So stylishly is it built onto a handsome, eponymous peninsula on Tortola's far west that Steele Point has previously been lauded by Architectural Digest magazine. The cantilevered villa commands a panorama of jungly islands and green-blue waters dotted with whales, sailboats and ferries. From it, spiral stairs lead down the cliff to private seaside sun decks, plus a secluded sandy cove fit for nude sunbathing and ladders enabling swimming or snorkelling. Many other white-sand beaches are close by, as are the West End's restaurants and reggae bars.
Shrouded by high palm trees, the main house has a profusion of patios, courtyards and al fresco living and dining areas. These are especially good come cocktail hour, as sunset falls over the sea. Inside the raised lounge, an L-shaped sofa and TV border the superb kitchen. Fine artworks and sculptures lend an arty feel as high, dark-wood cathedral ceilings epitomise the Caribbean atmosphere.
Four air-conditioned suites are spread across this and the two floors below. All but one have their own intimate sea-facing terrace or balcony, allowing couples some romantic private time. Most romantic of all, however, is the Frangipani Suite, in its very own pavilion at the gated estate's highest (and most scenic) point, and equipped with an exotic outdoor shower.
