Our home is available in the winter months for sleeping 6 persons. This portion of the home is heated and air conditioned. Summer months starting May 15th opens our original portion of the home. It does not have heating or air conditioning, but offers beautiful cool lake breezes. Originally owned by the Vonnegut family of Indianapolis, the home is now a comfortable and fun historic vacation rental. The home is perched up on the highest shoreline bluff of Lake Maxinkuckee. Built in 1889 as a summer retreat from the Vonnegut residence in Indianapolis as a cabin, it and its three neighbors were expanded into great lake homes by Architect Bernard Vonnegut.
After 2 years of extensive renovations, the house boasts the comforts of modern amenities while maintaining its airy original connection to the past in its most historical portions.
Our home is unique in that we have attempted to merge the past with the present. In doing so, our home is only PARTIALLY heated and air conditioned. This scenario is represented in the change in price per season. Whether you need a place to gather for Culver Academies events, want to spend some time relaxing on the lake between golf outings, or kick your feet up after the Notre Dame game, you will experience the best Lake Maxinkuckee has to offer at our historic home on the East Shore. Lovingly restored hardwood floors and Amish handcrafted furnishings will pull you back in time, while modern appliances will make you feel like you never left the comfort of home. Truly the best of both worlds. Be on the lookout for some unique features such as a working antique Victrola, complete with a large supply of records - and across the room, a Sonos where you can listen to your own digital favorites.
During the Winter Months (October - April) rental access is limited to a heated 2 bedroom, 2 bath home with a kitchen and dining room. The sitting room can be made into a 3rd bedroom via a comfortable Murphy bed if desired. The rest of the home is less desirable during this time as there is no heat in classic Lake cabin style, and our Northern Indiana winters can be very chilly.
During the Summer Months (May - September) our home opens up, providing access to the non heated/non air conditioned sections of the home, and we can accommodate up to 24 people (18 adults + 2 toddlers + 4 on roll-a-way beds) with 7 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms. Only the 2 bedrooms, 2 baths, sitting room, kitchen and dining room with heat in the winter are air conditioned in the summer (both heat and cooling are geothermal).
The oldest part of the house gets an almost constant, pleasant breeze up the bluff from the lake and can be comfortable on even the hottest days (but it should be clear it is not air conditioned). We provide fans for summer and space heaters for winter. Guest also have a fully equipped kitchen ready for meal prep, as well as clean linens and a very large washer and dryer.
I will correspond with you prior to your arrival to let you know how to access the key to our home. With a population around 1,500, Culver is likely one of the safest places you might stay. However, we do ask that you lock up your personal belongings if you leave the house, as we can not be responsible for any missing items.
During your stay, I am only a phone call away. If for any reason I am not available, we also have a licensed and bonded contractor who can fix (or can figure out) just about anything. Culver is one big neighborhood. The East Shore of Lake Maxinkuckee has historically been one of the most prestigious locations on the lake thanks to the magnificent sunsets, large shore frontage, and convenience to town. The Town of Culver offers a grocery, pharmacy, bank, post office, and churches, along with interesting shops and dining.
You can't get lost in Culver, but you may fall in love! Maps, along with lists of eateries, golf courses, things to do, and general town information can be found in the informational welcome book at our house for your convenience. Any specific questions can be directed to me personally.
Other things to note:
Our home sits on one of the highest points on the East Shore. While this location provides the most beautiful sunsets and an amazing summer breeze, please note there are 56 steps down to the water's edge and our wooden pier/boat dock, making it difficult or impossible for individuals with disabilities. We have approximately 75 feet of water front, divided between a small sandy area and board walk/pier, please see pictures. While the home is not specifically child proofed, we do provide a booster seat for dining, as well as a pack-n-play. If you need additional accommodations for youngsters, please let me know, and I will do my best to help.
