Positive: When we went down to breakfast the following morning, the buffet selection was no better than average, and there was no decaffeinated tea available
Negative: When we arrived at the Parador de Merida, the courtyard was a building site. There was no mention of the building work when we booked directly with the hotel. As a result of the building work, there was no option to park in the courtyard. We had intended to park in the underground car park anyway, but the hotel were clear in their communications that a space could not be guaranteed. If there had been no space underground, where would we have parked? We would have had to find another hotel, because I would not leave my car on the street. But despite the lack of courtyard parking, we were still charged 22 Euros to use the underground parking, which I feel is unreasonable. When we checked in, the receptionist did not explain anything about breakfast location or timings, wifi codes or any other useful information and we had to find this out for ourselves. The room (134) was very hot – the air-conditioning was off when we arrived, and only reduced the temperature by 1 degree during the whole stay. The corridor and the room had an unpleasant smell of drains. The bathroom was a little shabby and not very clean. The jacuzzi-style bath was a good idea as we had driven for over 5 hours, but when we switched it on, a previous guest’s hair came out of one of the jets, so we abandoned that idea immediately.We investigated the pool area, but it looked quite old, rough and quite cramped, possibly as a result of the building work. The building work woke us up at 7am, which was much earlier than we had planned after the long drive the day before. Positive: Stylist Parador. Comfortable room and beds. We had dinner in the restaurant and there were lots of options of tasty dishes to choose from. Excellent regional wine too. Staff were friendly and helpful too.
Negative: The main entrance door was closed due to ongoing repairs. But the repairs did not cause any inconvenience to guests.
Summary: Stylish parador in the historical centre of Merida.
