La Garde-Freinet Villa | Pretty villa with pool in tranquil countryside near the beaches of St Tropez

4 Bedroom Villa in La Garde-Freinet

This cosy Provençal villa sleeps 7, and sits in 2.5 ha of land surrounded by olives, vines and cork oak trees. The house faces south, and has stunning views over farmland to the soft wooded hills beyond. You can sit on the terrace and watch the birds of prey circle overhead, listen to the crickets, and watch the sun go down with a cool glass of Rose, and feel as if you are in the middle of nowhere. Yet you are only 12 km from the beaches of St Tropez.
We have furnished the house with natural materials where possible, so wooden furniture, cotton bed linen, feather duvets, wooden handled cutlery and kitchen equipment, white china, and generally as few plastic and other man made materials as possible. We want the house to have a natural, romantic, away from it all feel, so if you are looking for an all singing all dancing St. Tropez villa, this is not for you. There is no TV, no outside speakers or garden or pool lights, nor is there a Jacuzzi, perfectly manicured and sprinkled lawn, no microwave, coffee pod machine, air conditioning (but fans and windows on both sides or more of every room) and the like. This is how we, and our many repeat guests, like it.
The garden is large and on many levels, and because we do not use harsh chemicals, we have lots of birds, butterflies and other native wildlife. The fields around us belong to our neighbouring wine farmer, and you can buy the excellent wine “Le Clos Servien” grown in these fields from ‘Le Hameau’ the hamlet below us, or in our favourite organic and local produce grocery shop: Le Halle de Grimaud which is a 10 minute drive from the house. This, together with the small ‘Intermarche’ next door, supplies almost everything we need. There are also two huge hypermarkets nearby: Leclerc in Cogolin, and Geant Casino in La Foux on the way to St Tropez, as well as many other specialist food shops and markets in the area.
The house is small and cosy, and sleeps 7 in two double rooms, one twin bedded room with balcony, and a single room. There is a bathroom with a roll top bath en-suite in the master bedroom, and the second double bedroom has its own ensuite with stone surrounded bath tub. There is also a separate WC inside the house. The third bathroom with tiled shower and WC is accessible from the outside. There is also an outside shower for alfresco bathing. There is a fireplace on the terrace for evening BBQ (except in the summer when BBQ's are not permitted by the local authority, when we use an electric griddle). There is a large pool with 2 pool alarms, surrounded by a large Mediterranean style garden and with views to the countryside beyond. Like most pools in this area, our pool is unheated, but which in summer is the perfect temperature for swimming.
The 2.5 hectare garden is enclosed by electric fence (to keep out the wild boar) and is very tranquil and private. It has a rustic feel, and you will see many types of birds and insects - especially butterflies, and at night, beautiful moths. If you are lucky, you will see a wild tortoise, and you will definitely see the geckos which scamper up and down the house walls at night catching insects.
The last 300 meters of the road leading to the house is rustic; it is not scary, but quite bumpy and rutted in places. It is not suitable for a low slung sports car, but otherwise is fine as long as you take it slowly for the last part.
Please note that the house is only available for stays of 1 week or more.
La Garde Freinet: La Garde Freinet is a remarkably unspoilt medieval hilltop village. It has twice weekly markets and and great local family run shops and restaurants. The village sits at the base of the Massif des Maures mountains and above the village is the Fort de Freinet from which you can walk on a stunning two hour journey through the mountains back to the house. You will see views of the snow covered Southern Alps in one direction, and the Bay of St. Tropez on the other. You will pass the Romanesque Chapelle de Notre Dame de Miramer high above the fields and farms below, and often you will be the only person around surrounded only by the bare rocks and the wild plants of the Garrigue. In the other direction from the house is the hilltop medieval village of Grimaud which also has great views, good restaurants and a local flea market. In October, the annual Chestnut festival in La Garde Freinet is a popular local event with music and stalls selling chestnut themed produce as well as hog roasts.
Beaches: The nearest beach is Port Grimaud about 10km away. From here you can also take a ferry to St. Tropez which is not only a great way to beat the traffic, but also to see the many huge and sometimes beautiful yachts in the bay. The beaches of St. Tropez, like Pamplonne, are busy and glamorous with great beach side restaurants such as the famous Club 55 where the stars like to be seen having lunch. You might prefer the quieter coves near Croix Valmer like Gigaro Plage and Dauphin Plage where the water is fresher, and the restaurants more relaxed and reasonable than on Pamplonne.
Activities, sports and sightseeing: There are quite a few golf courses nearby, and tennis near Grimaud. There is horse riding in the village of Hameau de la Tourre 1km from the house, and of course, on the beaches you can rent boats, windsurfers and go water skiing. For older children and teenagers the go-kart track near the Geant Casino supermarket is very popular. For younger children there is Aqualand.
There are also numerous local caves and châteaux where you can sample the excellent local wines.
The local town of Cogolin, whilst less idyllic than Grimaud and La Garde Freinet has many useful shops, banks, supermarkets and also a weekly market.
The Gorge de Verdon is about an hour’s drive to the North. In this amazing nature reserve you can do canoeing, rock climbing, white river rafting or just take in the incredible geological features and breath taking scenery.
About 35 min drive also to the North is the perfectly preserved Cistercian monastery of Le Thoronet which was founded in 1120.

