Positive: The Mountain Home structure was 1st built in the early 1800s. The Innkeepers, Scott and Lisa, have devoted 13 years to painstakingly restore this pre-Civil War National Heritage site a few miles from Front Royal, paying exquisite attention to period details, with modern comforts. Sleeping in a 200 year old bedroom in a building that survived the civil war added depth and a felt need to learn more about local history. Beyond historical awe, breakfast was wonderful - all local fare - from fruits to jams.
Negative: Absolutely nothing.
Summary: No ordinary B&B, where rural Virginia, creature comforts, history & Appalachian hiking tales meet!

Positive: It had a good location. The area was verdant and green. Booking the room was very easy. The 19th Century house is beautiful, the room was private, with a locking door, and a private half bath with a shower.
Negative: The first thing that the owner did was complain that I arrived shortly after booking the bed, because the room was not ready, which is not my problem. The app said the room was available, so I booked it. She showed me where the room was and I tried to make chitchat while she finished setting it up but her husband aggressively offered me a drink that I didn't choose and when I reached for it, he pulled it away and made me come to the patio. "We are going to move you to the patio." I did not have a choice of what to drink or where to sit. Neither of them came off as very hospitable. The many, many bugs on the patio was glad we were there, though. The bed wasn't a bed as much as it was a mattress pad on a wooden base. I'm sure it is paradise for people who stumble off the Appalachian trail but for an accommodation twice as expensive as the hotels by the highway, I expect something more. The breakfast was going to be only one of two options. I mean, with the continental breakfast at the cheap hotels I can have several choices. I woke up early so I decided go see the sun rise on Skyline Drive and skip breakfast. I tried to put the cup in the kitchen but the door to the kitchen was locked. She happened to walk out at that point which I was glad of. I told her that I was going to skip breakfast and she remembered that they hadn't run my credit card, which we did right then. I thought it was charged through the website and she said no, so we ran the card, no problem. Still, she texted me the notice that said that I would be paying at the property. That was the rule and she pointed out the rule. Seriously folks, running your business is your business, and it's up to you to remember this stuff.
Summary: A very expensive mattress pad.
