3 Bedroom House in Tiverton

Charming circa 1750 colonial New England farmhouse, with federal period renovations, located at historic Fogland Ferry Farm.
Surrounded by 14 acres of rolling stonewalled pastures overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and East Passage of Narragansett Bay, this property provides the ideal of an idyllic pastoral and coastal vacation getaway within easy access to the cultural and recreational activities available in the cities of Newport, New Bedford, Providence, recently dubbed "the creative city", and Boston. For day trips, the ferry to Block Island offers a convenient departure from neighboring Fall River and both the Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket regular and high speed ferries leave from New Bedford.
On those days spent closer to "home", a short walk down to the shore brings you to Fogland Beach, singled out by the Sakonnet Times newspaper as “ a hidden gem……….” a bathing beach which is ideal for families who wish to swim, picnic, cast a line for blues or stripers, try a hand at crabbing, windsurf or simply enjoy the scenery of this truly special barrier beach and estuary.
The Historic Tiverton Four Corners, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is an easy bike ride, or jaunt on foot, away. Once there, cool off with an award winning cone of ice cream at Gray's, visit one of several art galleries, boutiques and antiques shops, then enjoy a meal selected from the extensive menu offerings at the Grille or choose from tempting deli sandwiches, salads, and acclaimed bakery goods at the Provender.
Visit the Tiverton Historical Society's Chase-Cory House museum, circa 1730, or the Union Public, second oldest library in Newport County, founded in 1820. If you are fortunate enough to be in the area at the time, patronize the library's annual storied "field of books" sale in late summer. Attend summer long events scheduled at the Four Corners Arts Center from the July 4th antiques show and sale, to the Cultural Survival Bazaar, and much more. The area is rich in character, beauty, history and tranquility.
The Fogland Ferry Farm property retains many interesting features of an early coastal farm. The outbuildings include a barn and hayloft with attached carriage shed, as well as the foundation remains of a larger barn and its adjacent small stone-sided dairy which once provided the cool storage for the farm's milk and cheeses.
While these structures are reserved for the use of the owners, they have great visual appeal and lend an unquestionable authenticity to the whole of the holiday experience.
The interior of the house is imbued with great warmth and those comforts of a cozy, vintage style one might expect of a beloved long-time family home. There remains a good deal of interesting, original or early architectural detail throughout; yet, while remaining ever respectful of its remarkable history, there is nothing stuffy about the place. Most rooms are wallpapered and many contain the original wide pine floor boards, some of which are finished in the traditional, early, artisan rendered, Nantucket spatter painting technique.
The kitchen and master bedroom, as well as one of the other bedrooms and upstairs bath, are all fitted with interior louvered window shutters. The living room, den , master bedroom and large eat-in kitchen each contains a fireplace which, while we must insist guests refrain from using, nonetheless, contribute greatly to the romance of the place.
The three bedrooms, all located on the second floor, share a large bathroom which is centrally located. For the secondary bedrooms, it may be accessed through the large second floor's back hall. For privacy, there is a separate access hallway separating this bathroom from the master bedroom. From every room in the house a picturesque water view may be enjoyed.
When these same views entice you down to the beach for a dip, an outdoor rinse shower awaits upon your return.
Afterwards, curl up in one of the wicker or Adirondack chairs on the lawn above the horseshoe shaped hyderangea garden and await the full westerly view of a strikingly magnificent setting sun over the Passage or relax in the shade of the fieldstone terrace with a cool drink as thoughts of readying the grill for a late summer's night meal under the stars occupy.
The Unique Benefits of a stay at this Historic Coastal Farm House: peace and quiet afforded by an untouched pastoral location bounded by conservation lands and steeped in history, rare natural beauty and a myriad of outdoor recreational opportunities including, but not limited to, plein air painting and photography, swimming, windsurfing, sailing, fishing, biking, walking, bird watching, shopping at outstanding local farm stands and fish markets, dining at any of the multitude of the area's fine restaurants, partaking of the annual South Coast Artists' open studio tours held on one weekend in July and one in August, attending Trinity Reperatory's live theatre, concerts at the Vets or the Rhode Island School of Design's renowned museum in Providence as well as touring Newport's spectacular world heritage site Gilded Age mansions in Newport or attending the famed Newport Folk and Jazz Festivals. Summary: We spent a great week at this incredibly sweet old farmhouse. Located in a great part of Tiverton ( walk to a beach, less than 5 minute drive to wonderful cafe and ice cream shop, and 15 minute drive to great ocean beach ), the house was clean and well kept. Yard is spacious with no other houses nearby so feels very private. Great view over the fields to the beach and sunsets over the water.

