About the Area
Nestled just 4 miles inside the southern entrance of Yosemite National Park is the charming and historic town of Wawona. Located at the base of Chilnualna Falls (the second highest vertical drop waterfall in Yosemite), and home to the principal trailheads into the southern Yosemite wilderness, Wawona is also the closest town to the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias.
Wawona has the feel of a small town but is bustling with activity! Over 160 residents, including Yosemite Park employees, live in Wawona and can be seen gathering at the town's community center, playing a pickup game of basketball at the elementary school, jogging on one of the many picturesque trails or simply walking their dogs and baby strollers through the winding residential streets. The historic Wawona Swinging Bridge boasts the best natural water slide in the Park! The historic village is filled with docents, stagecoach rides, horseback rides, and barn dances in the summer season and the Wawona Meadow Loop offers year-round riparian meadow wildlife viewing.
Wawona was known to the local Native American Miwok in their language as Pallachun (a good place to stay). It is located entirely within Yosemite National Park (it preceded the founding of the park as a national recreation area) and is located on the South fork of the wild and scenic Merced River, on the main highway (State Route 41) from Fresno to Yosemite Valley.
Galen Clark, who helped gain preservation legislation for Mariposa Grove and what later became part of Yosemite National Park, occupied the Wawona area in 1855 and established a tourist rest and modest ranch which he later sold and made into a hotel and resort property (the Wawona Hotel). The Wawona post office was established in 1878 and was originally called Clark's Station.

Summary: Great property in a quiet community inside Yosemite. Reservation at the property avoids having to get park entry reservations because you’re staying inside the park which is a huge plus. Nearby market for groceries, grill for cooking, and a short walk to the River. A great way to experience staying in Yosemite away from the crowded campgrounds.

Summary: We love the place. Very convenient. There was market that had everything. There gas station close by. Very close to most of park trails. House was clean and big. Dish cable was not working. I wish they had smart TV. Although , we didn’t get chance to watch anything anyways.

Summary: Wawona was a great little community that was quiet and away from all of the Yosemite Valley crowds. The cabin was nice and location was great. Some things I wish I would have realized before arriving: - no AC - need to bring all of the food, bed/bath and other essential supplies you need ... little grocery within the community and Wawona but very small. We had to drive to Oakhurst to stockpile for the week which is a good 30 min drive. The cons: there were several dishes that were really dirty in the cabinets. The floors were also really dirty so I wore flip flops while inside. I totally get it with all the dust you pick up on the trails. Overall this was a great trip and stay. We would return, esp knowing everything we know going into it.

Summary: Loved the location at the end of the road and near the river. Liked the decor and layout of the cabin. The barbeque was a little difficult to get used to. Burns extremely hot. Lack of wifi was a problem for our son who needed to keep up with his business. Had to go to the office every time he needed to connect.
