Positive: The Good - There are plenty of good things to say about this establishment. For starters, the location is positioned very well in the town of Paintsville. There are two convenience stores within 30 seconds of the hotel and there is a phenomenal Chinese restaurant (Peking Dragon; formerly known as the Mandarin House) right across the street that offers one of the best buffets in the region (leaps and bounds above the rest). You are less then five minutes away from a Food City, a Walmart, and a plethora of restaurants that can suit pretty much any desired tastes. You are also less than 10 minutes away from the Paintsville Lake park, marina and walking trail. While certainly not a large area, Paintsville does offer plenty of stores, restaurants and attractions to keep one occupied whilst visiting. The room for my stay was ground-level and was mostly clean. The air conditioning in the room worked phenomenally well, as did the mini-fridge, the television, and the Wi-Fi. Then there is the on-site pool, which was also very nice, although the railed ladders to enter/exit the pool leave a little to desire for folks with certain physical disabilities or limitations. Still, it is a very nice pool. Lastly, despite being positioned in a busy area of town, the setting is quiet, especially at night, and police routinely patrol the area to ensure crime is limited. I will absolutely stay here again when back in the area.
Negative: The Bad - The room we stayed in was ground level (not a problem at all) but honestly, it was not representative of the pictures provided to this website and others. I was told that the upper-level rooms have been renovated, but the ground-level rooms, despite being mostly clean, have some noticeable flaws (poorly-patched holes in walls, cigarette burns on the sheets, comforter, pillow cases and on the carpet, etcetera). The seat was stained and looked filthy so it was not used and there were various stains and grime on some of the walls. The worst part of our stay, however, occurred on the day of our checkout. One of the cleaning ladies banged on the door loudly and rudely shouted inside that it was "Housekeeping, and we had a noon checkout and it was almost 1:00pm," basically telling us to get up, to gather our belongings and get out. I felt this was highly unnecessary as our room had a telephone that the receptionist could have easily called us at anytime between 11:00am and noon to deliver our wakeup call and inform us that it was time for us to go. No one likes being startled awake by an angry-sounding lady banging on a door and being shouted at from outside the door. Other than that unpleasant interaction, the rest of our encounters with staff were friendly and positive.
Summary: The area, the price, and the overall experience and quality make this place worth the stay.
