Medanales House | River Farm Guest Casita - A Sheltered Pastoral Abode

1 Bedroom House in Medanales

Part of a lovely organic farm along the Chama River in Medanales, neighboring Abiquiu. The casita sleeps two comfortably in the bedroom with queen size bed and can accomodate an additional child or adult in the loft. The cozy casita has a small living/kitchen area, a full bathroom with Mexican tile, and a separate bedroom. The loft is accessed through the bedroom. There is a covered portal with a wood stove and comfortable furniture on the front of the casita overlooking the vineyard and fields.
The casita is screened from the main house and is oriented toward the gardens, fields and vineyard. The flagstone patio borders the acequia, the traditional irrigation canal for the farm, and looks out over farmland and down to the cottonwood trees bordering the river. A small bridge leads across the acequia into the vineyard and old orchard. Guests are invited to enjoy seasonal produce.
You can also walk the 1/2 mile down the lane along the farm fields and through the meadow land to banks of the Chama River and enjoy the peacefulness of the river from the shaded campsite at the riverbank with picnic table and chairs and firepit.
Nearby the farm, hiking and riding trails lead to BLM and National Forest lands offering a variety of landscapes to enjoy -- vast open mesas, arroyos to explore, pine forests, mountain vistas. Also nearby are the ruins of little-known old Indian settlements. Ojo Caliente with its fabled hot springs and spa facilities is a short drive from the farm.
Medanales is a small village with a Hispanic population and tradition just south of Abiquiu of Georgia O’Keeffe fame. The landscape varies from pastures to badlands, with the magic Cerro Pedernal and Sierra Negra on the horizon. Both can be climbed by the more experienced hiker.
Ghost Ranch and the wide and splendidly colored Piedra Lumbre basin are nearby, as is Plaza Blanca with its white sandstone formations. Espanola, the main town in this predominantly Hispanic area, is 15 minutes away. Quite a few interesting restaurants that serve local cuisine (with red or green chili!) can be found here.

Summary: Thanks to Lisa and Jann for a most relaxing get-away. We enjoyed day-trips to Chama, Taos, Abiquiq, Santa Fe, Los Alamos, Bandelier National Monument and other close attractions. Each day we also enjoyed our casita, the walks to the Rio Chama River and exploring their farm. Jack&Betty

Summary: We loved this little cozy retreat! The casita was perfect to start from and return to from our hikes, walks and visits to Ghost Ranch, Taos, Bandelier National Monument, Plaza Blanca, Santa Fe, Petroglyphs National Monument, and Old Town Albuquerque. And when we stayed at the casita once in a while, we enjoyed our morning walk on the farm to the Rio Chama, our run on the quiet road to the little Church in Medalanes, or just sitting outside watching the humming birds fighting for a spot at the feeder. For us, it was a perfect stay to relax and reload. Thank you Lisa and Djann for being warm, welcoming hosts on your organic farm and also your little paradise on earth!

Summary: Our family spent a wonderful Christmas in the Casita. Lisa and Djann were very welcoming, they had great recommendations for places to see and eat. The location is great. We had a beautiful hike at ghost ranch about 20 min away. The Casita was very cozy and the perfect size for our little family. We had a couple nights with a little fire and listened to the wildlife. Thank you Djann and Lisa we had enjoyed our stay!

Summary: I liked this property online, however, in person is better. The pics don’t do it justice. It is a bit isolated, but is part of the charm, close to the Chama river and with in easy driving distance to Taos, Santa Fe, Ojo Caliente, Abiquiu, and Bandelier park. The accommodations are very comfortable, with inside and outside furnishings. The bedroom has a comfortable queen bed with a loft above with an extra bed. Kitchen supplied well and organized, full sized oven/stove top with a small refrigerator. Large bath with a step-walk in shower , lots of hot water! Lots of windows and great natural light. Owners stayed up late to meet us and help us get settled in. Very welcoming atmosphere, we will definitely stay again!

Summary: This is a terrific place, with a great cabin, and view off the back patio. The hosts, Jan and Lisa are great people and they are working on installing “Glamping Tents” located on the Chama River. We originally went to fly fish, but all the rivers were in runoff stage, so we explored Taos, Santa Fe, and Abiquiu and took some time to relax and walk around the farm with our two dogs. Be sure to bring a big cooler or two and plenty of ice for an extended stay. We were fortunate to meet the neighbors, Curtis and Leroy, and who gave us ideas to explore, and plenty of history of the area. All in all, we had a wonderful time in a fun environment, and although the weather was sometimes cold, (to us AZ visitors), the cabin was warm and the porch comfortable and very relaxing. We will stay there again in the Fall. We very much look forward to having Jan and Lisa come visit us! Thank you for a rewarding vacation. Bob and Tammy
