Blue Heaven is a 4th-generation family cottage built in the 1920s at Port Sheldon on Lake Michigan. It has been expanded and updated over the years, but retains its rustic charm. Port Sheldon is in Ottawa County, Michigan, half way between Holland and Grand Haven; it is 30 miles directly west of Grand Rapids.
Our private Lake Michigan beach is situated 1/4 mile south of the channel leading to Pigeon Lake. The cottage sits atop a gentle dune, with a stairway (42 total steps) from the front deck to the beach.
The main level features a large living room/family room (20' x 25') with floor-to-ceiling views of Lake Michigan. A well-equipped kitchen and festive dining room lead through french doors to a large 3-season porch that overlooks a wooded area.
Stairs from the living room lead to loft-style sleeping areas with open ceilings. ** PLEASE NOTE ** there are partial walls and curtain dividers, but these are not traditional bedrooms with doors. There is a full bath (tub + shower) on the upper level, and one half-bath on the main level.
A rec room and laundry area are located in the walk-out lower level.

Summary: Special cottage with a cozy, beach vibe. All the fun to be had being steps to the sandy beach, chairs, umbrella, kayaks and fire pit provided. Our chocolate lab enjoyed the beach as much as we did and fetched the stick in the waves for hours. The cottage had everything we needed and we actually never ended up leaving (except to grocery shop). Some of our group needed to work remotely and that was not a problem - although, know that the cell phone service is a little spotty. To get down to the beach, there is a flight of stairs, a sandy path and once on the bluff, a little maneuvering is needed to get down to the beach. To climb back up the owners were nice enough to place a rope ladder to make the climb easier. Easy for kids and most adults, but if you had elderly or handicapped the beach access could be challenging. All in all, well equipped (games and all) cottage with a casual, comfortable, beach feel. Would definitely recommend!

Summary: My family enjoyed our time at this cute 4th generation cottage right on the beach of Lake Michigan. Simple, no frills yet everything we needed for our stay - for the beach or when you want to beat the heat and spend a little time inside. John was a wonderful host - great communicator and explained all nuances that we needed to know about his family cottage. It was exactly as described and full of fun items and history around the house. The view from the back porch was stunning. As expected, lots of steps to the beach but not too bad at all. The only thing I was not aware of was that we needed to use the installed rope ladder to get from the bluff down to the beach. It was quite manageable for me, the kids and our dog once we figured out how to navigate it. Made for great videos and memories. The bedrooms were comfortable and airy. It did not bother us at all that the walls did not go all the way to the ceiling. John made sure to tell us that ahead of time. We cooked all of our meals but 2 at the cottage. Small, efficient kitchen with everything that you need. We liked that we were off the beaten path. It is private but not isolated. There's plenty to do closeby in Grand Haven, Holland and Saugatuck. Would highly recommend to friends. I can see why John has repeat guests every year.

Summary: Thank you for sharing your family home with us - we had a wonderful vacation! Everything was thought of and provided - wonderful house, full of surprises. Felt less like a rental and more like visiting grandparents' summer cottage - so warm and authentic, it was a treat for the soul! Our dog had the time of his life too - loved running on the beach and in the waves, meeting friendly neighbors and other pups. Beds were so comfortable and house extremely well appointed. The owner has been very responsive, accommodating, and a pleasure to interact with.

Summary: My husband and I have vacationed on the west side of MI for years, we really wanted a little more privacy away from the craziness of typical Grand Haven beach. This cottage was perfect. It is adorable inside and out. Plenty of room for us and our 3 kids. Our dog was in heaven. Everything you would need they had, beach chairs, umbrellas, I kayaked every day. The kitchen well equipted. The beach was great. And plenty to do with 2 big cities 10 miles in each direction. I would highly recommend and would absolutely go back. It was the best week of my summer.

Summary: Our family had a great time at this house! The layout is great for kids and adults alike. Very comfortable and reminded my mother-in-law so much of the cottage she spent her summers in as a little girl. The beach is just steps away and is very private. The kayaks were a hit as were the ping pong and pool tables. The house is equipped with multiple sound systems and easily hooks up to an iPad to play music. Toys for the kids and board games that were provided kept everyone entertained the one day of rain we had. The sleeping accommodations worked out great and and the A/C was a great added bonus! Sandy Point Beach House just down the street was a great restaurant we went to 4 times and it didn't disappoint. Both, Holland and Grand Haven are quaint towns that have a lot to offer as far as shops and restaurants. All in all, our family had a great time and would come back to this house any day!

Summary: This cottage is perfect for a family looking to spend time on Lake Michigan. The cottage is spacious and well appointed with everything you need. Plenty of room to relax after enjoying the water and the beach. The owners are great people and keep the cottage in excellent condition. The beach area is very nice with plenty of recreational items (chairs, kayaks, row boat, etc.). "Blue Heaven" is a gem and a perfect place to relax!

Summary: My wife and I had a wonderful week at this cottage on Lake Michigan! Beautiful view, gorgeous sunsets, and a nice and relaxing beach area.
