Set in a Renaissance mansion from the 16th century, Chateau Appony is quietly located in Oponice, 12 mi away from Nitra. It offers free access to the wellness area with a pool, hot tub and 3 different saunas. Guests can browse the historical library with 17,000 original books dating from the Baroque era. The restaurant serves traditional Slovakian as well as Mediterranean cuisine. Barbecue facilities and gazebos can be found in the garden. All rooms at the Appony come with flat-screen satellite TV, and a mini-bar. Rooms with air conditioning are available only on the second floor, on request at reception. Positive: The location is special in a large park and tge building is very well maintained. Good restaurant en friendly staff all around.
Negative: Our room had currains that did not block any sunlight so we woke up with tge aun at 5.30.....

Positive: magnificent trees in the surrounding park - friendly & efficient front-desk - nice pool & sauna - superb courgette soup
Negative: inaccessible by public transport - no lift, endless corridors - ancient château restored in humdrum fashion with no reference to its age-old history (family home of last Queen of Albania), except for pastiche library with outrageous entrance fee... no attention paid to ancient family castle up on the hill (how to visit?)... restaurant lacks air-conditioning (served bottle of wine at 30° !!) - no Tasting Menu in restaurant as advertised when we booked... in short, the place is pretentious and needs proper management

Positive: Amazing location, surrounded by a beautiful park, helpful staff. Breakfast and dinner excellent, the chateau itself is very tastefully and expensively furnished. Bowling. Spa and a small gym.
Negative: Could work a bit on the details to match the overall genius loci of this place - change the withered flowers, visually check and wipe the tables spotless etc. Bathroom backsplash behind washbasin needs to be cleaned too 😉
