Our little “Hakuna Matata” is a beautiful, cozy, private 2 room mother-in-law unit.
Meaning of Hakuna Matata in Swahili is “NO WORRIES” - which is exactly what you will have “for the length of your stay”
The space
Hakuna Matata is attached to the main house (above the garage) , but is entirely private and locked off from the main house (where we live), it has it’s own separate entrance around the back of the house. There are stairs inside the unit going up to the 2nd level where you have your own bedroom, with a King bed and flat screen TV, separate living room, with a queen size pull out futon and a flat screen TV , a spa like bathroom (with oversized soaking tub as well as a rain shower), and kitchenette that includes a microwave with grilling features, an induction hot plate, a fridge/freezer, toaster and a sink, a fully stocked coffee/tea bar, and an awesome private deck, that runs the length of the bedroom and living rooms, where you can just hang out. There is a gas bbq grill on the deck for your personal use, as well as an outdoor heater for the cooler evenings when you want to hang out on the deck and enjoy a sundowner.
Our unit is ideally suited for a couple or a couple with 2 small children. *** PLEASE NOTE, IT IS NOT SUITABLE FOR 4 ADULTS ***
During the Spring, Summer, and Fall, our backyard is for your use too (winter it is often under snow). Where you can enjoy sitting under the gazebo, reading a good book in the hammock or watching the bird and animal life, or hang around the gas fire pit, roasting marshmallows and making memories. There is a gas bbq grill out there too, in case you prefer to bbq out in the peaceful, forest surroundings . There is a beautiful landscaped back yard for you to have a game of cornhole or other yard games (they’re kept in the shed).
We have 2 bicycles for your use, with lots of bike trails close to Hakuna Matata, as well as hiking and walking trails too, with small creeks close by, all accessible without having to get in your car. Hakuna Matata is in the “Montgomery Estates” subdivision of South Lake Tahoe.
Heavenly ski resort is about 8 minutes drive away, Sierra-at-Tahoe about 20 minutes drive , the Lake / beaches are only 5 - 10 minutes drive away, and we are really close to great restaurants, bars and grocery stores.
Guest access :-
The entire unit is private and for your use only. There is a keyless entry code to enter and the code will be sent to you the morning of your check in.
Other things to note :-
The only thing not for guests, since we live in the main part of the house, is access to our deck off our living room, and our hot tub area, which will be closed off.
Please DO NOT park in front of the mailbox or our neighbors property. There is a designated parking spot for guests to park in.
Do not park on the street in winter as snow removal equipment could damage your car or have your car towed.
This is a non-smoking unit. There will be $200 charge if any evidence of Vaping / smoke / cigarette butts are found in the unit.
Due to the crazy nature of our world right now, we strongly suggest that whenever you take a trip you purchase a travel insurance to guard against unforeseen circumstances beyond ones control (fire, weather, illnesses, etc…). VRBO do offer travel insurance

Summary: The property is perfect for a couple. The location was great for all of the activities we had planned, i.e., hiking, visiting historic sites, cruising the lake, and it is close to lots of good places to eat. We particularly enjoyed having our wine and cheese in the gazebo in the lovely backyard. We definitely will stay here again when we return to Lake Tahoe.

Summary: We did a long-weekend ski trip with our young family. We enjoyed the stay and would happily go back. The place was nice and cozy with good character and personality. The kitchen is well-equip for how minimal it is, but there isn't really a space for 4 people to sit down and eat together. We ended up eating out more than expected.

Summary: This property was a wonderful place to stay! John and Allison were very responsive hosts and were very hospitable and welcoming. This place was close to lots of restaurants and Heavenly resort, and it was the perfect about of space for two adults. One thing to keep in mind is that even though it appears in searches for “sleeps 4” it only sleeps two adults, and two children, not four adults. We loved the space and would come back in a heartbeat.

Summary: This was a perfect property for our family (2 adults, 3-year-old, 1-year-old). The neighborhood is quiet but just a short drive from everything we wanted. We used the backyard for some lawn games and s'mores and it was great to have a place to play with the kids right there. The hosts are super friendly and while we didn't have any issues, I could tell that they would be very responsive if we had needed anything. One small thing that was nice was that they had put labels all over the apartment to help you use it - things like which light switches did what and where to find instructions for the hot plate. It was fully stocked with everything we could possibly want - coffee, snacks, soaps and other bath items (the bathtub was great! it was big enough for me to get in with both kids, which they got a kick out of), bathrobes, etc. It is clear that the hosts really thought through what someone staying there would need to have and need to know. We were here in the summer, which was lovely. With the windows open it stayed quite cool. I also think it would be cozy in the winter - we didn't use the fireplaces but they looked really nice. I would definitely stay here again!

Summary: My daughters, 8 & 10, and I stayed at Hakuna Matata two nights for a girls' trip. The accomodations were even more amazing than we imagined. The jetted tub was deep and relaxing and the bathroom was luxurious. Lots of extra goodies and toiletries. Fully stocked coffee bar. Everything you need and then some! Thanks for the wonderful stay! We'll be back!

Summary: I felt completely at home and very comfortable staying at their Hakuna Matata getaway. 🦁 🐘 🐒 🦓 These wonderful hosts pay so much attention to detail, there wasn’t a stone left unturned. The privacy alone is worth the stay, but the luxurious, well thought amenities made it complete. The area itself is beautiful and their neck of the woods is very serene. Summary: A great escape to the mountains. We loved our stay at Hakuna Matata. The accomodations were great and the comfort was worth every penny. After unloading the car, it really felt like there were no worries for the rest of our stay.
