Positive: We enjoyed our time there. Host is very nice and is willing to make you as much comfortable as possible. Being immersed in tradition was amazing. We were lucky enough to share the house with a Japanese family on weekend there. It made our stay even more special.

Positive: We loved our stay at the Samurai-era house—it was a wonderful, authentic experience of the Japanese countryside as it was in the olden days. We opted for both breakfast and dinner, and both were excellent: simple but delicious meals made with ingredients from the surrounding area. Although the host couldn't speak much English, he used a translator to share the story of the house and what life was like for farmers during that era, which added so much to our experience. I only wish we could have stayed for more than one night. Not a negative, but do take note that the facility only offer shared bathroom.

Positive: Lovely experience. Hirasawa was a very nice host and tried to make us feel welcome and comfortable. The house was comfortable and extremely clean, and the traditional breakfast was delicious! Please note: We would highly recommend having a car if you visit it. Access by bus is very limited (only runs twice a day), taxis from Takayama are difficult to find and very expensive and unless you have a car, there is little you can do/see.

Positive: We loved arriving at the house as the landscape really made us feel like we were in My Neighbour Totoro. It was magical and the house is in front of a pond and next to a temple. It felt like we were remote from the world yet in a very comfortable, traditional house. The host was very welcoming and cooked for us in the central foyer, which was a great experience. Overall I would recommend this unique experience. We could hear the frogs croak all night and it was magical.

Positive: A lovely old house which has been well maintained. The host is extremely gracious, and the home-cooked meals are excellent. Of note, we went in April, when the weather was starting to warm. There are insects that sleep in the wood of the house during the winter, and emerge with the heat and light. They are harmless, and our host provided a small vacuum to remove them, but might be unsettling if unexpected. I therefore recommend visiting in either Summer or Winter when there is nothing to distract you from what is otherwise a very charming setting, and it really is a wonderful place to stay.