Summary: Pastoral setting overlooking the water with a short walk to a large beach. We loved the spacious property and used the heck out of the yard, Adirondack chairs, patio, grill, outdoor shower, and picnic table. Sunsets were remarkable and just an idyllic setting all around. I would not recommend this home for kids under 4ish (?) depends on the kid of course - but lots of gorgeous antiques and furniture, as well as some steep staircases. The owner was exceptionally helpful, welcoming, and communicative about the stay and went above and beyond to give us local tips on things to do. We loved our stay!

Summary: We had a wondeful week at the Fogland Ferry Farmhouse in Tiverton. The location is fabulous: every morning we would walk down to Fogland beach for a swim (bring water shoes, it's a sand-and-gravel beach). Afternoons, we relaxed on the shady lawns looking out over the Sakonnet river. At night (it was July 4th) we watched the fireworks from across the river in Newport. The house is a classic New England pre-Revolutionary-War farmhouse, with wide board floors, steep stairs, double-hung windows held open with zig-zag wooden sticks, plenty of thru-ventilation. There is one bathroom upstairs, with a tub, and another downstairs with a stall shower. There is an outdoor, rinse-off shower (cold water only). The three bedrooms are upstairs. The kitchen was completely sufficient for the simple meals we prepared, mostly on the large Weber charcoal grill. We had good weather and always dined on the patio, with views of the river. There are many excellent options for dining out, but we mostly cooked in. There is a washer and a dryer, but we took full advantage of the opportunity to dry our towels and swimsuits on the sunny and windy clothesline. We especially enjoyed the challenge of managing the Yankee clothesline supports. Deborah, the owner, was delightful; she responded quickly to our every request. You can buy her delicious wildflower honey from The Cheese Wheel in nearby Tiverton Four Corners.

Summary: Our family of 4 just finished a wonderful week at the Tiverton house. Great location. Walk to Fogland Beach or a 20 min drive to Little Compton public beach. Near a couple great coffee/lunch spots. Dinner at The Red Dory 15 mins down the road or the Back Eddy 25 mins away. Nice cycling area. The classic colonial farmhouse is lovingly curated. Filled with wonderful but not fussy details. Has a nice view of Fogland beach and the Sakonnet. Beautiful lawn with old stone walks and gorgeous hydrangeas. Well equipped kitchen, nice breakfast table, comfy living room and den. Bedrooms are all nice and spacious. It is a classic quirky farmhouse so don’t expect a bath is every room etc. Has one small shower, an outdoor cold shower and a washer with a clothesline. WiFi worked seamlessly for work with zoom calls. A beautiful time capsule. Highly recommended. Owner was more than accommodating. All very easy.

Summary: The house is well-equipped and comfortable; it has lovely views over fields to the water. The nearby beach is in walking distance, but it's rocky and had a considerable amount of seaweed/kelp when we were there. Terrific farm stands are a short drive away. The owner is incredibly responsive and kind.

Summary: This was a very satisfying week staying in a wonderful old farmhouse. The house and grounds were well-maintained, and the views from the property were amazing, and a constant reminder of the rural coastal past (and present - there seem to be many working farm operations in the area). The beach was fantastic and not crowded even on the weekend. I highly recommend this spot and will definitely consider renting it again.
