all. We would definitely love to stay here again. There was plenty of information nicely put together about places to visit. Plenty of DVDs and books. There aren't any UK TV channels available, however this wasn't a problem for us as the internet was sufficient to run our Netflix account. As we live most of the year in a bustling environment this was our perfect escape. A big thank you to Tom and Ros for creating this.

Summary: In a lovely setting, away from it all with just a babbling stream and nearby river as the only noise pollution you are likely to hear this is a perfect place to get away from it all. Tom and Rosalind were great hosts: always on hand to provide valuable insights into the area as well as making sure everything was ok. The Gite is not too far away from some spectacular scenery and great walks but be prepared to get in your car to see it. If you’re a cyclist the start of Col d’aspin was 15 miles away to give you an idea. We did go to the local boulangerie on our bikes which was around 3 miles away and made for a pleasant start to the day. If you like being in the middle of nowhere albeit with a few other houses and farms around you then you won’t be disappointed if you are hoping to walk into the local village for a coffe then this wouldn’t suit. A great place to just unwind and enjoy the peace.

Summary: We very much enjoyed our 6 night stay in Uglas. It was quiet and unrushed, a pleasant break after battling traffic in some of the larger towns in France. The close proximity to the Pyrenees and the Barronies area makes this an ideal base for exploring the region. The owners have extensive information, particularly about walking trails in the area. The house was easy to find with the gps coordinates provided. There is a large supermarket in nearby Lannemezan so stock up before you arrive and enjoy the peace once you get there. Although there was just the two of us we enjoyed the space in this 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom cottage. The kitchen facilities were great: oven, microwave and coffee maker. Outdoor seating was also provided on a private deck at the back. The resident dogs were lots of fun. The owners were very friendly and welcoming. We very much enjoyed our stay.

Summary: Whilst the weather was not all we had hoped for, the warmth of the hosts made up for the lack of blue skies. Lots to do and see in the area, with of course plenty of incredible walks. Would highly recommend.
