We are located across from the Mississippi River with great views of the river, eagles overhead and the Alma bluff. Main Street is also Wisconsin State Highway 35 and known as The Great River Road, Wisconsin's only National Scenic Byway. Drive the back roads of Buffalo County and revel that there is no traffic and Buffalo County only has one stop light ... just to let the folks from Winona, Minnesota come into the state.
For train buffs Alma, Wisconsin is one of the best viewing locations along the Mississippi River for the Burlington Northern Sante Fe line. Lock & Dam #4 bridge over the railroad tracks is a favorite viewing spot in Alma. The views from the LOWER COTTAGE are spectacular with a clear view of trains heading north or south backed by the Mississippi River. We have train photographers stay each year to capture the views. CAUTION: You will hear trains but we provide ear plugs.

Summary: My husband and I loved this cozy little cottage. We were pleasantly surprised by the space - a full living room and bedroom. We noticed a few things with cleanliness (like other reviews have mentioned). I ended up spraying and wiping down the bathroom with the disinfectant spray because there were signs it may not have been deep cleaned prior to our stay. The bed was comfy but I would definitely recommend an update to the pillows! Also, as other reviewers have said, the dog upstairs does bark occasionally. We didn’t connect with the host at all, which was surprising considering how friendly the rest of the people in the town were, so it would have been fun to meet! I also tried to reach out (via phone number left at the front desk) before leaving and never heard back. We were also disappointed that they weren’t doing breakfast anymore. Overall, it was a great spot to stay. We loved being able to walk out our door and get anywhere within walking distance, and just under 10 minute drive to Buena Vista. I think if the Cottage did a few upgrades and connected more with guests then we would definitely stay again!

Summary: The Lower Cottage at Blue Door Inn is a very charming suite right on the edge of downtown Alma! It is located next to a garden store, so there are beautiful flowers right outside the windows, as well as a view of the river. The Nelson Creamery and Danzinger Vineyards are each a short drive away, and we were able to buy some cheese and a bottle of wine and sit out and enjoy our delicious purchases on the property’s beautiful patio/garden. The owner was friendly, and check in was easy. The continental breakfast (delivered just outside of our room) was wonderful and included protein items, such as yogurt and/or meat/cheese, berries, muffins, juice. The bed was very comfortable, and there is plenty of space to spread out in this very clean unit. A few nice touches were the wine glasses and corkscrew that were provided in the room, as well as a Keurig, coffee pods, and stoneware mugs. You will hear some trains and a bit of traffic here, but it’s part of the charm of the town, and honestly, the traffic seemed to be quiet overnight with the trains only going through maybe 2-3 times as we slept. You can walk to many of the shops and establishments in town, but if you come here during the week, you may want to be aware that a number of the shops in town are only open on the weekends (at least at the time of this writing). You may also want to bring some cash, as some of the local establishments do not accept credit/debit cards. This was a fantastic place to stay in a sweet town!
