Summary: I went with a small group - only 4 of us, which meant we could really sprawl out in this glorious old home. Though is has been refurbished, it still has the old charm - with the stone fireplace, old wooden floors and beamed ceilings. The kitchen, while modern, still has an old look to it. What I love is that it is in the country, BUT, right on a road that takes you to many wonderful locations. We were within an hour drive either direction of MANY fabulous castles, villages, and roadside restaurants. The town of Castilonnes is only a few minutes by car, or about 20 minutes on foot. If your travel decision depends on a great internet connection, or television, this is not the place for you (there is internet, but it's spotty). But if you really want an enjoyable adventure, you couldnt do better. Would I go there again? In a heartbeat. Might try to take my husband next time. We found the best method of travel to get us there was to fly into Paris, and then transfer to a local flight to Bordeaux. There, we rented a car and drove the rest of the distance. Our rental car had GPS which was helpful and it took under 2 hours from Bordeaux. Many English speaking people in the area, at least enough English to help. They were ALL very kind and friendly to us. The woman who cares for the property, Hilary and her husband Mike, made our stay very enjoyable. Mike is American - from the south - and Hilary is British, so at least her English was far better, and more authentic than ours. (Sorry Mike, but we truly enjoyed your southern accent!) Great time, even better adventure. Thanks for making this home available for rent.

Summary: We had a wonderful stay at Le Grindoux in June! Hillary is a kind and considerate host -- she met us on arrival, showed us around the house, and was available by phone or text to answer any questions. The house has been beautifully restored and updated -- the new (fresh interior walls, new windows, contemporary soaking tub) complementing the old (limestone exterior, wooden roof beams, stone fireplace). We found it very attractive and comfortable. The upstairs bedrooms are especially inviting, with skylights to let in the morning light. The house is located a little way outside Castillonès, surrounded by wheat fields and pastures. During our week there, we shopped the local villages (each has its market day) and made fabulous dinners in the country-style kitchen, eating al fresco at the big table on the patio with sweeping views of rolling hills and farms. There are hammocks to relax in. We rented bikes and cycled the small roads that connect the villages. At the end of our stay, no one wanted to leave. Le Grindoux offers all comforts and conveniences, in a gorgeous setting, for a delightful stay in the French countryside. The house has plenty of books with information about the area. One week was not enough, so we will have to go back!

Summary: Four retired senior citizens thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Le Grindoux at the end of April 2013. The description of the property was accurate and was as comfortable as it appears in the photos. The owners' local representative, Hilary Lloyd, was most helpful and provided food and wine for our late afternoon arrival. The house and bedrooms were very comfortable and the outdoor area was great for sitting and enjoying a glass of local wine and reflecting on our adventures after a day's explorations. It was a very relaxing location and perfect as a "home base" for exploring the countryside and nearby attractions: local wineries, market days in nearby Bastide towns, visiting Bergerac, Sarlat, and Lascaux II with its prehistoric cave paintings. Even drove as far as the amazing caverns of the Gouffre de Padriac and the UNESCO World Heritage site of Roc Amador. The nearby grocery stores and bakeries provided all the necessities; we also ate a delicious meal at La Marechalerie, a restaurant in town and at the Monte Cristo, on the road to Villeral. Would highly recommend a stay here.

Summary: Our stay at le Grindoux was just totally awesome. The house is great, just like the pictures. There was six of us and we were all quite comfortable. Our bed was super comfortable, the house was very clean and the showers were really nice . We loved eating at the outside table everyday. The views are beautiful! As soon as you arrive you start to relax. Castillones is lovely and sweet. The owners left great suggestions for activities, attractions and restaurants. We did so many things because le Grindoux is so conveniently located. We even went to Spain for the running of the bulls in Pamplona. We hit the beach in Hendaye, went stand up paddling on the Dordogne and kayaking in Villeneuve Sur Lot. We rented a boat and all got to captain on the canal. We went to a different market everyday, several castles and caves, celebrated Bastille Day in Castillones with the locals, and on and on so much awesome fun. We were also very happy just chilling at le Grindoux. We made amazing dinners with the fresh produce, cheese and bread from the town markets and drank delicious local wines. Everything was perfect and amazing. Loved it!! Can't wait to return.

Summary: Our family of 10, 6 adults and 4 children, stayed at Le Grindoux in June, 2011. We couldn't recommend it more. Ideally located in the heart of the Dordogne, there is a range of nearby sites and activities for all ages: chateaux, farms, lakes, wineries and wonderful village markets where one can find an array of gourmet foods to take home for the evening meal. You can rely on the accurate description of the property; it is as ever pleasant and comfortible as it appears in the pictures, and the owners and the their local representative couldn't be more helpful in providing suggestions, information, and even a stocked kitchen upon request.

Summary: Charming house, comfortable, clean and well-appointed - good beds and good bathrooms! - lovely patio w/beautiful view & easily workable bbq - very close to the town of Castillones which has 3 excellent restaurants at which we ate, Le Marechalerie, Les Remparts Hotel restaurant and Le Gourmet - also good grocery store and wonderful market day on Tuesdays in Casti - easy drive to many other bastide towns in area and several chateaux - only minor problem was that washer/dryer needs better instructions to go with it - otherwise a marvelous rental and would & have recommended it to friends

Summary: We loved our time at Le Grindoux. We are a family of 4 with 2 very active boys aged 11 and 8 and arrived at Le Grindoux after a 27 hour flight from Australia to the UK, a night in each of London and Bordeaux and a drive from Bordeaux getting used to driving on the RHS of the road! Needless to say we were over the moon when we arrived and saw that the house was just as the photos depicted (without the use of wide angle lenses etc..) and just as described. The house was immaculate and the welcome pack of wines, fresh bread, foie gras, jam, cheeses, fresh fruit, ham was perfect. The information pack provided us with many great leads on where to go and what to do. We tried out the local restaurants, Casti Pizza (great thin based wood fired pizzas), made friends with the locals at the Bar where we had our morning coffee and evening aperitif, went to the local markets and cooked BBQs at the house, ate copius amounts of bread, cheeses, fresh salads dressed with walnut oil, fresh fruits (the cherries in particular) all washed down with local wines. The boys loved the space in the yard and kicked footballs around. We rode the bikes along the quiet roads nearby, walked in the early mornings, swam at the local pool, raided the boookshelves for the many books on France and soaked up the sun in the courtyard which seems perfectly positioned to capture morning and afternoon (and evening at that time of year) sun. This is a truly beautiful part of France. The owners were very helpful answering all of our questions before the trip making sure we were looked after during our stay. We have no hesitation in recommending the house to family and friends and are already planning ways in which we may return to Castillones and stay again at Le Grindoux.

Summary: My husband and I, along with 3 friends, had the most enjoyable stay at Le Grindoux mid-April. This charming, rustic and very clean farmhouse is in a superb location for exploring the French countryside. Each day brought a new adventure as we explored the area visiting wineries, the “beaux villages”, chateaus, prehistoric cave paintings, and the daily farmers markets of the neighboring villages. The rates were so affordable too! Whether you want to explore by car or cycling (all the roads are paved) I highly recommend Le Grindoux for a vacation that is both full of delights and relaxing at the same time. We can’t wait to go back.
