Highland Mills Bed & Breakfast | Welcome to Rushmore Estate

1 Bedroom Bed & Breakfast in Highland Mills, Woodbury

Elegant-Private-Breathtaking
Fifty private acres are waiting for you in the lower Hudson Valley. Just forty five minutes from New York City. Unwind and relax in old world style with unassuming beauty and timeless elegance. Located undeveloped forest, Rushmore Estate’s breathtaking beauty comes from its natural surroundings. Well-manicured lawns lead guests to a romantic gazebo, a maze of hiking trails that can be used year-round, and an infinity pool overlooking a private lake with its own beachfront. More competitive guests can enjoy the tennis court and full-sized basketball courts during the day or under lights at night.
The Rushmore Estate has only four suites, guaranteeing privacy and luxury, as well as personalized attention. The pristine setting of the Rushmore Estate offers a myriad of outdoor activities; such as fishing on a private lake, hiking on marked trails, canoeing, paddle boarding...just to name a few. Come sit by the 60-foot infinity pool overlooking the lake, hike past a waterfall, or play a game of tennis
Located just minutes from world famous Woodbury Common Premium Outlets, Brotherhood Winery (oldest winery in America), Bear Mountain, Storm King Arts Center, Harriman State Park, and WEST POINT MILITARY ACADEMY...and many more destinations that make the Hudson Valley a destination to return time and time again.
Much of the house s interior has been preserved in its original condition. The Rushmore Estate’s ballroom features vaulted ceilings with elegant plaster carvings, French doors opening to a stone patio, oak floors and an oversized fireplace. The space can quickly and easily become a place to entertain or shoot pool.
The rooms make the Rushmore Estate a unique experience, illustrating lavish architecture in each room that can shift from a personal dining room into a sitting room. A fireside library is available for cocktails. Above the ballroom are four large guest suites, each with its own private bath.
Outside, an unusual landmark remains from the early 1900s: A stone and stucco clocktower with the original Tiffany clock still ticking inside.
Financier and attorney Charles E. Rushmore (of Mt. Rushmore’s namesake) commissioned the 25-room, four building estate in 1908. This spectacular Spanish Colonial-style mansion served as place for Rushmore’s ill wife, Jeannette, to rest. The pristine grounds and privacy provided a perfect respite from the hustle and rush of New York City.
Well-maintained throughout the years, the Rushmore Estate still does as it once intended—but not just for the owner and his family.

The Rushmores in Woodbury
Charles Rushmore was born in New York City in 1856 and remained a resident of New Yorker his entire life. He founded his own law firm, Rushmore, Bisbee & Stern, and had the largest New York banks as his clients.
Around 1900, because of Mrs. Rushmore’s ill health, the family decided that good country air would improve her condition.
They settled in Highland Mills for their new home and first lived in a house on Quaker Road. Soon the Rushmores began acquiring property in the Woodbury area, eventually owning 1,500 acres, including Schunnemunk Mountain.
In 1908, they built a mansion of Spanish colonial design which they named Carmore (the “Car” from Carpenter, Mrs. Rushmore’s maiden name, and the “more” from Rushmore).
It still stands today, known as the Rushmore Estate, with much of the original land now part of the Brigadoon housing community off Route 32.

Summary: My (now) fiancée and I had an amazing stay at Rushmore Estate, so much so that we got engaged on the property. It was such a beautiful property and the staff clearly highly values hospitality. Russell, Sergio, and Karen were so helpful and welcoming. Would absolutely stay here again!

Summary: My husband and I loved this property. The entry gates were just the start of our romantic stay at this beautiful estate. The grounds are meticulous, and the mansion is majestic. The manager couldn't have been more helpful. We stayed in the Roosevelt Room which was spacious and comfortable. Breakfast was prepared beautifully each morning. All in all, it was a Five Star experience!

Summary: Great weekend getaway from NYC! The property is located in a somewhat more secluded area along the west side of the Hudson, not in the more touristy towns along the river. We enjoyed that because it was more nature-y. The property has its own pond, with kayaks, paddle boards, and peddle boats for use on the pond; a private tennis court; large lawns; several swinging chairs and benches hanging from trees; and a gazebo. There's also a very nice, short, private, wooded trail around the pond. We saw a family of 3 deer walking along it once while we were using the peddle boat... very relaxing and peaceful. As for rooms, there are 4 suites: We stayed in the Roosevelt suite, which was recently renovated and spacious. It's a great choice. You could hear the guests in the next room a bit, but that wasn't an issue because everyone visiting the property seemed like they wanted the same thing, which was just to relax in relative quiet, so people tended to use their "inside voices."Overall, it's a great place to getaway from the hustle of NYC. The property has its own slice of nature, including a private pond, beach, and nature trail. And there was a bonfire at night, which was perfect for star-gazing on the beach and enjoying a glass of wine.Russell (the house manager) is a great host and very responsive to any email, text, or request. He really goes above and beyond to try to fix any issue that comes up, he's very accommodating, and he gives suggestions of places to eat, shop, hike, and see art. He's fantastic!Looking forward to getting back up there.A few things to note: (1) The pool is not heated, so if it's not a very hot day, the pool is probably unusable for most people. (2) The hot tub in the pool does not work. (3) The wifi was down while we were visiting. Russell tried fixing it. We ultimately told him not to worry about it because our cell reception was good enough and we could tether our laptops just fine to send emails (we weren't streaming videos, though, that might have been an issue). (4) The main house (which is completely separate from the rental house) is under renovation, in case you were interested in seeing that... but that's not a big issue and doesn't take away from the enjoyment of the property.
