Casa Portela is a stone farmhouse situated on an old Royal Way overlooking the Miño valley and Portuguese mountains. From the walled garden, a bridge leads to the terraced finca and pool. Tucked away above a pretty river valley the house lies in an idyllic spot, the perfect place to get away from it all and relax in the sun. The land is managed organically and covered in fruit, nut and other native trees. Seasonal fruit is available year round including cherries, peaches, grapes, oranges and raspberries. Plenty of garden furniture is provided along with croquet/badminton sets and boules. The saltwater pool (9m x 4.5m) is for sole use of guests.
The house has a large well equipped kitchen and dining room. It has been restored rustically, exposing the granite stone and old beams and has a traditional Galician fireplace. The kitchen leads outside to the walled garden where there is a dining area and BBQ. The living room has fantastic views down the valley. It´s a cosy place with comfy chairs and sofa, lots of books, games and satellite T.V. All three spacious bedrooms have en-suite bathroom and shower.
Staying at Casa A Portela gives you the opportunity to explore a part of Spain and Portugal almost untouched by tourism... Discover historic spa towns, try rafting on the river Miño, explore the rugged scenery of Peneda-Geres Nationl park or check out the beautiful beaches on the Rias Baixas coast. Closer to home, a signed walk from the house leads you through breathtaking countryside, crossing back and forth over the river through ancient cork oak woodland, past stone water mills, pretty hamlets and up into hills where wild horses roam. Or maybe a glass of local Albariño wine by the pool sounds more appealing... You could even go for a 10 min stroll to a local vineyard where they will show you around and you can sample their wine, they also offer Spanish classes in the winery.

Summary: We had an excellent holiday, the accommodation was exactly like the photos, the pool and view even better than the photos!! Paul helped us with finding places to visit and recommend places to eat. Overall an excellent place to stay, we will be back!

Summary: This is a lovely rustic converted farmhouse in the Spanish hills between A Caniza and Arbo near the Portuguese border. It has a lovely swimming pool with stunning views down the valley. Paul is a friendly and accommodating host. Thoroughly recommended holiday house. Note: Access is steep.

Summary: Our stay at Paul's place was absolutely amazing, from start to finish. We loved the house, the views, the peace and quiet. Paul was a great host, and able to give us lots of advice about the local area. We loved the local walking, and can't wait to go back next year.

Summary: When you love quietness, this is the place to be. We loved the classic brick house with an english twist. Warm welcome by Paul. Every question was easily answered. As we love visiting cities and nature, we visited Porto, SAntiago, Cies Islands, Ourense, Melgacao. We visited soalheiro winery, did rafting (recommended by Paul) , walked along the minho river ( lovely walk). On the way to from Belgium we passed by Leon, Bernados Reales and Los Medulas. Worthwile. On the way back, we did Picos de Europa and Bilbao! . We had a perfect time at the pool with the gorgeous view.

Summary: Family of 5, 3 adult sons 18-23 yrs. Firstly the location…on a beautiful hillside and private. 10 minute drive to A Caniza, depending on how you drive 20-30 mins to Portugal. Lots to do in the area: golf and white water rafting we enjoyed. Trips to the beach…playa americas near Vigo our favourite and went there twice. The Villa was perfect for our needs. The pool was beautiful and a great size. I always look for a slightly larger pool for my three boys and their water volleyball games. Plenty of shade in this area if you needed it. Shower, Sun beds, parasol and table and chairs were well maintained. We enjoyed the Chess, Boules and the badminton as well. Wifi strong enough for our needs. Sky Tv (free view channels). The lounge was comfortable with a great view. The 3 bedrooms (all ensuite) were comfortable and clean. The kitchen was spotless and maintained well. We had a BBQ almost every other day and enjoyed that too. All in all we had a wonderful time. Thank you Paul for everything. Communication was great from the start of our journey. Helped us many times with your knowledge of the area with great recommendations and bookings for us. Nothing was too much trouble and we greatly appreciated your help. You live in a beautiful part of the world and we could all feel your passion for it and left feeling rather envious.

Summary: The property is in a quiet rural location with stunning views across the country. The house is comfortable and the facilities are good. The garden and pool catch the sun, and like the house have lovely views. Paul who manages the house is friendly and welcoming and full of useful information about the area and can source good local wine from a vineyard he knows. A great house for a relaxing break.

Summary: We loved staying in this property - so well equipped, quiet and full of character. The location was great - with stunning views and handy for Spain or Portugal (the National Park there is amazing). It was so peaceful, but a car is essential. Paul and Lisa were great hosts and very helpful, with good ideas for things to do.

Summary: Comfortable family home in beautiful rural surroundings. The pool with a view was the cherry on the top - lovely place to hang out and chill. The proximity to Portugal was an added bonus (15 min by car). Lovely owners - very helpful and knowledgeable of the area. Enough activities for young and old - not touristy at all which really appealed to us. The only little challenge we had was the driveway to and from the house - its a little steep. We mastered it with a larger and smaller car so its definately possible - a matter of practice makes perfect! All in all a homely, well-equiped house perfect for a family with a stunning pool and views.

Summary: We had a wonderful time at this beautiful house and Paul was an excellent host. We really enjoyed the pool with views of the hills of Portugal. An idyllic country setting with nearby villages to explore, it was also a great base to travel to the Sil River valley, Ourense, and the coast!