Summary: Once again it was a great stay in this wonderful house! We come back every year with great pleasure! The location of the house is beautiful and secluded, the furnishing of the house is very tasteful in Provencal style - everything clean and well maintained, fully equipped with all the trimmings, nothing is missing! Host is extremely caring and kind! Can’t wait to come back!

Summary: We are a family of 5 (3 young children). The gardens around the property are great for exploration, with plenty of Geckos to find. The pool is deep and long, so the kids can dive and practice swimming and adults can get a good number of lengths in too, set at the lower garden tier; looking out over the hills and vineyards. The whole property is very private so an all over tan is comfortably achieved! The inside of the house is kept fresh and very well appointed, lots of attention to detail and care in terms of its upkeep. Possibly worth adding a couple more fans for the hotter months? La Garde-Freinet is a lovely town, about a 10 min drive with a number of places to eat with a boulangerie, spar and bars. We ate at Le Carnotzet, which was perfect – well cooked and presented French food, not pretentious and easy with the children. We also ate at Chez Nous in Cogolin which was fantastic, a more up market meal and very worth the visit. We visited St Tropez and the beaches on a couple of occasions but we actually preferred those at Sainte Maxime (quieter, more laid back). I enjoy a run on holiday and found a lovely quiet 8 miler from the property. The property is down a dirt track and you will need to be confident driving, a 4x4 would always be better however I wouldn’t say needed; we had a basic family sized Renault Kadjar and it was fine, no issues at all. A well-chosen property and location, very enjoyable break. Thank you very much to the owner and Peter, who looks after the maintenance.

Summary: We spent 2 weeks at le Clos des Ours. First of all, thank you to Peter and Elsebeth, we felt at home as of first minute. I spent the vacation with my mom, and my two girls. They chose their rooms, and the house and estate allows all walks of live to do their thing respecting the others rest and privacy. The pool is absolutely superb, and a walk through the garden provides great views on the grimaud valley, and the surrounding ‘vignes’. Absolute privacy and rest, and close enough to join grimaud (3km) and the busy st tropez. I have nothing to add in terms of customer experience, we got what we hoped for, and it was absolutely fabulous. Thank you for the recommendations wrt restaurants, we did almost all, top! Shopping we did at e leclerc, closest in terms of traffic time, and all my girls needed was there. Hope to be back soon.

Summary: The house and location are wonderful, as described on the site. The house is big enough for 5 to 6 people. The garden and swimming pool (could not use it as too cold but normal that time of the year) are gorgeous. Our dog could run freely (there is an electric fence surrounding the property). Many nice hikes and walks in the near. Just between Grimaud and La Garde Freinet so you can pick your preferred spot. Only drawback is that there is no shower in the house itself, you have to go out to get into another area where a shower is located. Probably not an issue on summer (esp. as there is an outside shower too) but in April, it was a bit tough on us :-). I had to arrive earlier than first expected for family reason and the tenants were super helpful and arranged everything super quickly. Very nice, friendly people. can only recommend.

Summary: We arrived in heavy rain and were soaked after unloading the car. Due to the rain, last 20 meter of the road were challenging. But, the day after, sun arrived and we had a full week of sun. The road dried up and with a normal car its well doable. The house has everything to relax. Well equipped kitchen, so no need for us to go out for dinner. We could prepare everything we liked by ourselves. Pool is great for teenagers. Temperature was chilly still, but the sun was compensating enough. For a family of 5 kitchen and living room provides enough to space to move. 7 adults inside would be soso. Living outside is no issue at all. The yard, pool, garden. Its all huge! Again, great spot to enjoy your vacation. We like to come back!

Summary: We are a family of 6, including three generations and we all stayed comfortably at Le Clos d’Ours for a week in late October/early November and loved it! Although our first 2 days were very rainy we found the home and property lovely even in bad weather. The first day we were greeted by a nice selection of cheese, fresh baguettes, wine and snacks (a nice touch!). The rest of our trip was good weather and we had fun exploring the region’s hiking trails, coastline, small medieval towns, markets, and chestnut festivals. We frequented the Halle de Grimaud - excellent selection and quality food. The small Intermarche in Grimaud was great as well. We cooked almost all our meals and didn’t need to go to larger stores. Great kitchen and decor throughout the home. We appreciate the eco-friendly nature of the property. The quiet and charming property had excellent sunrises and was perfect for stargazing. We hope to be back!

Summary: We had the opportunity of staying in Le Clos d'Ours in June this year and we had a wonderful time. The house ist nestled in the mountains between Grimaud and la Garde Freinet and ist surrounded by beautiful landscapes and vineyards. The grapes for the local vines grow right in front of you... You definitely have to go by car as there is no public transport anywhere near. Communication with Elsebeth and Barbara was very friendly and helpful and the way to the house was explained carefully- maybe it would be good to have the name of the house somewhere on the green gate - we drove by at first. When we arrived, we were welcomed by olives, cheese and a cold rosé. Peter, who takes care of the house came immediately whenever there was anything to fix, which was rare though. The house was immaculately clean and very tastefully furnished, you had a wonderful view from every window. The kitchen had - for once!- everything you could possibly need for cooking. There is a big fridge, a washing machine and dryer. The beds were very good and the wifi worked well enough for Teams-Meetings. We absolutely loved the big pool and the outdoor shower and took advantage of the many places you can see and visit in the area - from St Tropez to Ramatuelle or Grimaud. You can even go to Aix en Provence or Frejus in about an hour. There are several beaches that you can reach within 20 minutes. We can fully recommand the place and will be happy to return.
