Positive: It's a cosy small house at the back of a farm. It has a kitchen fully equipped. You can park your car in front of the house. There is a terrace which you can use. The hosts are very friendly and helpful. We were welcomed by 2 bottles of wine and local beer. The place is just 25 min drive to Lake Constance (25 min to Rorschach, 1 hour to Germany and less than 1 hour to Austria). There are wonderful places around (Mount Säntis and a nice old town Appenzell). The price is quite reasonable.
Negative: We were disappointed to see that there was no good view of the mountains from the house, the only thing you can see is the driveway and tall trees . Behind the guest house there are cages with goats and rabbits, there is no smell but sometimes at night you can hear their noise, not quite disturbing. We spent 3 summer days there when the weather was too hot (+33C, +91F), and the bedroom upstairs was unbearably hot in the daytime (no AC). But in the evening and at night the temperatures were very comfortable.

Positive: The host, Anke, was helpful in answering my questions prior to my stay. I appreciate her support in helping me find the best route via public transportation. Immediately after I arrived, she was friendly in introducing herself, her children, and animals. I enjoyed two conversations with her husband, Nathanael, who was friendly and kind. Her two eldest children were also friendly and kind to me. The little house I rented is lovely. The stairs to the bedroom are steep. The view from the living room and kitchen looks upon trees, their house, and a wee bit of mountains. Hiking in the surrounding area is okay, much of it is walking on the roads. Many thoughtful touches in the accommodation. Having a washing machine was great. It was nice to have candles and a firepit with firewood. The kitchen was well-stocked for cooking and had excellent knives. The underfloor heating was good. The shower was great with lots of hot water. Excellent WIFI, strong and consistent. I don’t have kids, but the place seemed well-appointed for families with small children. As a single woman, I felt safe in the accommodation and in the surrounding area.
Negative: Window screens would be helpful. It was sometimes hot inside, but I couldn’t open the windows because of the flies. Oven mitts and a bigger cutting board would be helpful. Their two large dogs barked at me relentlessly every time I walked down the driveway and sometimes when I was sitting on the porch of my accommodation. The evening that I checked in, I messaged Anke, saying that I had questions. We agreed to wait until the following day to speak in person. The next day, she was working with her children and animals behind my accommodation. I walked there to say hello, curious to see what they were doing with the goats. I brought my list of questions, in case she had time, but I was ready to wait until later if that worked better for her. She saw the paper in my hand and said that she didn’t have time to answer my questions. I had another seven nights at her place and was reluctant to ask for help again. She didn’t reach out to me to offer to answer questions, perhaps because I speak only English, and she was not enthusiastic about dusting off her English-language skills. I would’ve been happy to use Google translate, if that would’ve worked better for her. As a solo female English speaker who traveled by train and bus, without a car, I’m guessing that some of this review won’t apply to the vast majority of travelers to Herisau Saum, that most other travelers will find the accommodation and the hosts delightful.
