Manitoulin District Cottage | Beautiful 4 Acre Private Island ~ Secluded Getaway ~ Truly A Special Place!

2 Bedroom Cottage in Manitoulin District, birch island

Our island is about 4 acres, with a variety of trees from white birch, oak, maple, white pine and lots of cedar. We have wonderful swimming right off our dock. Trophy pike, musky , bass, perch, splake, lake trout, pickeral and pan fish abound.
Remember, you are in the Great Lakes. Because we are located in a sheltered bay the water temperature is great for swimming and other water sports. The island is conveniently located and easy to get to and from the small marina where your vehicle will be parked.
This is truly a special place offering a great get away with modern conveniences. For those into photography this is the place. You will find fantastic sunsets, wildlife and wonderful panoramic views everywhere you look. I also recommend a day trip exploring Manitoulin the worlds largest fresh water island.
You will feel like you've gone back in time, with beautiful pastoral landscapes, split rail fences, inland lakes and quaint port towns offering shopping and great places to eat. But if you are like me, you may not want to leave the bay. For those who treasure nature and a comfortable retreat away from resorts and the city.
One of our recent young visitors said 'this is better than Disney!'
We also offer Guided Fishing Excursions from 3 days to 1 week. Our most popular is the Father/Son-Daughter trip. Of course Mothers can come too. We provide the guides, boats, food, bedding ect. Basically all you need is your proper clothing, fishing equipment and camera. We can handle most of the rest. Check out our Video Links!!!
Please come, you will not be disappointed. Thank you and 'Happy Trails'. J. Dillon

We want to make your stay a memorable and stress free one. You will find most everything you need. We don't want you to worry about bringing anything but your food, clothing, camera, sunscreen and flashlights. You will find our kitchen has most any appliance you will need. We also try to provide garbage bags, paper towels, toilet paper etc.
Check in is 3pm/check out is 10pm unless other arrangements are needed and can be met. Our cleaner may need to overlap slightly on rare occasions for a short time. We ask our guests to strip the sheets and start a load before leaving to help the cleaner.
Please remove all items from the refrigerator and take all garbage from the island. I provide large bags since the marina charges per bag to dispose of garbage. There are recycle bins at the marina.
KITCHEN
You will find our kitchen well equipped. Gas stove, full sized fridge and small drink fridge on back deck, toaster, microwave, food processor, kitchen aid, 2 coffee pots(drip and Perk), coffee grinder, malt/shake maker etc.

LIVING AREAS
You will find 2 areas in the main Cabin to hang out. The area by the stone fireplace is a magnet to congregate for conversation or enjoying a hot cup of coffee or your favorite beverage. The Lower level has a card table for games, puzzles etc. and a day bed for those wonderful afternoon naps or reading that great book. You will find an assortment of games: chess, cards, backgammon, scrabble, chinese checkers and others. You will find a wide selection of books on shelves to be enjoyed.
SLEEPING LOFT
You will find a small sleeping loft in the main cabin with 2 twin beds, great for young ones as a "little get away".
+the main breaker panel is found behind a picture just left go the fireplace.
BATH HOUSE
In the bath house you will find an antique clawfoot tub and shower, flush toilet and washer/dryer. There is another breaker box above and to the left of the washer.
Sunmar Composting Toilet
This is the most environmentally friendly type of waste system for an island setting. You will find detailed instructions but I will go over them with you once you arrive.
MAIN SLEEP CABIN
This cabin offers a queen bed and a small woodturning stove. The open ceiling, walls and floors are covered by local cedar.
"Girls cabin", As the name implies we built this cabin for our daughters and comes with 2 twin and 1 double bed.

Summary: The owner was very accommodating and responsible in the time of covid. There were potential difficulties with getting there through the marina which is on native land. He offered a refund close to our date but it all worked out. The property is as advertised. It is beautifully rustic. The only down side is that it is near the marina and there could be a lot of boat traffic (which we did not experience because the Americans could not get across the border). We enjoyed ourselves thoroughly and would be happy to return.

Summary: The whole family had a great time: swimming, fishing, boating, discovering the bay... A charming cottage with the convenience of letting young kids and our dog live their own life during a week and still feeling safe. Great time in the sauna, preparing and baking our own (delicious of course !) pizzas... Nothing to worry about but staring at the view. (the arrival information should be updated)

Summary: Dillon's island is indeed a special place...private yet convenient, cozy, comfortable and also thoughtfully laid out, with an amazingly well-provisioned kitchen. I kept thinking I would need something that wasn't there, but after a few minutes of looking, I always found it! We took full advantage of the wonders offered, including a half-day fishing with Ojibway guide Bully King. He was terrific and we caught 4 fish, which he cleaned and de-boned for us to enjoy later that night at dinner. We also hike up to Lake Topaz (lovely), kayaked around the bay, and had a pizza night, using the wood-buning oven on the island. The sleeping cabins were comfortable and roomy, and exploring the 4 acres was excellent fun for our dog. Thanks John, we hope to see you next summer!

Summary: What a wonderful place! Our family of four (kids age 11 and 8) had a glorious time exploring the island, finding the teepee, reading in the hammocks and many chairs set about in perfect spots, catching rock bass off the different docks, paddling the canoe over to check out the beaver lodge across the small bay, and exploring the larger Bay in the easy-to-run motorboat. We were there in early July so the water was cold—and the sauna helped warm us up before and after a leap off the diving board. The kitchen has everything you need to cook, particularly to bake--including cookbooks, baking pans, a KitchenAid mixer, food processor, blender—as well as a deep fryer, ice cream maker, milkshake machine! We had fun using the pizza oven for both pizza and baguette, and grilled on the large gas barbecue. We ate mostly on the deck, overlooking the water. Maybe because it has been a dry season, there were surprisingly few mosquitoes, even in the evening. The cottage and sleep cabins were clean, and beds were comfortable, with nice cotton linens. A good washing machine and dryer made life easier, and the shower is hot and water pressure good. This is classic Canadian cottaging, where you spend most of your time outdoors, but the buildings make it easy to cook, wash, sleep, and shelter from the wind, rain and sun when you need to. John was welcoming, helpful and available over the phone for troubleshooting and advice about day trips, but also let us feel the place was ours for the week. He clearly loves this place—and also loves to share it. We felt more like members of the family than paying guests. Thank you, John, for a wonderful family vacation!

Summary: Thank you very much for the perfect vacation. Our family enjoyed every minute on your island. Serenity and tranquility of the mornings, bright colours of forest, even rain and storm - everything was great. Special thank you for the boat. Fishing was one of the main goals, and pike fresh from the lake was so tasty. We had a very good experience with local people, too. In the middle of the big city no one will offer you help. But in the middle of the lake, people who passed on the boats stopped and asked if we were OK and offered help. It was great experience to go fishing with local man you recommended. Without him we would get lost in 5 minutes. Looked like he can drive the boat in the middle of the night and with closed eyes. He knows all the rocks in these lakes. And, maybe, the rocks know him too :) Your cottage with cozy fireplace, cabins, and real wooden sauna are perfect. Everything is done to be able to accommodate and make comfortable even the pickiest person. We really admired cottage decorations and your library. And your kitchen - there is everything one may need to make a good dinner. I hope we will be back. Thank you again.
