Grächen (St. Niklaas) is a quaint, fairy-tale village nestled on a plateau high above the train stop town of St. Niklaus in the valley below. Trains from all over Switzerland will get you to this scenic train stop. If you continue with the train up the valley, you end in Zermatt and the Matterhorn.
This charming chalet is nestled in the Matterhorn valley with breathtaking mountain views of the Weisshorn, the Berner Alps and from certain locations the Matterhorn as well. The chalet offers a south-facing terrace and garden area that is warm and sunny with beautiful mountain valley views. The charming little village is great for families or for a romantic get-away. Forested trails are located throughout the hilly landscape with many glacier fed water streams to follow. There is a fishing lake above the chalet where you can dine at a cafe shop right on the water and fish for trout. For high alpine trails, there are rugged rocky trails that will challenge you and provide a range of opportunities for all interests. Behind the train station in St. Niklaus, a small tram takes you up to the other side of the valley for additional hiking opportunities. The tram is not for the faint-of-heart as it is small and exciting as it goes straight up the mountain as shown in one of the on-line pictures.

Why the Owner Chose Grächen:
I used to visit this small mountain village as a child with my family every winter and summer. We spent so many happy times in the beautiful place. We would visit Zermatt, and hike all day. This place is very special to me and to my family, and that is why we bought the house.

Summary: My husband and I enjoyed our week in this well-equipped, clean, comfortable chalet very much. Its location is lovely; its views are stunning. The hiking trails that begin in the village of Grachen are awesome. It also proved a great base for day trips to Zermatt. This chalet far exceeded our expectations. Its owner made the entire process very easy; we hope to return.

Summary: Family of four plus grandmother. We enjoyed hiking here and cooking our meals or eating great local bakery bread and cheese on our hikes. Daily trips to the bakery just down the hill and supermarkets with convenient hours made it easy. There are both easy and challenging hikes from the chalet. With Grandma we walked along the Suonen or to Gasenried. Four of us had a great day hike to Saas Fee and took buses & train back. Highly recommend this lovely chalet to families.

Summary: Enjoyed our stay in Grachen. Chalet was well equipped, very clean, beds were comfortable, and grocery stores and bakeries were only a few minutes walk. Trails leading to beautiful forest walk were also about a 5 minute walk away. Views from chalet of town and mountains were gorgeous!! Grachen is not well situated for getting in and out of quickly, since its so far up the mountain, but the views make the drive worthwhile. It's best to try to arrive during daylight hours - we arrived very late at night and it was too dark to read the chalet names, making it very difficult to find. GPS was useless since Grachen doesn't use street numbers, just the chalet names. The owner had provided a map but our iPad did not recognize the program, so make sure you print the map out or convert it to a format you can read on electronic devices. But despite the drawbacks, we enjoyed our stay!

Summary: We stayed for the second year for one week in the apartment, for our winter holiday with our 7-year old twins. We enjoyed the Grächen ski area, which is great both for our kids and for us as parents. The ski area is rather compact but with some very beautiful slopes, especially the long Stafel-Seetalhorn and Plattje, and also the slope down to the village. The apartment is about 5-10 minutes walk from the gondola to the ski area. We left our ski's in the lockers at the gondola, otherwise the climb to the apartment will be tough on ski-shoes. After a day of skiing the way back is a nice climb. The apartment is nice and complete including fast internet and a new TV. The shower is indeed small but operating well, good for us. If we come back to Grächen we will look for the apartment again.

Summary: My husband and I stayed here at this wonderful chalet in Grachen. We loved the town, the people, the hiking and everything Grachen had to offer. The chalet was perfect although the bathroom shower is hard to use. It is awkward and small. But other than that we loved everything. Please also be aware that it is a bit of a hike up to the chalet so keep that in mind. We didn't mind. It had plenty of room for the two of us with an extra bedroom that we really didn't use. It had a nice kitchen and living room as well.

Summary: It was so nice to spread out and enjoy the roomy chalet. We loved being in this chalet that was along the highest level of dwellings in the village. We were able to look down on everything. Some reviews talked about the challenge of finding it. So let me put here what one does if you are using public transportation (as we were): you get to St. Niklaus by train. Soon a bus comes for Grachen (times are posted right there at the train station). The bus takes you to Grachen. Upon first arrival, when we asked local people for help, here was the vital information: have at your finger tips the name of the chalet in Swiss German. That is "Schnee Eule" (Snow Owl). Local people will probably not understand "Snow Owl". Additional back-up info plan: at the Tourist information center in the village, there are little free maps outside that you can use even when the info center is closed. It has ALL the chalets and hotels of the entire village, assigning each a number that you can find on the map. Often in Switzerland, grocery stores close at 16h on Saturdays. We were overjoyed to find one that stayed open to 19 p.m. We happened to arrive on a rainy weekend. On Sunday we walked down to the village and had a hearty lunch in one of the most beautiful, cozy restaurants we have ever been in. You can see it for yourself on the web: restaurant walliserkanne & sigis.bar, Grächen, Switzerland. We were cold (in August!). We went to Sigi's and had the traditional dish Rösti. We enjoyed the service, the beauty of the place and the food. Warmed us completely. We enjoyed the village of Grachen and the hiking trail behind our chalet. Also, the short bus ride back down to St. Niklaus made it easy to get to Zermatt and the Matterhorn and other great mountain destinations. I just want to emphasize that while we were considering staying here, we thought it might be hard to get to other places we wanted to visit using our Swiss passes. It was not difficult. It was easy, by riding the bus down to St. Niklaus, we could get to anywhere in the country (without a car). The views from our chalet were also lovely. We could see the whole sky.
