Far From the Madding Crowds, l'Escarelle (squirrel in local patois) is a an ancient farm house snugged at the end of a river valley. This will be your home for a few days, facing the Vercors range cliffs, close to the Trièves plateau, one of the most beautiful areas in the Alps.
There's plenty of space for four couples or two families, four bedrooms, a large living room full of light, open kitchen, thick walls that keep the house cool in summer, a big, modern and efficient stove for burning logs, plus central heating in winter. Two bathrooms.
The house is in the middle of a large, 3600sq-yard landscaped area, cedar trees, pine trees, a tennis table in the shade, great for both children and adults.
The river, a gray-green-colored, transparent mountain stream, is a five-minute walk down the path, with lots of places to wade in, and some deeper spots.
Should you prefer tiled, chlorinated water, there's a public swimming pool 9km away, very calm until 2pm.
