Le Mas (Country House) is in the heart of the town of Caixas. The church and the town hall form the center, with the only house in the village - the Mas. All that surrounds it is the natural countryside of the region with a view to the east of the sea and to the west of Mont Hélène which shelters the old chapel of Caixas on the hillside and which hides the Mas du 3000 meter rock called "le Canigou". Le Canigou gives its name to numerous restaurants, bars, cafes and stands proudly all over Roussillon; in winter with a large white cap that allows you to ski and in summer the opportunity to get up with the sun, travel and conquer its peak.
Le Mas was formerly listed in the charm guide as "Charming guest house in France", also in "Special places to stay in France" by Alastair Sawday and I think in a dozen other guides before d be reformatted as a family vacation home.
Parts of the old house date back several hundred years if one imagines that a group of stones would once have formed someone's house. The old bread oven is still partly there and would have once provided bread for the village. As is the case now, there is no village because all the old buildings have long since collapsed in the old memories of the people who lived here.

All that remains is a small church, a little unused, a bell tower, even more unused, the Town Hall, with in front of the village square, which in summer can boast of certain festivities in the heat of the evening; and the Mas.
History, as it exists, tells that once it was a small building belonging to two brothers who each had a room upstairs and with a common kitchen downstairs and the animals in a small `` lean-to '' on the side, providing rabbits and pigeons and village bread. Then it became the village bar run, some say, by a "generous woman"; I never said what she was generous with.
The remodeled and refurbished Mas now has 225 m² of living space with its 6 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms, a large living room upstairs which overlooks Mont Hélène, towards Spain around 40 minutes away and the Albères slopes which slide gently towards Collioure. Most of the rooms have a clear view of the sea or the hill and are bright and open.
Entering through the old door of the Mas leads to the open kitchen and the small dining room. The indoor dining room has a large table that can seat ten people. There is a small terrace at the front and a large gravelled area for eating outside with the barbecue.
The nearest village shops are 10 minutes away (bakery, butcher and general store plus a small "Spar"). Otherwise, several large supermarkets are in Thuir - 20 minutes - think about shopping before arrival or allow time although shopping at the supermarket can be done on Sunday mornings.

Summary: This 250 year old property is beautifully maintained and the conversion to modern amenities was tasteful and functional without compromising the visual integrity of the historical structure . The 13 meter long pool is well maintained and clean . It was reminded us of Napa Valley before it was discovered and developed . It was great value as well.

Summary: We had an amazing holiday at mas saint jacques. The villa is lovely and clean and very well equipped. The pool is lovely and big and we had so much fun in it! Ian and Juliette are amazing hosts who made us very welcome and were on hand for any help we needed. It’s an amazing area too with lovely beaches nearby and lovely villages and towns to visit. Summary: Loved staying in this tranquil Catalan house. The villa was extremely well provided and well equipped for anything we may decide to prepare in the kitchen. It would suit larger groups and families.The bedrooms were charming and comfortable and the whole place was lovely and clean. We really enjoyed the private pool which was very well maintained by the owner, Ian. The house is approached through winding roads well away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Summary: We have stayed at scores of holiday rentals around the world but I have to say that our short week at Mas St Jaques was probably one of the most ideal for us. Situated in a tiny hamlet in the foothills of the Pyrennees, although relatively remote it was a perfect base to explore the fascinating history; culture and scenery the area has to offer. A week allowed us to barely scrape the surface. The immediate area around Caixas is quite beautiful in itself and as keen walkers we were able to head out and walk in any direction from the house for endless hours of stunning views and to get a real flavour of old Catalonia. The house is bursting with character and is absolutely huge. We found that it had just about everything to suit our needs. With six bedrooms and five bathrooms, most of them en suite, the house would be perfect for family or group holidays although the owner, Ian rented to myself and my wife and even allowed our two dogs. The spacious, clean and well equipped kitchen sits on the ground floor next to the old beamed original living area of the Mas. There is a large inside dining/summer room or an ouside dining area complete with BBQ's with ample room to seat more than a dozen people. Some quite steep stairs lead to bedrooms and suites on the first and second floors, each with it's own unique character and also on the second floor is the very large and airy sitting room. The bedroom we stayed in was on the second floor and has access to it's own terrace which in turn has stepped access to the pool area. The pool is one of the very few in the properties that we have stayed at that is comfortably usable. Ian has recently fitted heating and it is large enough to actually swim in. Ian currently lives in seperate accommodation just outside the Mas and is available if you need help but discretely absent if you don't. He has renovated and developed the mas whilst living here for more than 20 years and is a fountain of knowledge on the local and wider area and the French way of life. You might need to stock up in any one of the abundant supermarkets in nearby Thuir if you intend to self cater as there are only small grocery, bakers and butchers in the closest village ten minutes drive away but we didn''t find this a problem. I would have no hesitation in recommending this property to any like minded traveller and hope to spend more time here in the future.

Summary: We have just returned from this lovely property set in the quiet Hamlet of Caixas; the house is very well equipped with a large swimming pool and plenty of sunbeds. It is the ideal property for a large group of friends or extended family; it's only downfall is that it is a little remote approximately 20mins fro the nearest Boulangerie in Fourcas and a further 10 to the nearest Supermarket in Thuir! However, we felt the positives far outweighed the negatives and would happily return again!
