Positive: Woodbine Retreat is a quirky little place with character. Not quite an apartment, or a cottage, or a bunk house or anything in-between but yet possesses all the features you'd expect from a holiday let. It has to be seen to be understood. I was very impressed with how Woodbine Retreat had been put together especially in such a small space. Clearly a lot of thought and effort and care has gone into the place which is evident when you stay there. The building seems like an old church building/out-house or something similar but has been transformed into a homely, sophisticated and rustic yet modern place to stay. It's very small and probably not suitable for a party larger than 2 people (and maybe 2 people is a squeeze perhaps!) but it's tiny size is made up for in what it offers. The place has been finished to a very high standard all the way throughout which makes for a very warming, comfortable and enjoyable stay and return after being out. The living area is compact but has everything you need for a short term stay with nothing missing as all is taken care of. The bathroom was a pleasure to use and like the rest of the place was fitted to a high standard including a rainfall shower. The place was easy to get to just off the road and with Earl Sterndale being such a tiny little village, it's hard to make a wrong turn! The village was pleasant, quiet and peaceful with plenty of walks nearby (a few literally on the doorstep!) as well as a local bus service that runs between Buxton and Ashbourne every other hour. The local area is a beautiful place surrounded by rolling hills, valleys and countryside for miles in every direction and you probably couldn't pick a better place for a base camp with Buxton being your connection to the rest of the Peak District you're not too far away from exploring what it has to offer.
Negative: All was great! Though there are some considerations. The place is small so plan ahead if you're not on your own. Personally I'd consider this place to be an ideal solo traveler accommodation but you could bring someone else you'd probably be squeezing past each other! The heating in the living area can be a bit temperamental. I found out how to operate the radiator by pulling a manual off the internet and was straightforward once I knew how to keep it going. It seems like there's a feature that turns the heat down when the radiator detects a sudden drop in temperature (when a window is open etc.) to save energy but this also triggers when the temp drops so the radiator can randomly turn off and won't turn back on unless the temperature rises which is annoying cause the only heat source in the living room is the radiator itself. Switching it to manual and doing this a few times gets the temperature up until it's hot enough that it doesn't mistake the low temperature for an open window! After doing this the temperature in the living room remained consistent otherwise it got quite chilly! It would have been a bonus to have a washer/dryer instead of just a dryer in the outhouse as being such a small place cleaning clothes by hand was done in the kitchenette sink and I couldn't spot a clothes line to spread them out on. Late autumn/early winter could be a challenge! Be forewarned, Earl Sterndale is a very small village! Except from a church and a primary school, there's nothing within a good few miles in any direction so plan ahead, especially during the winter months. If you're relying on public transport, double (or triple) plan ahead! The bus service doesn't run on a Sunday and the nearest one on a Sunday is a decent (3-4 miles depending on how you get there) walk away on Buxton Road.

Positive: Ideal village location for visiting the Peak District; only a few miles from Buxton Very generous welcome food package provided by the host, which was very much appreciated! Small property but beautifully decorated, with a lovely bathroom, fantastic shower, and a well equipped kitchenette. Bed linen and towels were also of excellent quality. We would stay again.
Negative: The mattress on the bed could have been a little thicker, for added support and comfort. The addition of an extended headboard on the bed end, opposite the television, would have made for ease of viewing when in bed?
Summary: Cosy Accommodation In Great Location

Positive: Beautiful little building perfect for a couple of nights. Good cooking facilities and generous fridge (no freezer). Property has SKY tv which was handy for rainy evenings
Negative: Only criticism is that the local pub opposite the let was closed. No reflection of Woodbine Retreat of course but it would have been very convenient to have ready made food and drink after a long drive to get there. Without the pub there is very little, however, the saving grace was that the owner leaves you some food which included a small loaf of bread, a block of cheese, butter and jam which was a pleasant surprise.
