Positive: Really cute cozy place, had that traditional Japanese guesthouse vibe, also really good value for money. You can order dinner every night if you want, the meal was super delicious, wish I didn't only find out about it on my last night :D

Negative: Only had one western style toilet and it was proper freezing in the bathroom at night. But not such a big problem overall.

Positive: The hotel was very clean and comfortable, and everything was well maintained. I especially enjoyed the bedroom, which was very cozy and relaxing. The location was also excellent, with many tourist attractions and convenience stores nearby. The breakfast was simple but enjoyable.

Negative: Please note that the hotel amenities require an additional charge of 100 yen, but I found it reasonable and acceptable. There was occasionally a cigarette smell near the front of the hotel due to people smoking outside.

Positive: Towada backpackers is good value for money and very close to Lake Towada. It doesn't offer GF breakfasts, so I used the small kitchen upstairs. Be warned, there is only a small corner shop in the town, that only has the very basics. I couldn't find paracetamol for example. It is right next door to a hotel with a fabulous onsen that you can access for ¥500. I never had to use the backpackers' bathroom for that reason! I had hired a car, and there was ample parking out the front. Public transport is patchy, so I would recommend hiring a car.

Negative: There were no options for a GF breakfast. Some rice would have been fine.

Summary: Fantastic location, within walking distance of the Lake and next to a public onsen.

Positive: Big social hangout/dining room. It is cosy and inviting for social interaction! They request you to make your own bed, which at this price (and given it's a hostel) is totally okay!

Negative: Maybe some more milk during breakfast.
