3 Bedroom Place in Vendee - Sevre - Autise, Le Coudreau Saint-Sigismond

La Grange is a detached property with original stonework, wooden floor, exposed beams and a wood-burning stove. Outside there is an enclosed garden which is perfect for sitting quietly in the shade of the hot summer sun. Hire a canoe (payable locally) and explore the local canal network, or visit the pretty villages, markets and beaches of the Vendée and Charente.
Climate:
Our region is blessed with an exceptional number of sunshine hours per year ( 2250). It is the sunniest region in Western France. Winter is mild and the mimosas flower as early as January; Spring comes early (and is beautiful) and, whilst Summer naturally sees most tourist activity, Autumn is still warm enough for the calmer main holiday.
The Coast:
The coast of the Poitou Charentes is one of the most popular with French holidaymakers, known for its long stretches of fine sand and good weather. The famous coastal town of La Rochelle is located in the Charente Maritime department. The old harbour and three medieval towers symbolise the port's rich history; there are lively quayside markets, trendy bars and excellent restaurants a-plenty Take a guided tour in a horse-drawn carriage, a boat trip to Fort Boyard or visit the fascinating aquarium The idyllic beaches of the Ile de Re (some 30km worth) are also within easy reach and the island is well worth a day's visit in its own right.
The Countryside:
The area is perfect for walking, riding and cycling The countryside is made up of rolling hills divided up into a patchwork quilt of sunflower and corn fields interspersed with fields containing cows and goats. The marais poitevin (or Green Venice) is a fascinating maze of rivers, dykes and tree-shaded canals which thread between meadows and fields. They cover an area of 230,000 acres from Niort and Fontenay-Le-Compte to the Atlantic ocean. The best way to explore is by boat, either with or without a guide. Visit, also, the Poitou donkey park at Dampierre-sur-Boutonne and marvel at this special breed of dreadlocked donkey!
Theme Parks:
Futuroscope, in Poitiers, is a collection of simulated visual spectacles, ranging from a white knuckle ride to journeys of dicovery in 3D to a magic carpet to a ride in a Formula 1 car. Puy du Fou is a huge medieval theme park with fascinating displays during both the day and the night. Marvel at the beautiful birds of prey, gasp at the stunt riders and take a step back in time in the vast roman stadium.
History:
The region's history could have been lifted from an adventure story book: visit medieval fortresses, roman churches, Renaissance chateaux, protestant temples, grand abbeys, ramparts, fortifications and dungeons. Across the region stand some 600 beautiful examples of the Romanesque sanctuary, a heritage which began around the 10th century with techniques born of the Christian Roman Empire
Food & Drink:
The food of the region is simple and rustic, the food of peasants, but created from the wonderful local vegeatbles, fruits, dairy produce and fish. Seafood has pride of place with mussels in white wine and oysters wrapped in bacon and grilled with garlic butter as two of the more famous examples. Eels flourish in the marshes of the Poitou and are eaten grilled on coals or stewed with onions, muhrooms, butter and white wine. Other favourites from the marshes are fricassed frogs legs or garlic-stuffed snails. The markets of the region are colourful and extremely interesting, there is no better place to buy your provisions; lamb, beef or seafood, melons from Haut-Poitou or vegetables from the coast. There are 50 or so goat's cheeses or how about a torteau fromager, a delicate cake made from goat's cheese with a crispy blackened top. Those with a sweet tooth can buy some candied angelica in Niort or taste a multitude of flavoured honeys in Coulonges market.

Summary: We arrived at the barn after a long journey to be greeted with lots of lovely goodies left for us by the owner Mariusz. The barn is beautifully decorated and spotless. Our dog loved the garden and was quite smitten with the owners dog who is so cute and sweet. From the beams to the beautiful decor the barn was somewhere that I would stay again and again. The garden was full of fruit trees and the grape vine that grew across the front of the barn was full of the sweetest grapes I had ever tasted. There is a boat trip in st sigismond that you really should try. We hired a rowing boat for a small fee and had the best time. We spotted water voles herons and beavers to name a few little critters that spoilt us with their cheeky curiosity. The area is beautiful with fields of sunflowers and corn and the weather was beautiful too. It was even lovely being woken up by Mariuszes Cockerell who came to say hello along with a mother chicken that loved showing off her chicks to us. The walks were amazing around the barn and if you turned left as you left the drive gate you was greeted with forest walks that went on forever so perfect if you had a dog like us who even though she is 14 loves nothing better than a good country walk. Thankyou Mariusz for making us feel so welcome and so looking forward to coming back to see you again next year. We all loved our holiday and leaving was very hard for us but we know that we will definitely be back. Especially if we can have some more of your jumpy honey from your own bees. A truly wonderful experience.

Summary: Great place to stay in the Marais Poitevan. Fabulous accommodation which has all the amenities that you need whilst on holiday. Great local cycle rides and plenty more within an hour's reach. A superb part of the French countryside. And of course not forgetting the best of owners; Mariusz and his very friendly dog (Kietek).

Summary: We liked the house very much, it was clean, comfortable and apart from the unreliable wifi, everything worked as it should. The weather was beautiful for mid-October and we spent a lot of our time cycling around the quiet lanes and canalside paths. We had great fun the afternoon we hired a canoe from Damvix! Thanks for Mariusz for allowing us mid-week arrival and departure days.

Summary: We enjoyed two weeks in this lovely accommodation. There were 6 adults and 3 dogs staying and we all had plenty of room inside and out. It was modern, comfortable, clean and tidy and the owner made us feel very welcome on arrival. The gite is in an unspoilt community where the locals are friendly and chatty. It was a super base from which to discover the gems of the region, and I would recommend it highly.

Summary: My family and I stayed in this beautifully converted barn for a week in the early summer of this year. The accommodation is stylish, comfortable, spacious and extremely good value for money. The owner Mariusz was always available and most helpful with suggestions on nearby visitor attractions, local restaurants and activities. We spent a wonderful day out at the nearest beach, sampled local cuisine at a nearby village and took a lazy, scenic boat trip along the nearby canal. There are plenty of beautiful walks around the area too. During our stay my daughter had the opportunity to feed the chickens with Mariusz, harvest honey from his very own bee hives and even go fishing to catch her own fish for dinner while my husband and I dined on local fresh oysters, wine and champagne. We had an unforgettable holiday in France and hope to return very soon. Thank you Mariusz for everything!

Summary: My girlfriend and I stayed at this property in Aug 2011 and it was easily the best value break we have had. The accomodation is very clean and tidy and the friendly owner Mariusz was on hand to help with any of our requests and also to offer friendly tourism information for the area. We spent our time drinking local champagne and eating oysters straight from the sea.... this was a luxury break on a shoestring. We will definately be visiting again in the near future....
