This is a 17th century farmhouse, now completely modernised. Though not isolated, it is very peacefully situated on a quiet country lane well away from the nearest main road.
What is unusual and pleasant about the house is that you drive in from the lane through high gates into a courtyard surrounded on three sides by the house and its barns. On the third side it opens out to the garden - about an acre in all, largely laid to grass and completely fenced in, making this an ideal and safe area for children to play. There is an open-fronted barn overlooking the courtyard which has been set up with table tennis and other games.
The house is very comfortable and well furnished, though with an eye to making it suitable for families with children. The house has 3 double/twin bedrooms, a bathroom and a shower room, large living/dining room with log fire, tv, dvd and hifi. Free Wifi
About the village - Vieil Hesdin, as its name implies, was the site of the old Hesdin before it was sacked by the Spanish in 1553. Hesdin was rebuilt at its present site, but today Vieil Hesdin remains a pretty, peaceful village situated on the banks of the river Canche, just a short drive from Hesdin. Plenty of quiet roads and tracks for cycling or walking along the river or in the nearby woods.
About the area - Le Pays des 7 Vallees is a tourist area within this region having the old market town of Hesdin at its heart. Situated at the confluence of the rivers Canche and Ternoise Hesdin has an impressive central 'Grande Place' dominated by the 16th century town hall. Market day is Thursday, but the boutiques, restaurants and bars, its historic church and buildings, and its status as a 3 star 'ville fleuri' (flowered town) make it a town pleasant to visit on any day. North of Hesdin is the 'Foret d'Hesdin' extending to over 1000 hectares.
15 km of forest roads and 5 km of one of the national Grande Randonnée footpaths make it ideal for walking, cycling and picnics.

Summary: This is the second time we have stayed at Maison St. Collette. I had a week on my own, pure joy, and was then joined by my son and his P.A. The property is spacious and ideal for my son, who is a full time wheelchair user, it allows him total independence both inside and outside the property. The new shower, with seat, is ideal as he has no real balance, and having a bath also is great for him to relax when he has muscle spasms. For me, the peace of this property is an ideal setting from the continual hubbub of London and hospitals. It has everything you need and more. Hesdin has some good restaurants, supermarkets, local bakeriers (the one opposite La Choppe is superb) and butchers. L'Allouette on the main road serves good food open Wed and Sun Lunch, and Friday and Saturday evening only. La Belle Epoque and La Garenne are also well worth a visit. The owner's are extremely helpful and I would highly recommend this property. We will no doubt stay here again, just trying to work out my son's timetable. Thank you so much Janet and Iain.

Summary: Our second visit to Maison Colette has confirmed the very positive impressions we had of our first one. The house remained clean and comfortable with every desired convenience and even in mid-winter the surroundings were a pleasure to spend time in.

Summary: We can do little more than echo the many positive comments made by other people who have stayed here. In respect of its position and surroundings, its facilities and spaciousness both inside and outside, its comfort and cleanliness, it would be a hard act to follow. In our experience of holiday homes in France, stretching back over many years, it would rank easily in the top three and, after any careful consideration, would most probably elbow its two nearest rivals out of the picture.

Summary: We have enjoyed a really wonderful week in this beautiful house and were most pleasantly surprised to see the spacious accommodation and garden area. The house is very well equipped with dishwasher, television, internet access and numerous games and pastimes, including a superb ping-pong table which we all used a lot! Vieil Hesdin itself is very peaceful but is in easy reach of Hesdin, Montreuil, Abbeville, Arras, Azincourt and, of course, the beaches. The Carrefour at Hesdin is just a few miles away and the Thursday market seems to cover much of the town and is quite an experience. We would really recommend Maison Sainte Colette for a memorable taste of France in lovely surroundings. We will be returning!!

Summary: Our visit to this property could not have been better. From the moment we made the booking through Janet the owner, everything went like clockwork and was exactly as described in the details. On arrival we were faced with large gates that revealed an oasis in the French countryside and plenty of space for parking cars. The farmhouse was spotless and met our requirements perfectly with a double en suite and 2 twins along with plenty of living space if the weather prevented us from being outside. One of the twins is up stairs and has a fantastic view of the local convent. The stairs are quite uneven so care was needed when using them. Having wifi in the property was a bonus. In the kitchen there is every possible utensil/pot etc that you could ever want and having a dishwasher meant that the washing up was taken care of - once we worked out that the big plates have to be put in backwards! A washing machine in the main bathroom also came in handy. The gardens are massive with barbeque areas at both the front and back of the house with enough seating for 6/8 and a'ping-pong' table that saw many a heated competition! With fruit trees providing plenty of plums and a herb garden to use we were in our element. However, there is no boulangerie/patisserie in the village so a trek to the nearest town was required every morning by car to get fresh bread - it is not walking distance! Bikes are also provided but these would propbably not have been suitable for bread collection - they are for exploring the area though. The property is excellent as a base for visiting the area and is only 30 minutes from the many beaches and golf courses around. There are many restaurants in the resorts which we tended to use before returning to the farmhouse. There is a bar/restaurant within walking distance in the village however we did not use it. Overall, we had a fantastic holiday and would thoroughly recommend this property. It is less than an hour from Boulogne ferry port and provided a very good base for exploring northern France.

Summary: Everything we could have wished for; large dog safe garden with lockable gates. Very quiet area, only noise from cows. Good walking and only 8 mins by car to supermarket bakery etc. Good quality restaurants a short drive away. Wifi worked well, TV etc all fine, good kitchen being upgraded this winter and plenty of space. We have booked provisionally for next year.
